BANK-RATE REDUCED . —The directors of the Bank of England , at their meeting on Thursday , reduced the Bank-rate from 4 per cent ., at which it has stood since 25 th January last , to 3 J per cent . A PARTIAL ECLIPSE of the sun will take on Monday afternoon next between three and five o ' clock . FOR THE purpose of a central day school for blind children , the School Board for London has purchased Elm Court , Court-road , in the West Lambeth Division , of Sir Albert Altman for the sum of £ 4600 .

BRO . THE LORD MAYOR AND LADY MAYORESS have consented to perform the opening ceremony at a bazaar to be held on Monday , the 25 th prox ., in the newlyerected schools of the parish of St . John , Clapham , in aid of the school building fund . BRO . EMRA HOLMES has received , "by command , " the thanks of her Majesty the Queen for his verses on the attempted assassination of H . R . H . the Prince of Wales , M . W . G . M . He has also received a graceful letter from Miss Knollys conveying the thanks of H . R . H . the Princess of Wales .

WE ARE pleased to learn that Bro . Sir Alfred Bevan , Past G . Treas ., Sheriff of London has so far recovered from his recent illness as to enable him to attend to his official duties during the daytime : but his medical advisers absolutely prohibit his attendance at any dinners or evening functions for the present . ROYAL MASONIC INSTITUTION FOR BOYS . —Their Royal Highnesses the Duke and Duchess of Connaught will drive to Wood Green on Friday afternoon , 1 st June , to distribute the prizes to the boys of this Institution . A limited number of tickets will be issued by the Board of Management on application to Bro . J . M . McLeod , Secretary .

ALDERSGATE PAST OFFICERS' CLUB . —The monthly meeting was held at the Manchester Hotel last week . Bro . T . Briggs , Q . C ., president , occupied the chair , and tbere were present : Bros . Deputy Gooding , T . Murray Janes , W . T . Roberts , and J . Mayhew ( hon . secretary ) . It was settled that the summer outing should take place on Thursday , the 21 st prox ., at the Abercorn Arms , Stanmore , starting by coaches from the Manchester Hotel .

BRO . W . R . MABY , the eminent Bristol musician , who lately had the honour of being presented to her Majesty the Queen , completed his S 6 th anniversary on Wednesday last . Besides the best of all good wishes from many relatives , he was the recipient of hearty congratulations from numerous musical and Masonic friends . Some brethren of his lodge have just given our venerable brother a suit of Provincial Grand Lodge clothing , which they and we trust our venerable brother will live long to wear .

SOUTH AFRICAN SHARES . —During the past week interest in the South African market has centred almost entirely in Rhodesian shares , and there has been a rise in the price of nearly everything Rhodesian . Things are ripe for a boom in Rhodesian snares , and those in Dewar ' s Matabele Reefs , Limited , should be well worth the attention of the speculative investor who can afford to buy , pay for , and hold them . The totil capital of the company is only £ Go , ooo , in shares of £ \ each , of which 43 , 000 are issued and fully paidthe remaining 17 , 000 being working capital reserved for future issue if

, required . Dewar ' s Matabele Reefs , Limited , own 14 miles of gold reefs , containing 5 ioduly registered claims , equal to an area of about 1200 acres . A number of the claims contain ancient workings , and the whole of the reefs are fortunately situated within 15 miles of Bulawayo , in the best-known and most important gold-mining districts of Rhodesia . Careful surveys have been made of each of the reefs , and every claim has been registered and marked out in accordance with the British South Africa Company ' s regulations . Questions of title cannot , therefore , arise , and as the claims

themselves have in a great many instances been proved to be of a very high grade indeed , many elements of risk have been eliminated . The sale of one set of 20 claims will give enough to pay a sum , in the way of dividends , equivalent to the entire capital of the company . Probably in a few months , when the extent and richness of the property owned by Dewar ' s Matabele Reefs , Limited , are realised , and its value reckoned at a standard of price governing similar great land and exploring companies , this company ' s shares should be quoted at a far higher price than that of about L 1 each , at which they are now dealt in on the London Stock Exchange .

Homewood Crawford , who since the year 18 S 5 has held office as City Solicitor ; and Mr . John Watney , who for a long course of years has been the clerk of the Mercers' Company . In each case the honour is well bestowed . Bro . Crawford not only has served with

loyalty and ability the great municipal body whose office he is , but in various waysnotably by his membership of the late Unification Committee , and by the part he has played in unravelling crime—has rendered distinguised services to the community at large .
