The annual meeting of the Provincial Grand Lodge of Hertfordshire , which was originally fixed for July , but postponed in consequence of the General Election , will be held in the Town Hall , St . Albans , on Wednesday , the 13 th November . The business to be transacted is of the usual character , and the customary banquet will follow . #

* * We have to remind our readers that the annual meeting of the Provincial Grand Lodge of Northumberland will take place at the Grand Assembly Rooms , Newcastle-on-Tyne , on Wednesday next , the 30 th

instant . The gathering will be of exceptional importance , as it has been arranged that no less than three new lodges—the Temperance , Delavel , and Holmes , numbered 2557 , 2568 , and 2571 , respectively—shall be consecrated .

* * * Our esteemed contemporary , the Australasian Keystone , which is published in Melbourne , and is the

organ of the Craft in that colony , announces in its September issue that it has received the permission of the authorities of the United Grand Lodge of New South Wales to publish its proceedings , and editorially comment on such matters as are likely to prove of interest to the general body of Masons in New South Wales . * * *

We learn from the same source that a Masonic Ball , which was held in the Sydney Town Hall , on the 31 st July , in aid of the funds of the New South Wales Freemasons' Benevolent Institute , resulted in an augmentation of its resources to the extent of upwards of . £ 300 . It also states that the brethren in Newcastle

and East Maitland had organised similar fetes in behalf of the same Institute , the Newcastle Ball having been fixed for the 23 rd August . We trust we shall learn from a subsequent issue of the Australasian Keystone that these balls have been attended with results equally or even more beneficial .

* The Canadian Craftsman for last month contains reports of the 12 th annual conclave of the Sovereign Great Priory of the Order of the Temple in Canada , which was held in St . John ' s , New Brunswick , on the 23 rd August last , and of the annual convocation ofthe

Grand Council of Royal and Select Masters , which was held in the same city two days later . Sir Knight Sheppard , Supreme G . M „ presided at the former meeting , and in the course of his address expressed regret that the number of fratres present was not greater , and that the members ot the Scottish Encampments of St . John and St . Stephen had declined to unite with the

Canadian Templars . Warrants for two new Preceptories were ordered to be issued , and Grand Chancellor Sir Knight D . Spry reported a substantial increase of membership during the past year . The new Grand Master of the Order is Sir Knight William H . Whyte , of Montreal . * * *

The Australasian Keystone announces with deep regret the loss of a very distinguished member of the Craft in the Colony of New South Wales—Bro . Dr W . Gillett Sedgwick , upon whom at the constitution of the United Grand Lodge of New South Wales the rank of Past Grand Master was conferred . Our

deceased brother was initiated in Sydney under the Scottish Constitution in iS ( Si , and was installed W . M . two years later . In 1869-70 he was acting Prov . G . Master of New South Wales , and the following year received the appointment of Prov . Grand Master , the title of his office being changed in 18 S 0 to that of

Dist . Grand Master . He was also Grand Superintendent ( S . C . ) of Royal Arch Masonry in the colony , the local chief of the Red Cross and Order of the Temple , and one of the founders and first M . W . S . of the first and only Rose Croix Chapter ever established in the colony . Bro . Dr . Sedgwick had attained to a ripe age , having been born in 1810 . He was

educated at Christ ' s Hospital , and received his diploma as M . R . C . S . Eng . in 1844 . Ten years later he received a medical appointment in New Zealand , but he migrated thence to Sydney in 1856 , and continued in practice from that time forward till his death . He was highly esteemed and respected both by his brother Craftsmen and the general public . # * *

The Voice of Masonry for the current month contains the announcement of the death , at Fairfield , Connecticut , on the 30 th August , of Bro . General Ely S . Parker , a full-blooded Indian , who was born 75 years ago on the Towanda Reservation in New York ,

and was chief of the Seneca tribe and King oi the Six Nations . Bro . Gen . Parker served as Colonel on the staff of Gen . Grant during the war from 1862 till its close , when , in recognition of his services , he had conferred upon him the rank of Brigadier-General . * # #

The proceedings of the Grand Commandery of Maine for 18 95 are interesting , because of the attention paid to statistics . It is calculated that there are over 107 , 000 Knight Templars in America , though there are not more than 5000 or so elsewhere . The number of Templars in several Grand Commanderies

such as New York , Pennsylvania , Massachusetts , & c , is far in excess of the total membership in Europe , so popular is this Degree in the United States . The Master Masons number over 765 , 000 in North America . More than half the Royal Arch Masons in the " New

World" are Knight Templars , the percentage now of Knights to Craftsmen being about 14 , whereas 25 years ago it was but 5 per cent . Bros . Stephen Berry , J . H . Drummond , and E . P . Burnham form the Committee , and prepared this excellent report .
