they and others would be present from time to time at the meeting of the lodge . Bro . W . H . Rohrs , W . M . 94 G , was the first to reply , tendering the thanks of himself and brother visitors to the brethren of the lodge for their hospitality . Bro . IT . Stiles , W . M . 1732 , followed . He had visited the Royal Savoy Lodge on several occasions and had seen each of its Past Masters occupying the chair , the welcome accorded to visitors under the rule of each had

been most ccdial . There appeared to be one feeling entertained by all as regarded the guests . They each strived to outdo the other in the warmth of their reception ; and the invariable invitation was , " Come again , we are always pleased to see you . " Bro . Michael , W . M . 1107 , also spoke to the toast , as did Bros . Burgess , W . M . 1472 ; Mursell , W . M . 35 ; Garrod , W . M . 754 ; and others . The toast of "The Initiates" followed , each of the

newly-admitted brethren replying . Bro . Willing gave the next toast . As time was rather short , the W . M . had desired him to adopt a somewhat informal course , namely , to propose in one toast " Success to the Masonic Charities and the Masonic Press . " He looked upon these two institutions as two of the most important adjuncts to Freemasonry . In Bro . Mason , the representative of the Rcyal Masonic Benevolent Institution , they had a thorough supporter

of the Charities , and one who seemed to do everything it was possible for man to do to add to the success of the Institutions connected with the Craft . He ably represented Bro . Terry , the Secretary of the " Old Folks , " to whom the brethren of the Royal Savoy Lodge were under some amount of obligation , as he had at the time of the foundation of the lodge rendered great service by acting as its Consecrating Officer . His

absence on the present occasion was owing to his presence being required elsewhere , but he had sent a very good deputy , and one who couW speak to the toast with confidence . He thought the best recommendation he could give Bro . Mason personally was to say that he was a somewhat dangerous man to know , as he seemed to possess the knack of advocating the cause of his Institution so well as to compel brethren to support it . He had that

evening induced the Past Masters to promise that one of their number should act as Steward at the next festival of the Benevolent Institution , and it now only remained for the brethren to do their part to render Bro . Mason ' s work worthy of the reception it should receive . He could not omit to mention also that he had materially assisted the lodge that evening , by acting first in one capacity and then in another , at the earlier part of the evening . As a representative of the other toast he was glad to again

welcome Bro . Morgan , jun ., and he hoped that at many future meetings of the lodge the two brethren would be again present . Bro . Mason and Morgan having replied , the W . M . proposed "The Officers of the Lodge , " and each of those brethren having spoken , the Tyler was called and the concluding toast honoured . The Past Master's jewel presented to Bro . Clemow bore the following inscription : " Presented to Bro . F . IT . Clemow , P . M ., by the Savoy Lodge , No . 1 744 , as a mark of esteem and in recognition of his valuable services as W . M . 1 SS 0-S 1 . "

previous meeting had been , read and confirmed , Bro . Lightfoot , W . M ., said that at the last meeting he had the pleasure of presenting a pair of ivory gavels for the Senior and Junior Warden ' s pedestals , and he had now the pleasure of presenting a pair of wands . The Masters ' s gavel having met with an accident at the last meeting , he had had that repaired and mounted in silver at his own expense , and he hoped to the satisfaction of the brethren . A vote of thanks was ordered to be recorded on the minutes

for the very valuable presents . Bro . J . B . Manningham being desirous of going forward , having given proofs of his proficiency , was pasSfcd to the Degree of F . C . by the W . M . in a very effective manner . Aiter the transaction of the usual routine business the lodge was closed , anil the brethren adjourned to the banquet room , where a couple of very pleasant hours were spent , the evening being enlivened by the admirable singing of Bro . Webster Williams and the humorous recitations of Bro . Bramall , both being from Liverpool .

CHESTER . —Lodge of Independence ( No . 721 ) . —This lodge held its usual monthly meeting in the newly decorated lodge-room , 27 , Eastgate-row , on the 14 th inst . A large number of the members were present , and in addition there were present the Worshipful Master of the Cestrian Lodge , 425 , and his Junior Warden , Bro . Duncan , with other visitors . The business of the eveninf

consisted of a First and Second Degree . 1 he former was worked in its usual form by the W . M . The candidate was then examined by the W . M . and having proved his efficiency retired . The W . M . then vacated " in favour of Past Master H . P . Swindelles , who passed the candidate to the Second Degree , afterwards delivering the lecture on the tracing board in his old careful and impressive manner ,

affording thereby both instruction and a large amount of pleasure to the brethren and apparently to the candidate . The lodge was then closed . 'The Worshipful Master said he had a most sad and melancholy duty to perform that evening , that was to announce to them the death since last lodge of two old members of the lodge . The first in order of dates was Bro . Joseph Wildig , whose genial face they

would well remember , until he was attacked with paralysis , since which time and unto his death he had been confined to his house ( now nearly four years . ) The other sad loss they had sustained was that of their worthy Treasurer , Bro . Tom J . Mason . Bro . Mason was a member of the City Council and a solicitor in very good practice , with his time fully occupied , and yet he

found time to be with us at most of our meetings . His loss was a specially sad one , as he had died far away from his home , and , as might be said , in harness . He had been deputed to attend , with the Duke TSf Westminster and some members of the City Council , on Mr . Dodson on the subject of the River Dee pollutions , but was taken ill of . rheumatic gout , and

gradually sunk and died at Ridley's Hotel , in London . Both of the late brethren left large families , but it was hoped in both cases they were in positions to support themselves . It was proposed and unanimously carried that letters of condolence be sent in both cases to the bereaved families of the late brethren . The W . M . said that he should be glad to see as many of the brethren as possible at eleven o'clock a . m ., on Wednesday morning to attend at Bro . Mason's

funeral , and pay the last sad office of respect to departed merit . The W . M . then said that in consequence of these sad circumstances they had decided not to have the usual banquet that evening , but he trusted they should have the company of all their visitors at the December meeting , when they hoped to have a more enjoyable meeting than this had been . The lodge was then closed in the usual solemn form and-adjourried .
