MASONIC AND GENERAL TIDINGS

The General Committee of the Royal Masonic Institution for Boys will hold their next regular monthly meeting at Freemasons' Hall , on Saturday , the 3 rd prox . The weekly displays of fireworks by Messrs . Brock at the Crystal Palace commence on Thursday , the 15 th prox ., and the illuminated garden fetes , with al-frcsco ballet , in June .

The Court of Common Council at its meeting on the 17 th inst . voted a sum of £ 2100 towards the Postal Jubilee celebration , which is arranged to be held at the Guildhall on the igth prox . By permission of the Duke of Westminster , a morning concert will be held at Grosvenor House on Tuesday next ,

the 29 th inst ., in aid of "The Girls' Friendly Society Recreation Rooms for Working Girls in East London . " The Emperor and Empress of Germany entertained the Ambassadors of the Great Powers and their ladies at dinner at the Palace on Saturday last , among the guests being Bro . Sir E . B . Malet and Lady Ermyntrude Malet .

lhe Prince of Wales arrived at Charing Cross from Paris , after a rough passage , at 5 a . m . on Saturday morning last . Later in the day , his Royal Highness , with the Princess and Prince George and the Princesses Victoria and Maud , left Marlborough House for Sandringham .

. The 20 th annual ball in aid of the funds of the Metropolitan and City Police Orphanage was held at the Cannon-street Hotel on the evening of the 17 th inst ., when among those present were Bro . Lord Mayor Sir H . A . Isaacs and the Lady Mayoress , and the Sheriffs , Bros . Harris and Alderman Knill .

On Saturday last , her Majesty reviewed the Alpine Chasseurs at a spot some five miles from Aix-les-Bains . and after slowly riding up and down the lines , expressed her admiration of the troops , and thanked the Colonel , in command of the two battalions , congratulating him on the line appearance of his men .

Messrs . J . R . Parkington and Co . state that the total quantity of champagne forwarded from the champagne districts for the year ending March 31 st amounted to 23 , 324 , 571 bottles , being an increase of 7 60 , 48 7 bottles , as compared with 1 SS 9 . Present stocks in cask and bottles equal about 109 , 575 , 750 bottles , or quite five years' consumption .

At a special court of the Governors of the Sons of the Clergy , held on Saturday , at the Corporation House , Bloomsbury-place , the Rev . Sir E . Graham Moon in the chair , Bro . Alderman Sir Reginald Hanson was unanimously elected a Treasurer of the Corporation , to fill the vacancy amongst the three Treasurers occasioned by the death of Bro . Alderman Stone .

On Saturday last , at Witley Court , Worcestershire , the marriage of Bro . Viscount Weymouth , M . P ., eldest son of Bro . the Marquis of Bath , with Miss Violet C . Mordaunt . daughter of Sir Charles Mordaunt , Bath , was celebrated by the Rev . Canon Melville in the presence of a large and fashionable congregation , among whom were the Duchess of Athole and Lady Dorothea Murray , and Bro . the Earl of Hardwicke .

Miss Blanche Grey s fourth annual amateur dramatic performance in aid of the funds of the Norwood Cottage Hospital will take place at the Crystal Palace Opera Theatre on Monday evening , the aSth inst ., commencing at 7 . 30 p . m . " Plot and Passion , " Tom Taylor's celebrated drama , will be acted , preceded by " Found in a Four Wheeler . " The military band of the Crystal Palace will perform during the evening under the direction of Mr . D . Godfrey , jun .

On Friday , the iSth inst ., the Provincial Grand Lodge of Tyrone and Fermanagh met in the Town Hall , Enniskillen , Ireland . Bro . Col . John G . Irvine , D . L ., Dep . Prov . G . M ., in the absence of Bro . Sir J . M . Stewart , Bart ., D . L ., occupied the chair , and in the various other offices the regular officers ( or in their unavoidable absence a substitute ) assisted the acting P . G . M . in transacting the usual quarterly business .

On Thursday , the 17 th inst ., Bro . J . L . Carson , Associate Quatuor Coronati , and J . W . S 91 ( I . C . ) , delivered a lecture on the history and symbolism of Freemasonry before the brethren of Lodges Nos . S 91 , 205 , and 473 , Enniskillen , Ireland . Bro . Obadiah Ternan , M . D ., Prov . G . Sec , in

his usual felicitous manner , occupied the chair . There was a large and attentive assembly of brethren . The lecture lasted for about an hour and a quarter , after which the usual votes of thanks were ¦ passed to the Lecturer and Chairman , and the brethren separated delighted with their evening's entertainment and instruction .

Although it seems that the only gentlemen likely to offer themselves to the Livery for election of Sheriffs of London for next year are Bro . Augustus Harris and Captain Parkington , a very influential Committee , composed of members of the Corporation and others , has been obtained to secure Hro . Harris ' s election in the event of any other

candidate coming forward . Mr . Alderman lyler , the next alderman for the Shrievalty , has intimated that , in consequence of severe illness in his family , he will not be able to offer himself for election this year . Bro . Harris will then have associated with him as his Under-Sheriff our well-known Bro . Tom Beard .

Thanks to the liberality of the Drapers' Company , the forthcoming Photographic Exhibition in the City of London will find a splendid home in their hall in Throgmortonstreet—one of the finest of those " lordly pleasure houses " which the old City Guilds have substituted for their more modest halls mostly within the last half century . It stands on the site of the palace and gardens of Cromwell , Earl of Essex , and is the scene of the curious anecdote of

aristocratic spoliation to which Professor Morlcy s edition of Stow ' s "Survey" has recently directed attention . It consists of a spacious quadrangular building , with a fountain in the centre court . 1 he exhibition , which has been organised by the Photographic Section of the London Chamber of Commerce , will open on the last day of the present month , and continue open till the 10 th of June . It will be entirely free to the public .

Bro . the Duke of Abercorn will occupy the chair at the next house dinner of the National Conservative Club , which will be held on the 17 th May . Bro . Dr . W . A . _ Barrett , who was Grand Organist in iSSS , is one of thesix candidates for the Gresham Professorship of Music , rendered vacant by the death of Dr . Henry Wylde .

The Germauia states that the Pope , in receiving the depution of Austrian pilgrims a few days ago , remarked to the editor of a Catholic journal who was among them , "You have a hard battle to fight with the Jewish journalists and the Freemasons . "

The grand fancy bazaar in aid of the funds of the University College Hospital , to be held in the grounds of University College , Gower-street , W . C , will be opened by H . R . H . the Duchess of Fife on ' 1 hursday , 5 th June , at 12 noon , instead of the 4 th June , as previously announced .

The Fifteen Sections will be worked in the Israel Lodge of Instruction at the Rising Sun , Globe-road , Mile End , on the evening of the 27 th inst ., at G p . m . precisely . Bro . S . It is officially announced that her Majesty will hold Drawing Rooms at Buckingham Palace on Friday , the gth May , and Friday , the 16 th—instead of 15 th—May , while the Prince of Wales will hold a 1 evee at St . James ' s Palace , on behalf of her Majesty , on Tuesday , the Gth prox .

An order from the Admiralty was sent to Sheerness on Saturday last directing the first class composite gun vessel Thrush ( 6 ) S 05 tons , 1200 horse power , to be commissioned on the Gth prox . by Lieutenant Prince George of Wales , with a complement of 75 officers and men , for service on the North American and West Indies station .

Bro . Charles F . Pardon died on Friday last at the age of 40 years from congestion of the lungs . Bvo . Pardon was the President of the Press Club this year , and was to have presided at the annual dinner of the institution on the 26 th inst . He was much esteemed in Masonic circles , and his death will be widely regretted .

Bro . Alderman Ecclcston Gibb , who has been suffering from prostration , consequent on a severe attack of influenza , left England on Thursday , the 17 th inst ., for the West Indies . His medical advisers assured him that the sea voyage will thoroughly restore him to health , and that on his return in June he will be able to resume his political and municipal duties with renewed vigour .

The Rev . F . R . Pearson , rector of St . Alban ' s , Manchester , preached at Holy Trinity , Southport , on Sunday afternoon , on the occasion of a Masonic service in aid of the new church of St . Simon and St . Jude , High Park , Southport , the foundation-stone of which was laid by the Earl of Lathom , D . G . M ., with full Masonic ritual in October last . The church was crowded . Among those present at St . Paul ' s , Knightsbridge , on the 17 th inst ., at the marriage of the Hon . Charles Hardinge , second son of Viscount Hardinge , with the Hon . Winifred Sturt , second daughter of Lord Alington , were the Princess of Wales and her daughters , the Princesses Victoria and Maud , Bro . the Earl and Countess Granville , Bro . the Earl and Countess of Arran , Lady Suffield , Lady Wantage , and Sir Oscar Clayton .

The bronze equestrian statue of the late Prince Consort , the Jubilee offering to the Queen by the women of the United Kingdom , will be unveiled in Windsor Great Park on Monday , the 12 th . \ ay , in the presence of her Majesty , the Prince and Princess of Wales , and other members of the Royal Family . The front panel of the pedestal will bear a suitable inscription , which will be repeated on the other panels in Latin , Gaelic , and Sanskrit .

A short time ago a controversy arose respecting the age of the Sun , Square , and Compasses Lodge , No . 119 , Whitehaven . Owing principally to the researches of Bro . R . W . Moore , P . M ., the matter was satisfactorily settled in favour of the Whitehaven lodge , and , at a special meeting of the brethren , a beautiful Past Master ' s jewel was presented lo Bro . Moore as a token of their appreciation of his championship of the lodge . The presentation was made by Bro . J . Barr , P . M .

The Queen left Aix-les-Bains for Darmstadt on Tuesday afternoon , after taking leave of the military and municipal authorities , and making presents to those who had attended on her during her stay . The route from the villa to the station was lined by troops , and the carriage in which her Majesty drove to the station was so full of flowers that it

was difficult to catch a sight of her as she passed . On arriving at Darmstadt she will remain the guest of her sonin-law , the Grand Duke of Hesse , till the 29 th inst ., and will then leave on her return to England . Her grandson , the Emperor William , will arrive at Darmstadt on a visit to her Majesty on the 25 th inst . ( to-day ) .

On Wednesday , Bro . VV . A . Baskcomb undertook the somewhat trying task of entertaining , single handed , between 400 and 500 poor people at the All Saints' boys ' school-room , Huxton-street , E . The Rev . HerveyA . Mason occupied the chair , and Bro . Baskcomb worked manfull y through an excellent programme , which included " The Village Blacksmith , " "The Brave Old Oak , " 'Some

Echoes from the Cotton Fields , " "The Pilot , " and "Our 'Armonic Club , " together with some telling readings . At the conclusion the audience , which had frequently given vent to its delight while the songs , & c , were in progress , greeted Bro . Baskcomb with several rounds of applause . A telegram was received in the course of the evening from Bro . Henry Irving , who thus forwarded his hearty good

wishes to the All Saints' boys , and to Bro . Baskcomb his congratulations , it being Bro . Baskcomb ' s birthday , which he had chosen for the performance . in the Mediterranean last week , has left London for Normanhurst Court , Battle , Sussex . Bros . Lord Halsbury , Lord Chancellor , and Lord George Hamilton , First Lord of the Admiralty , attended the Cabinet Council held at the Foreign Office , on Tuesday .

The Queen has been pleased to approve that the Earl of Kilmorey be invested as a Knight of the most Illustrious Order of St . Patrick , in the room of the late Bro . the Duke of Manchester . Lady Charles Beresford , after spending Easter in Paris , goes on to Gibraltar , where she will meet her husband , Bro . Lord Charles Beresford , and will return to England about the middle of next month .

Bros . General Viscount Wolseley , Sir Reginald Welby Justice Mathew , and Sir Edward Clarke , Q . C , M . P ., were among those present at the dinner given in the hall of Lincoln ' s Inn on Monday ( Grand Day ) . Bro the Marquis of Hartington , who since his serious illness has been travelling in Egypt , and ascended the Nile , reached Devonshire House , alter a few days' rest in Paris , on Sunday evening . We are glad to learn that his lordship is completely restored to health .

The Baroness Burdett-Coutts and Bro . VV . Burdett-Coutts , M . P ., will have a dinner party in honour of Mr . H . M . Stanley at their residence in Stratton-street , Piccadilly , on Saturday , the 10 th prox ., and later in the evening there will be a distinguished party invited to meet the great explorer . v

Some 400 friends of the Jews' Deaf and Dumb Home at Notting Hill , among whom were Bro . the Lord Mayor , Sir H . A . Isaacs , and the Lady Mayoress , attended the triennial ball held at the Hotel Metopole on Tuesday evening . It is expected that the institution will benefit substantially .

v iscount Crawley , eldest son of Bro . the Earl of Onslow , Governor of New Zealand , has arrived on a visit to this country for the benefit of his health , after a severe attack of typhoid fever , believed to have been brought on by the defective drainage of the Governor ' s official residence at Wellington .

Prince Albert Victor of Wales arrived at the Pirteus on board her Majesty ' s cruiser Scout , on the 17 th inst ., and was met on landing by the King of Greece , the Duke and Duchess of Sparta , Bro . Sir E . J . Monson , her Majesty ' s Minister Plenipotentiary to the Court of Athens , and the other functionaries of the legation and Consulate General .

Bro . the Earl of Zetland ( Lord Lieutenant of Ireland ) and the Countess of Zetland , with Lady Hilda Dundas , and attended by his lordship ' s aides-de-camp , were present at Punchestown Meeting on Tuesday , a large and fashionable concourse of spectators being also present , and giving their excellencies a hearty welcome .

Bros . General Goldsworthy , M . P ., Baron Henry de Worms , M . P ., Stanley-Langton , M . P ., and General Sir Edward Hamley , M . P ., were guests at the dinner given by Sir H . Havelock Allen , M . P , at the House of Commons on Monday to his cousin , Sir Arthur E . Havelock , on the occasion of the latter ' s departure for Ceylon , of which he has been appointed Governor .

Bro . Lionel Rignold , whose impersonation of Jack Gong in " The Green Bushes" has set the seal upon his popularity in London as a low comedian , is a cousin of the wellknown actors , Bros . William and George Rignold . His father was Mr . Harry Rignold , who in his day was a celebrated delineator of nautical character at East End theatres , and afterwards at Drury Lane under the regime of Mr . Chatterton .

MASONIC BALL AT DAUTPORD . —On Wednesday , the 16 th inst ., the first soiree dansante of the Lodge of Emulation was given at the Bull Hotel . The company numbered about 70 , and an excellent string band from Bexley performed . The Committee consisted of Bros . T . Jenkins , C . Hind , F . Barton , VV . J . . Light ( the efficient M . C . ) , J .

Brock , (_ .. D . Mears , W . Creig , andT . Wills . The brethren wore their Masonic decorations , conspicuous amongst them being Bro . N . Martin , the oldest P . M . present . The Victoria Assembly Rooms were beautifully decorated , and the catering of Host Startup was elegant andlfaultless . The success of the ball was brilliant .

C . ) , delivered a lecture on the history and symbolism of Freemasonry before the brethren of Lodges Nos . S 91 , 205 , and 473 , Enniskillen , Ireland . Bro . Obadiah Ternan , M . D ., Prov . G . Sec , in

his usual felicitous manner , occupied the chair . There was a large and attentive assembly of brethren . The lecture lasted for about an hour and a quarter , after which the usual votes of thanks were ¦ passed to the Lecturer and Chairman , and the brethren separated delighted with their evening's entertainment and instruction .

Although it seems that the only gentlemen likely to offer themselves to the Livery for election of Sheriffs of London for next year are Bro . Augustus Harris and Captain Parkington , a very influential Committee , composed of members of the Corporation and others , has been obtained to secure Hro . Harris ' s election in the event of any other

candidate coming forward . Mr . Alderman lyler , the next alderman for the Shrievalty , has intimated that , in consequence of severe illness in his family , he will not be able to offer himself for election this year . Bro . Harris will then have associated with him as his Under-Sheriff our well-known Bro . Tom Beard .

Thanks to the liberality of the Drapers' Company , the forthcoming Photographic Exhibition in the City of London will find a splendid home in their hall in Throgmortonstreet—one of the finest of those " lordly pleasure houses " which the old City Guilds have substituted for their more modest halls mostly within the last half century . It stands on the site of the palace and gardens of Cromwell , Earl of Essex , and is the scene of the curious anecdote of

aristocratic spoliation to which Professor Morlcy s edition of Stow ' s "Survey" has recently directed attention . It consists of a spacious quadrangular building , with a fountain in the centre court . 1 he exhibition , which has been organised by the Photographic Section of the London Chamber of Commerce , will open on the last day of the present month , and continue open till the 10 th of June . It will be entirely free to the public .

Bro . Charles F . Pardon died on Friday last at the age of 40 years from congestion of the lungs . Bvo . Pardon was the President of the Press Club this year , and was to have presided at the annual dinner of the institution on the 26 th inst . He was much esteemed in Masonic circles , and his death will be widely regretted .

Bro . Alderman Ecclcston Gibb , who has been suffering from prostration , consequent on a severe attack of influenza , left England on Thursday , the 17 th inst ., for the West Indies . His medical advisers assured him that the sea voyage will thoroughly restore him to health , and that on his return in June he will be able to resume his political and municipal duties with renewed vigour .

The Rev . F . R . Pearson , rector of St . Alban ' s , Manchester , preached at Holy Trinity , Southport , on Sunday afternoon , on the occasion of a Masonic service in aid of the new church of St . Simon and St . Jude , High Park , Southport , the foundation-stone of which was laid by the Earl of Lathom , D . G . M ., with full Masonic ritual in October last . The church was crowded . M ., the matter was satisfactorily settled in favour of the Whitehaven lodge , and , at a special meeting of the brethren , a beautiful Past Master ' s jewel was presented lo Bro . Moore as a token of their appreciation of his championship of the lodge . The presentation was made by Bro . J . Barr , P . M .

The Queen left Aix-les-Bains for Darmstadt on Tuesday afternoon , after taking leave of the military and municipal authorities , and making presents to those who had attended on her during her stay . The route from the villa to the station was lined by troops , and the carriage in which her Majesty drove to the station was so full of flowers that it

was difficult to catch a sight of her as she passed . On arriving at Darmstadt she will remain the guest of her sonin-law , the Grand Duke of Hesse , till the 29 th inst ., and will then leave on her return to England . Her grandson , the Emperor William , will arrive at Darmstadt on a visit to her Majesty on the 25 th inst . ( to-day ) .
