Provincial Meetings.

into the breach and brought up the list of subscriptions to a satisfactory total , was one which would be remembered with satisfaction . . The Worshipful Master , proposing " The V . W . the Dppiity Provincial Grand Master , and the rest of the Provincial Grand Officers , Present and Past , " remarked thai he was sorry to say that the Deputy Provincial Grand

Master was not with them that day , due to the fact that he and his family were snatching a brief holiday . He was pleased to see so many Provincial Grand Officers present . H * desired to point out that the-floral decorations of the table had been prepared specially by the daughters of Freemasons . Some of these ladies were the daughteis of their brother Guimaraens , whose son they had so recently

initiated . As Bro . Guimaraens , the senior Prov . Grand Officer present , would speak to the other toasts , he would not couple his name with the present one , but would ask Bro . Street to respond . Bro . Street was the third Master of the lodge , and he did not think it would have been possible to have selected a more genial man for the office . What with his musical talent , generosity of temperament , and general

good fellowship , they had been able to pass a thoroughly happy time under his rule , as , indeed , they had passed under all their Masters . Bro . Street , P . M ., acknowledged the compliment paid him in suitable terms , and added that his love of music would prevent him from making a long speech , and thus keeping the brethren from listening to the grand musical feast before them .

Song— "Thinking of Home . " Bro . Stride , I . P . M ., proposed "The Worshipful Master . " He said they had had many toasts that evening , and after the harmonious music they had just listened to , he was bound to say he was " thinking of heme , " and that if he had gone home a little sooner the duty of proposing the toast would have fallen into abler hands . The toast was

par excellence the toast of the evening , and he was sure they would all endorse his opinion , at any rate , so far as the Caterham Lodge was concerned . The present occupant of the chair was very popular in the lodge , and his conduct had added lustre to their meetings and to the reputation of the lodge . He was the founder of the lodge , and nothing

had given him greater pleasure than to have had the honour of placing in the chair that day so old , so respected , and so distinguished a Mason as Bro . Sandeman . He regretted that it had not been left to a more experienced Mason ( o chronicle the virtues of the W . M ., and he could only express the hope felt by all the brethren of the lodge , that Bro . Sandeman would have a prosperous year of office .

Bro . Sandeman , W . M ., replied . He regarded itas a great honour in having been placed , for the second time in the history of the lodge , in the chair . He was the first W . M . of the lodge . One of its founders , Dr . Eady , had left the neighbourhood . Bro . Webb had left them owing to terrible distress at home , for which they all grieved , and he hoped that if any near friends of Bro . Webb were present , that

they would tell him that allusion was made to his name in terms of sympathy . In conclusion , he assured the brethren that he appreciated their kindness and confidence , and would do all in his power to bring credit on himself and honour on the Craft . He sincerely hoped that it might please the Great Architect of the Universe to permit them to meet together for many years to come , and to love each other as Masons should do .

The W . M . next gave " The Visitors . " He said their little meetings were frequently enlivened hy the presence of visitors , and on that occasion they were favoured with the presence of many visitors whom they were glad to see , especiall y Col . Money , Prov . G . M . They also had other friends , including Major-General Rowcroft , a gentleman , who like himself , had passed a long time in India . There

were present , he observed , three Bengalees and r ne Madras brother who represented that country . With the toast he coupled the names of Bros . Major-General Rowcroft , Col . Sharpe , and Major Rawson , who acknowledged the compliment . The Worshipful Master next gave "The Past Masters of the Lodge . " He said the lodge had always had good Past Masters . The second one was Bro . Tomkins , a

most genial brother , who was succeeded by Bro . Street , who gave way to Bro . Guimaraens . It was the custom when the W . M . went out of the chair , with some lodges , to present him with a jewel . Personally he was opposed to the custom . In tie Caterham Lodge instead of a jewel they gave a silver mug . The last mug was given to Bro . llall . He now asked Bro . Stride to accept the silver mug which he

held in his hand , not as a full tribute of their estimation , but raiher as a small token of their esleem . Bro . Stride , I . P . M ., promptly replied . He had spent many pleasant evenings in connection with the Caterham Ixidge , but he certainly did not anticipate such an exhibition of the esteem with which he was held by the brethren . He should treasure the mug as a souvenir of

pleasant days , and should hand it down to his sons , and he hoped lhat when they looked at the mug it would be an incentive to Ihem to follow in his footsteps . In conclusion he acknowledged his indebtedness to Bros . Hall , I . P . M . ; H . E . Stenning , P . M . ; Sardeman , P . M . ; and other

olhcers of the lodge . Other toasts were "The Initiate , " responded to by Bro . Tucker ; "The Treasurer and Secretary , " replied to by Bros . Guimaraens and Hall , and "I he Officers , " an enjoyable festival being brought to a conclusion by the Tyler ' s toast .
