Z ., 3 rd Grand Principal Kent , by the companions of the St . George ' s Chapter in

recognition of his most valuable services to the chapter . April , iSgo . " In making the presentation , Jie M . E . Z . dilated on the great advantages the chapter had derived from having at its formation and during the first year of its existence the services of so experienced a Mason as Comp . Ward , who had thought no trouble too great to ensure the

establishment of the chapter on a sound basis , and had watched over its interests with the greatest solicitude . It was the earnest hope of the companions that Comp . Ward might long be spared to continue to give the chapter the benefit of his support . Comp . Horatio Ward , in a few words , expressed his deep sense of the honour conferred upon him , and his hope

that he might be enabled still to promote the welfare of the St . George ' s Chapter . The chapter being closed , the companions adjourned to the Dolohin Hotel , where a very excellent banquet was provided . Tne usual loyal and Masonic toasts were given and duly honoured , and the companions separated at an early hour , after a most successful and pleasant meeting . It may be mentioned that a similar jewel was presented

to Comp . Ward by the St . Michael ' s Chapter , No . 1273 , Sittingbourne , some three or four weeks since , on his retirement from the chair of Z . of that chapter , which he had filled for two years in succession . Comp . Ward has laboured in many ways to diffuse Royal Arch Masonry in the Prv- nre nf Kent , where he has been a founder of several chapters , and now fills the distinguished position of Third Grand Principal of the province .

vote of thanks be recorded to the Installing Principals , Comps . Paterson and Dalrymple , for their services . Comp . Collin moved , and Comp . Col . Sewell supported the motion , that one guinea be sent to the Peterborough Cathedral Restoration Fund , which was carried . The chapter was then closed , and the companions subsequently partook of refreshments in the banquet hall .

NORTH WOOLWICH . Henley Chapter ( No . 1472 ) . —The installation meeting of the above excellent little chapter took place on Tuesday , the 15 th inst ., at the Three Crowns Hotel . Comps . C . Jolly , Z . ; S . Hill , H . ; and C . H . Canning , J . ; assisted by Comps . A . Penfold , P . Z ., P . Z . 13 and 913 , P . P . G . ist A . S . Kent ; and E . West , P . Z ., P . Z . and

Treas . 13 , opened the chapter , and the companions being admitted , the minutes of the previous convocation were read and confirmed . The ballot was then taken for Bros . S . E . Southgate , S . W . 700 , and J . S . Simm , 13 S 2 , and proved unanimous . Bro . Simm , being in attendance , was admitted , and exalted to the Supreme Degree . The Principals and Comp . Wood , acting P . S ., doing the work

admirably . Comp . Penfold then , by special request , assumed the chair as Installing Officer , and with the full ceremonial installed Comps . Hill in the chair of of Z ; C H . Canning in that of H . ; and C . T . Lewis in that of J . The M . E . Z . invested his officers as follows : Comps . J . Savage , S . N . ; B . B . Brayshaw . S . E . ; R . J . Warren , P . Z ., P . Z . Francis White Chapter , H . 13 , and P . P . G . Std . Br . Essex , Treas . ;

C . Wood , P . S . ; B . Curtis , ist A . S . ; J . Bradford , 2 nd A . S . ; G . H . Setton , D . C . ; and F . Davies and J . S . Simm , Stwds . Comp . Penfold then gave the several addresses most eloquently ; in fact , this grand old man surpassed himself in the perfectness and feeling with which he did the ceremony from first to last . He was presented with a vote of thanks , the same to be inscribed in the minutes of

the chapter , for which he returned thanks . Comp . Jolly was presented with a handsome P . Z . ' s jewel of the value of 10 guineas for services rendered the chapter during his year of office , for which he returned thanks , and then the chapter was closed . The banquet reflected credit upon the taste of Bro . Richardson , the manager of the establishment , and , on the

cloth being cleared , the M . E . Z . gave the usual loyal and Grand Chapter toasts , which were drunk with enthusiasm . The I . P . Z ., Comp . Jolly , then proposed the toast of "The M . E . Z ., " and , in response , Comp . Hill said he was thankful for the kind and eulogistic terms in which Comp . Jolly had proposed the toast , and for the hearty manner in which the companions had received it . He would do his best for the prosperity of the chapter , and

if he should break down , he was glad to know that Comp . Jolly would be able , not only to pick him up , but work the ritual for him if necessary . Ever since he had joined the chapter it had been to him one continual enjoyment and real Masonic treat , and he trusted so to carry out his duties that at the end of his year of office he should receive the same reward that Comp . Jolly had that day received at their hands .

Comp . Penfohl , in response to a hearty reception of the toast of " The Installing Officer , " said it had been his proud privilege to install every one of the Principals since the consecration of the chapter . How he had done it he would not say , but at any rate it seemed to meet with their approbation , and that was his greatest reward . He had often thought that it would be as well to have a deputy to

follow him in case of accident . He was glad to say that the utmost good feeling existed amongst them , and he could safely say that the harmony of the chapter , and also its excellent working , was not surpassed by any chapter in the district . He looked forward to a great increase in the numbers , and also of the prosperity of the chapter . The M . E . Z . had said that the time must come when they would

not have him amongst them . Well , he trusted that time would be long hence , for he could assure them that so long as he had health and strength he should always do his best for its prosperity and continued success . Comp . Canning , in responding for " The Second andThird Principals , " said it would be his study to work most assiduously for the good of the chapter , the same as he had in

every office he had hitherto held in it . Comp . Lewis trusted he would be able to attend to the duties imposed upon him better in the future than in the past . The ordeal he had that day gone through would never be wiped from his memory , and if the chapter only met with the same success as the mother Craft lodge had met with , it would become one of the best in the

metropolitan district , and to ensure that success his utmost efforts should be devoted . In responding for "The Past Principals , " Comp . Jolly said he had that day reached the summit of his ambition as a Mason . Comp . Warren also responded . Comp . Woodley , in responding for "The Visitors , " declai ed that he had never heard the ceremony of

exaltation so ably carried out as it had been that day by Comp . Jolly , who was not only word perfect , but most eloquent and impressive . He heartily thanked them for the treat given him in hearing that ceremony , but also the splendid work of Comp . Penfold in the ceremony of installation . " The Exaltee " responded to his health , and then " The Officers " and Janitor ' s toast closed the proceedings .

PLUM STEAD . Pattison Chapter ( No . 913 ) . —The election meeting of the above powerful chapter—the strongest in the province of Kent—took place at the Freemasons' Hall , Mount Pleasant , on Thursday , the 17 th inst ., when there were present Comps . J . H . Roberts , as Z . ; E . Palmer , H . ; S . Clarke , J . ; E . Denton , P . Z ., P . P . G . P . S . ; T . D .

Hayes , P . Z ., P . P . G . 2 nd A . S . ; Major Eugene Sweny , P . Z ., P . P . G . R . ; R . J . Cook , P . Z . ; Dr . Bernays , P . Z . ; C . Jolly , P . Z . ( Hon . ) ; F . Tyler , J . Topp , H . Ough , VV . Harris , G . Frost , L . C . Chasteaneuff , G . H . Letton , G . H . Porter , G . Mitchell , G . Laurance , J . H . Porter , J . Hooton , and C . Ellis , all of the chapter ; Capt . G . Spinks , P . Z . 13 ; and G . Bashford , 515 .

lhe chapter having been opened , and the minutes confirmed , the ballot was taken for Bro . VV . Davidson , 913 , and proved unanimous . The ceremony of exaltation was admirably carried out by the Principals and officers , although Comp . Roberts was evidently troubled with a severe sore throat . The election of Principals and officers then took place , with the following result : < ~ omps . Palmer ( beinc ;

unanimously elected ) , Z . ; S . Clarke , H . ; C . H . Lawson , J . ; H . J . Butter , P . Z ., P . P . G . P . S ., Treas . ; A . Penfold , P . Z ., P . P . G . ist A . S ., S . E . ; E . Morris , S . N . ; W . C . Taylor , P . S . ; C J . Clapham , ist A . S . ; G . Nichols , 2 nd A . S . ; H . Mason , P . Z ., P . P . G . Std . Br ., D . C ; and VV . J . Lardner , Janitor . Comp . Roberts was voted a P . Z . ' s jewel , and then the chapter was closed , and the companions banqueted .

The usual loyal and Grand Chapter toasts having been honoured , Comp . Hayes in responding for "Comp . Eastes P . G . H ., and the rest of the Prov . Grand Officers Present and Past , " said he was very pleased to tell them that the Health of their beloved Grand Superintendent , Earl Amherst , had greatly improved , and so much so that he would be able to

take the chair at a great meeting coming off on the following Saturday . He well remembered some 14 years ago , seeing his lordship at a meeting at Dover , held for the purpose of establishing a Grand Chapter of the Province of Kent , convened by Comp . the Rev . T . Robinson . There were present beside himself from that district Comps . Coupland and Penfold , and at that

meeting his lordship kindly came forward and accepted the office of Grand Superintendent , and their esteemed Comp . Coupland was appointed the first G . P . S . of the province . They started with a very small number , but now he was proud to say they had not only numbers , but the very select among the Masons of the province in their ranks . He thanked them for the toast , and wished the chapter

and the province every success . Comp . Cook , I . P . Z . then proposed the toast of "The M . E . Z ., " and he said it was the last time that he should have the privilege of proposing it , yet he hoped for many years to come the toast of the First Principal of the chapter would always be received with enthusiasm . The First

Principal of that chapter was always a most excellent man and a Mason , and not only by profession , but by fact . They all delighted in honouring the First Principal of that chapter , and as that was the last time they would have an opportunity of proposing the health of their excellent Comp . Roberts , he wished they would drink it with additional

vigour . The M . E . Z ., in response , said he was getting near the end of his year of office . It had been a most pleasant one , and he would take that opportunity of thanking them all , from the Past Z . to the lay companion , for the great kindness and support they had accorded him during that period . He had that night carried out the work under very great disadvantages , the doctor having actually forbidden him to

attend the chapter . He , however , was determined to come , and could only again thank them for their hearty support . Comp . Palmer , in responding for " The Second and Third Principals , " said he had that night arrived at the summit of his Masonic ambition , for he believed no Mason could have a higher ambition than to be elected the First

Principal of a chapter . All he could say was that , if he had done his duty in the past to their satisfaction , that was all he desired . Comp . Clarke said he should be very remiss if he had not done his duty , considering the splendid example set him and every officer of the chapter by those excellent Masons

who had preceded him . Should he arrive at the honourable position of Z . of that chapter , they might depend upon it that nothing should be left undone on his part to sustain its unsullied reputation . The other toasts were "The Past Z ' s ., " "The Visitors , " "The Exaltee , " and "The Masonic Press , " and then the proceedings , which were most enjoyable , closed .

TWICKENHAM . Sir Francis Burdett Chapter ( No . 1503 ) . The installation meeting of this chapter was held on the 16 th instant at the Albany Hotel . Among those in attendance were Comps . the Rev . R . Hosken , M . A ., M . E . Z . ; G . A . Dunkley , P . P . G . Org ., H ., M . E . Z . elect ; A . Gurney , J ., H . elect ; Capt . Walls , P . Z ., P . P . G . P . Soj ., S . E .

E . VV . Jenkins , S . N ., J . elect ; VV . Taylor , P . Z ., P . P . G . J ., Treas . ; H . Jenkins , P . S . ; Lambert , P . Z ., ist A . S . ; A . Toulmin , jun ., 2 nd A . S . ; and Rev . S . T . H . Saunders , P . Z ., P . P . G . J . Visitors : Comps . J . T . Briggs , P . Z . 177 , P . P . G . P . S . ; and Treves , M . E . Z . 720 . The minutes of the previous meeting having been read and confirmed , the installation of the Three Principals was

performed by Comps . Rev . S . T . H . Saunders and J . T . Briggs , assisted by the S . E . The following investitures then took place : Comps . Capt . Walls , S . E . ; H . Jenkins , S . N . ; VV . Taylor , Treas . ; Lambert , P . S . ; Toulmin , jun ., 1 st A . S . ; and Harrison , Janitor . A Past Principal ' s jewel ( manufactured by Comp . George Kenning ) , having been presented to Comp . Rev . R . Hosken , the report of

the Audit Committee was received and adopted , and a vote of thanks passed to the Treasurer . A vote of thanks was also passed with acclamation to the Installing Principals . A vote of condolence having been passed to the family of the late Comp . Capt . A . Bunn , ist A . S ., the chapter was closed , and the companions adjourned to the

banquet . The M . E . Z . proved a very excellent , genial , and musical chairman . The customary toasts were given , and before the proceedings terminated the companions wished the M . E . Z ., who is about leaving England on a professional tour , a , hearty bon vjyage .

S ., doing the work

admirably . Comp . Penfold then , by special request , assumed the chair as Installing Officer , and with the full ceremonial installed Comps . Hill in the chair of of Z ; C H . Canning in that of H . ; and C . T . Lewis in that of J . The M . E . Z . invested his officers as follows : Comps . J . Savage , S . N . ; B . B . Brayshaw . S . E . ; R . J . Warren , P . Z ., P . Z . Francis White Chapter , H . 13 , and P . P . G . Std . Br . Essex , Treas . ;

C . Wood , P . S .

Bashford , 515 .

lhe chapter having been opened , and the minutes confirmed , the ballot was taken for Bro . VV . Davidson , 913 , and proved unanimous . The ceremony of exaltation was admirably carried out by the Principals and officers , although Comp . Roberts was evidently troubled with a severe sore throat . The election of Principals and officers then took place , with the following result : < ~ omps . Palmer ( beinc ;

unanimously elected ) , Z .
