THE APPROACHING SCHOOL ELECTIONS .

The voting papers for the Spring Election of candidates into tlie Royal Masonic Institutions for Girls and Boys respectively were issued the middle of last week , and wc accordingly lose no time in drawing attention to the distribution of the children and such other matters connected with their candidature as seem

desirable . In consequence of Easter falling as it does this year , tlie elections will t > c held somewhat later than usual , that for

THE ROYAL MASONIC INSTITUTION FOR GIRLS taking place at thc Quarterly General Court of Governors and Subscribers , which is lixed for Saturday , the 16 th April , at the hour of 12 noon . For this there are 26 candidates , of whom 10

remain from last October , and 16 have had their cases approved and their names placed on the list during thc past six months . London sends up six , and has a part interest in three others , and the Provinces and Districts Abroad are responsible for the

remaining 17 girls . The London cases are as follow : No . 4 , who was a candidate at both elections in 18 97 , and , as she has 2561 votes in hand , her friends and supporters should experience no difficulty in securing her election ; No . 7 brings forward the

1555 votes , and No . 9 the 1080 votes which were polled for them last October ; and Nos . 22 , 24 , and 25 are applicants for the lirst time . The three in which London has a part interest with one or more Provinces or Districts are No . 10 , whose father ' s

services in Masonry have been distributed over various localities both at home and abroad , ancl who starts with 808 votes , which she obtained last autumn , and which , as this will be her last time of asking , will require to be very liberally supplemented in order

to ensure her success ; ancl No . 16 ( Kent and Surrey ) and No . 20 ( Kent , Malta , London , & c ) , who are both new candidates . Of the 17 girls from the Provinces and Abroad , ESSEX is responsible for Nos . s and 19 , the former of whom has 0 ^ 1 votes in hand ,

while the latter is a new candidate . The others are distributed as follows : No . 1 , who has stood three elections , and has this single remaining chance of winning election , hails from N . and S . V . ALES ( W . D . ) , and with 2871 already to her credit , there ought to

» e no difficulty in winning a place for her . No . 2 from S-\ AI . ES ( W . D . ) , brings forward 877 from her two previous

auempts ; and No . 3 ( BENGAL ) , who stands well with 2561 votes in hand for her last remaining chance . No . 6 ( VALPARAISO ) , ias 142 votes to the good , and No . 8 ( SUFFOLK ) , 8 7 8 votes ; « the others are new cases and include No 11 ( N . and E . YORKSHIRE ) ; No , 12 ( S . WALES , E . from LEICESTERSHIRE AND RUTLAND . AS regards other particulars we note that in 17 cases the fathers were subscribing members ol a lodge or lodges for ro years ancl upwards even to 20 , 23 , ancl 26 ycars , while sundry of them had held office in

lodge and Prov . G . Lodge , ancl about one-fourth were supporters of our Institutions . Of the whole 26 candidates 22 are fatherless , two motherless , and two have both parents living , The number of vacancies to be filled is 15 . Tlie election for tho

ROVAL MASONIC INSTITUTION FOR BOYS will take place at the Quarterly General Court of Governors and Subscribers whicii will be held on Friday , the 15 th April , at the hour of 12 noon . In this case the number of candidates is 50 —reduced to 49 by the withdrawal of a Dorsetshire boy—and

the vacancies to be filled 27 . Of the former 24 come forward from the election in October last , the other half being new applicants whose names have been placed on the list during the interval that has since elapsed . London is

responsible for 17 and has a part interest in five others , the remaining 27 hailing from Provinces or Districts Abroad . The London contingent comprises No . 2 , who at four previous attempts obtained 623 votes , which will count towards the result on this

occasion ; No . 3 , who has 977 votes in hand from the same number of applications ; No . 7 , who brings forward 1842 votes from the two elections of last year ; No . ir , who polled 432 votes in the same ballots ; and Nos . 19 , 24 , and 25 , who were

candidates for the first time in October , and bring forward five , 4 88 , and 1268 votes respectively . Nos . 26 , 28 , 30 , 31 , 32 , 40 , 41 , 44 , 4 8 , ancl 50 are new applicants , and will try their luck for the lirst time at this meeting . The five in which London has

a part interest are all new cases , Nos . 27 , 37 , and 39 hailing from London ancl Middlesex ; No . 34 from London and Surrey ; and No . 4 6 from London and North and East Yorkshire . Of the foregoing 22 applicants , No . 31 ( London ) and No . 39

( London and Middlesex ) have this one and only chance allowed . them of winning admission into the School , as in the event of failure they will be over 11 years of age , and their ^ names will be removed from the list in consequence . Of the 27 candidates

from the Provinces and Abroad , HAMPSHIRE AND THE ISLE OF WIGHT sends four , of whom Nos . 17 and 18 who competed in October last bring forward 9 and 93 votes respectively , while Nos . 35 and 43 are new cases . ESSEX furnishes three

applicants , namely , No . 1 , who has only this chance left him , but has 1547 votes in hand and his friends , if they bestir themselves , ought to carry him successfully through ; No . 16 , who must win this time or fail altogether , has 144 votes to the good ; and No .

2 t with 6 votes . DEVONSHIRE furnishes two candidates , No . 4 , who began his candidature in October , 18 96 , and has 445 votes to the good , and No . 20 , who secured 885 votes last October . Nos . 9 and 23 hail from BUCKINGHAMSHIRE , the former having

103 votes and the latter 156 9 votes , and there are 16 others , of whom No . 5 ( NORTHANTS AND HUNTS ) starts with 47 8 votes ; No . 6 ( GUERNSEY AND ALDERNEY ) , with 1316 votes ; No . 8
