Edinburgh Philosophical Institution , before whom he lectured on the stage on its opening night of the session . Wo are g lad to hear that Bro . Alderman Knight has so far recovered from his recent serious illness , acquired whilst on a visit to the United States , as to be able to go to the seaside , and is now pronounced convalescent . The Provincial Grand Chapter of Middlesex will be held on Wednesday next , the 30 th inst ., at the Grotto Hotel , 'Twickenham . 'The esteemed Grand Superintendent , who has just returned from Derbyshire , will , as usual , preside on the occasion . Bro . H . R . H . the Duke of Connaught dined with the Benchers of Grays Inn , on the "Grand day " ( Tuesday last ) , of Michaelmas Term , in Gray ' s Inn Hall .

Bro . Sir P . Cunliffe Owen was one of the speakers at the annual meeting of the Leek School of Art , and announced that Mr . J . Nicholson , silk manufacturer , intended to erect a library and museum , to cost £ 10 , 000 . Bro . Dresser Rogers ' s , C . C ., house at Peckham is about to be converted into a Conservative Club .

The quarterly meeting of the York College of Rosicrucians will be held at York' this afternoon , when a paper will be read by one of the members on a " Few Notes of a Tour by a Freemason in Egypt . " We notice that this college is drawing to itself many of the most intelligent brethren in the North of England , and this is scarcely to be wondered at since its gatherings are always marked by the

reading of one or more papers of sterling interest . Bro . Edward Bacon , army schoolmaster , doing duty with the Royal Artillery at Shoeburyness , and I . P . M . of the Gibraltar Lodge of Mark Master Masons , No . 43 , was last week presented with a handsome P . M . jewel , purchased b y means of a private subscription among the members of the lodge . Owing to Bro . Bacon ' s recent removal

from the Rock , the presentation was made privately by Bro . Broster White , the W . M . for the ensuing year , and ju :-t now en route to Dublin . The jewel bears the following inscription : — " Presented to Bro . E . Bacon , I . P . M ., by the members of Mark Lodge No . 43 , as a slight recognition of his untiring zeal in Mark Masonry , June 1 SS 1 . " It maybe noted that Bro . Bacon ' s year of office was remarkable

for the large number of brethren advanced , for the perfect and singularl y effective working of his officers , and for the safe mooring to " 43 , " after hard struggles , of an ark called the CocUburn Lodge of Royal Ark Mariners . It is a matter of extreme regret that Lodge No . 43 has lost also the services of its present excellent W . M ,, who will , we are sure , make as distinguished a mark in Dublin as he did at Gibraltar .

Bro . H . R . H . Prince Leopold , Duke of Albany , who has lately been spending a good deal of bis time on the Continent , has just been betrothed to the Princess Hc'lene de Waldeck , younger sister of the Queen of the Netherlands , a niece of the Queen of Sweden . Bro . the Duke of Albany was born April , 1 S 53 .

Bros . Alderman Ellis , and Lord Mayor and Alderman and Sheriff Hanson took part , on Saturday last , at the Costal Palace , at the distribution of prizes to the successful competitors of the London Rifle Brigade . Bro . Sheriff Hanson expressed his pleasure at being asked to take part , having been connected with the corps for many years .

Captain the Earl of Waldegrave took the gold badge of the year , among other prizes , for shooting . Bro . the Rev . Dr . P . H . Ernest Brelte , 31 ° was installed M . W . S . of the Palestine Rose Croix Chapter , by Bro . Colonel Shadwell Henry Clerke , 33 , on Tuesday the 22 nd inst .

Bro . Sims ' s comedy , " The Member for Slocum ,- " was played on Wednesday , the 23 rd inst ., at the Gaiety afternoon performance . Bro . Alderman NJottage , who was taken ill ' at the Guildhall on Lord Mayor's Day , and had to leave before the company broke up , is , we are glad to state , now out of danger . He has been attended by two physicians for congestion cf the lungs and liver .

At the meeting of the Israel Lodge , 205 , it was resolved to present to Bro . H . R . H . the Duke of Albany , Past Grand Warden , & c , a congratulatory address , handsomely engrossed on vellum , upon his approaching wedding to H . R . H . the Princess HoTene of Waldeck .

ihe funeral of Bro . lom J . Mason , Treasurer of the Lodge of Independence , 721 , Chester , took place on the iGth inst ., when the brethren of the lodge , to the number of between forty and fifty , assembled in front of the Town Hall , and , on the mournful procession reaching that spot , they took their places at the head of the line , and led it through the city to the cemetery , where the members of

the City Council and the Law Association had already formed on both sides of the path leading to the cemetery chapel . The Masons marching through this line , formed open column at the chapel doors , and after the remains of the late brother and the mourners had entered the brethren followed , and listened to the first part of the mournful ceremony . 'They then formed line again , and followed the

coffin to the grave , where the remainder of the service > vas most impressively read by Canon Grantham . This being over , the brethren forming round the last receptacle of their departed brother , cast their emblematic sprigs of . acacia on to his coffin . It had been arranged that the W . M . should deliver a short oration over the grave , but the wind was piercing cold , so it was omitted , and the brethren dispersed .

The vacancy in the commission of Lieutenancy of the City , caused by the death of Bro . Sir W . A . Rose , will be filled up in January . Bro . Alderman Knight presided on Tuesday last at a meeting of the City of London Fire Assurance Company . Bro . Alderman Sheriff Hanson has become a Vice-President of the City Church annd Churchyard

Protection Society . Bro . Edgar Atwflbd , Past Prov . Grand Sword Bearer South Wales ( VV . Division ) , will be installed W . M . of the Aberystwyth Lodge , No . 1072 , by Bro . G . T . Smith , P . At the installation meeting of the Clapham Lodge , No . 1 S 1 S , at the Grosvenor Hotel , Belgravia , on Wednesday last , Bro . William C . Hale was installed Worshipful Master by Bro . Louis Hirsch , P . M . A report will appear in our next . The Covent Garden Lodge of Instruction will in future meet at The Constitution , Bedford-street ,

Coventgarden , at 7 . 45 p . m . The remains of the late Bro . T . E . Purd y were on Monday , the 14 th inst ., conveyed to their final resting-place , Abney Park Cemetery . Bro . Purdy was one of the sub-inspectors of the New River Company , which ofiice he has held for many years , succeeding his father . His district included Shoreditch , St . Luke's , and part of

CTerkenwell . He was one of the oldest and certainly one of the most respected of the Company ' s officers . He died after about five days' illness from inflammation and pleurisy . A great number of his friends attended his funeral , including Mr . Kershaw , Mr . Page , and many other officers of the New River Company , the Vestry Clerks , Surveyors , and other

officers of Shoreditch , St . Luke's , Clerkemvell , and Bethnal Green , and by a large number of his personal friends , but more particularly by about forty members of the Finsbury Lodge , No . SGi , of which his father was one of the principal founders and of which the deceased was a P . M ., having also for many years filled the ofiice of Hon '

Secretary . Upon the coffin being lowered into the grave , a number of beautiful wreaths were deposited . Bro . Purdy was not only highly respected for his qualities as a public officer , but equally so for his goodness and charity in a private sense . It is rare to find by the side of the grave so many testimonies of esteem , and certainly none more deservedly bestowed .

Great success has attended the working of the Guardsman Coffee Tavern in London , and , after paying all expenses , a surplus remains for the central council to devote to the establishment of similar taverns in other garrisons . The new Army Coffee Tavern at Sandgate will be opened on the 2 nd prox . The Secretary of State

for War has granted a site for a coffee tavern on the Lynchford-road , Aldershot , and the council have ordered its immediate erection . J . 'E . The quarterly meeting of the York College of Rosicrucians will be held at York' this afternoon , when a paper will be read by one of the members on a " Few Notes of a Tour by a Freemason in Egypt . " We notice that this college is drawing to itself many of the most intelligent brethren in the North of England , and this is scarcely to be wondered at since its gatherings are always marked by the

reading of one or more papers of sterling interest . Bro . Edward Bacon , army schoolmaster , doing duty with the Royal Artillery at Shoeburyness , and I . P . M . of the Gibraltar Lodge of Mark Master Masons , No . 43 , was last week presented with a handsome P . M . jewel , purchased b y means of a private subscription among the members of the lodge . Owing to Bro . Bacon ' s recent removal

from the Rock , the presentation was made privately by Bro . Broster White , the W . M . for the ensuing year , and ju :-t now en route to Dublin . The jewel bears the following inscription : — " Presented to Bro . E . Bacon , I . P . M ., by the members of Mark Lodge No . 43 , as a slight recognition of his untiring zeal in Mark Masonry , June 1 SS 1 . " It maybe noted that Bro . Bacon ' s year of office was remarkable

for the large number of brethren advanced , for the perfect and singularl y effective working of his officers , and for the safe mooring to " 43 , " after hard struggles , of an ark called the CocUburn Lodge of Royal Ark Mariners . It is a matter of extreme regret that Lodge No . 43 has lost also the services of its present excellent W . M ,, who will , we are sure , make as distinguished a mark in Dublin as he did at Gibraltar .

Bro . H . R . H . Prince Leopold , Duke of Albany , who has lately been spending a good deal of bis time on the Continent , has just been betrothed to the Princess Hc'lene de Waldeck , younger sister of the Queen of the Netherlands , a niece of the Queen of Sweden . Bro . the Duke of Albany was born April , 1 S 53 .

Bros . Alderman Ellis , and Lord Mayor and Alderman and Sheriff Hanson took part , on Saturday last , at the Costal Palace , at the distribution of prizes to the successful competitors of the London Rifle Brigade . Bro . Sheriff Hanson expressed his pleasure at being asked to take part , having been connected with the corps for many years .

Captain the Earl of Waldegrave took the gold badge of the year , among other prizes , for shooting . Bro . the Rev . Dr . P . H . Ernest Brelte , 31 ° was installed M . W . S . of the Palestine Rose Croix Chapter , by Bro . Colonel Shadwell Henry Clerke , 33 , on Tuesday the 22 nd inst .

Bro . Sims ' s comedy , " The Member for Slocum ,- " was played on Wednesday , the 23 rd inst ., at the Gaiety afternoon performance . Bro . Alderman NJottage , who was taken ill ' at the Guildhall on Lord Mayor's Day , and had to leave before the company broke up , is , we are glad to state , now out of danger . He has been attended by two physicians for congestion cf the lungs and liver .

At the meeting of the Israel Lodge , 205 , it was resolved to present to Bro . H . R . H . the Duke of Albany , Past Grand Warden , & c , a congratulatory address , handsomely engrossed on vellum , upon his approaching wedding to H . R . H . the Princess HoTene of Waldeck .

ihe funeral of Bro . lom J . Mason , Treasurer of the Lodge of Independence , 721 , Chester , took place on the iGth inst ., when the brethren of the lodge , to the number of between forty and fifty , assembled in front of the Town Hall , and , on the mournful procession reaching that spot , they took their places at the head of the line , and led it through the city to the cemetery , where the members of

the City Council and the Law Association had already formed on both sides of the path leading to the cemetery chapel . The Masons marching through this line , formed open column at the chapel doors , and after the remains of the late brother and the mourners had entered the brethren followed , and listened to the first part of the mournful ceremony . 'They then formed line again , and followed the

coffin to the grave , where the remainder of the service > vas most impressively read by Canon Grantham . This being over , the brethren forming round the last receptacle of their departed brother , cast their emblematic sprigs of . acacia on to his coffin . It had been arranged that the W . M . should deliver a short oration over the grave , but the wind was piercing cold , so it was omitted , and the brethren dispersed .

The vacancy in the commission of Lieutenancy of the City , caused by the death of Bro . Sir W . A . Rose , will be filled up in January . Bro . Alderman Knight presided on Tuesday last at a meeting of the City of London Fire Assurance Company . Bro . Alderman Sheriff Hanson has become a Vice-President of the City Church annd Churchyard

Coventgarden , at 7 . 45 p . m . The remains of the late Bro . T . E . Purd y were on Monday , the 14 th inst ., conveyed to their final resting-place , Abney Park Cemetery . Bro . Purdy was one of the sub-inspectors of the New River Company , which ofiice he has held for many years , succeeding his father . His district included Shoreditch , St . Luke's , and part of

CTerkenwell . He was one of the oldest and certainly one of the most respected of the Company ' s officers . He died after about five days' illness from inflammation and pleurisy . A great number of his friends attended his funeral , including Mr . Kershaw , Mr . Page , and many other officers of the New River Company , the Vestry Clerks , Surveyors , and other

officers of Shoreditch , St . Luke's , Clerkemvell , and Bethnal Green , and by a large number of his personal friends , but more particularly by about forty members of the Finsbury Lodge , No . SGi , of which his father was one of the principal founders and of which the deceased was a P . M ., having also for many years filled the ofiice of Hon '

Secretary . Upon the coffin being lowered into the grave , a number of beautiful wreaths were deposited . Bro . Purdy was not only highly respected for his qualities as a public officer , but equally so for his goodness and charity in a private sense . It is rare to find by the side of the grave so many testimonies of esteem , and certainly none more deservedly bestowed .

Great success has attended the working of the Guardsman Coffee Tavern in London , and , after paying all expenses , a surplus remains for the central council to devote to the establishment of similar taverns in other garrisons . The new Army Coffee Tavern at Sandgate will be opened on the 2 nd prox . The Secretary of State

for War has granted a site for a coffee tavern on the Lynchford-road , Aldershot , and the council have ordered its immediate erection . J . 'E .
