The Hundred of Elloe Lodge , No . 469 , at its regular meeting on Thursday , the 12 th inst ., at the Masonic Hall , Spalding , Lincolnshire , gave a warm reception to Bro . James Stevens , P . M ., of London , on the occasion of his attending to lecture on " The Ritual and

Ceremonial of the Symbolic Degrees in Freemasonry . " There was a large gathering of members and visitors , amongst whom were Bros . H . H . Harvey , W . M . ; W . Fletcher , S . W . ; J . E . Alves , 43 8 . mth r After the minutes of the previous meeting had he confirmed , the WORSHIPFUL MASTER stated that he hall the great pleasure of introducing to the brethren a well known London brother , whose great services to the Craf f

in connection with the perfection of ritual work i Freemasonry were deservedly becoming recognised The tongue of good report had reached their lodge and he believed that the valuable instruction which Bro ' Stevens was able to impart would be highly appreciated ' by them , and conduce to their further advancement in Alasonic work .

Bro . STEVENS , after thankingthe W . M . for his kindly observations , then commenced an extempore address which held the brethren closely interested during two full hours . The several portions of the ritual were explained in a manner entirely differing from the stereotyped instruction in common use amongst the Craft , and symbols , of the true meaning of which the

majority of his hearers had previously no conception were interpreted so as to convey a much more correct impression of their value and importance in Masonic ceremonial than they ( his hearers ) had hitherto entertained . Frequent commendation testified to the in . struction and entertainment afforded , and it appears to us a great pity that well-understood circumstances

prevent the possibility of such an address being made known more generally through the medium of the press . That , however , as the lecturer himself stated can never be the esoteric character of his work necessitating the services of the " outer guard" on all occasions of its delivery . But every member of the Craft should strive to hear what Bro . Stevens so

admirably expounds . At the conclusion of this most interesting lecture the following resolution , proposed by the W . M ., was passed with acclamation : " That a hearty vote of thanks be recorded for the very interesting and instructive lecture given by Bro . lames Stevens , " and

the hope expressed that at some not very distant date he would be able to again visit the lodge , and further explain the Masonic ritual and ceremonial . The lodge was then closed , and the brethren proceeded to the dining hall , where a plentiful repast awaited their attention .

The usual Masonic toasts were honoured , and the visitors experienced a welcome which they fully appreciated . Harmony prevailed ; the lecturer added still more to his popularity by effectively rendering two of his well known Masonic recitations , and altogether the proceedings , both at " work and refreshment , " made the evening notable in the annals of the Hundred of Elloe Lodge .
