The representation promises to be a very brilliant one .

THK BAPTISM of the infant son of Bro . the Duke and Duchess of Marlborough took place on Monday afternoon in the Chapel Royal , St , James's Palacc . _ The chancel vvas beautifully decorated with flowers for the occasion . The sponsors included the Marquis Camden , the Marquis of Londonderry , and Mrs . Vanderbilt , who vvas represented by the Marchioness of Blandford , and Bro . the Duke and Duchess vvere among the members of the family present . The child received the names of Ivor Charles .

THE REV . R . H . HADDEN vvas instituted on Monday by the Bshop of London to the living of St . Mark's , North Audley-street . On Sunday next the new vicar will ** read himself in , " and on the following Sunday morning will hold his opening service . Mr . Hadden will be much missed in the City , where he has nrnistered for nearly 20 years , being for a considerable time curate to and intimate friend of the late Prebendiry Rogers , whose biography he edited . Ever since he vvas President of the Oxford Union Society Mr . Haddcn ' s individuality has made him welcome everywhere .

HER MAJESTY is again conferring a unique distinction upon the Middlesex Needlework Guild , by placing at the disposal of its President , the Duchess of Albany , a suite of rooms at St . James ' s Palace in vvhich to hold the annual display of the clothing contributed by its members for distribution among the poor . It is the fifth year that this notable privilege has been permitted , and hitherto the stately banqueting chamber , vvith

its stirring battle pictures , has been filled with the huge stacks of garments . The exhibition , which will be arranged under the direction of the Duchess of Albany , will be held on the 29 th and 30 th instant , between the hours of 11 . 30 a . m . and . five p . m ., and visitors will be admitted on presentation of their cards to the police officer on duty at the door , or by signing their names and addresses in a book .

THE CHARITIES COMMITTEE of the Provi nee of Durham intend to hold a festival during the spring of 180 , 9 , in aid ofthe F . ducation Fund and the Hudson Benevolent Fund , the object being to obtain a sum sufficient to raise the Education Fund to £ 3000 invested , the balance to the Hudson Benevolent Fund . At the mee ing of the Provincial Grand Lodge at Barnard Castle the proposed feslival received a hearty approval , a sum

of 200 guineas being voted towards it , supplemented by a sum of 50 guineas from the Provincial Grand Master , and 25 guineas from Provincial Grand Chapter . Thc actual sum it is desired to raise is about £ 20 : 0 . The matter is being heartily suppor ' ed by membets of the Craft , many of whom are taking up the office of Festival Steward-. The banquet will in all probability be held in the Castle Mill , Durhim , during the Easter vacation .

THE MANSION HOUSE FIND for the relief of the distress in the West Indies amounted to , £ 43 , 600 on Thursday evening .

BRO . THE DUKE AND DUCHESS OF DEVONSHIRE left Chatsworth on Monday for London . There will be theatrical performances at Chatsworth on January 5 th and Gth , and a ball on January 12 th . BRO . LORD KITCHENER OF KHARTOUM went to Windsor on Saturday last as the guest of Ptince and Princess Christian cf Schleswig-Holstein atj Cumberland Lodge . His lordship returned to town on Monday .

ON TUESDAY Mrs . Keeley celebrated her 93 rd birthday . At her home in Pelhamcrescent she received the congratulations of a considerable gathering of intimate friends , vvho brought suilable offerings of ( lowers and numerous tokens of affectionate remembrance . THE DUKE OF CAMBRIDGE will open the Victorhn Hospital , Kingston-on-Thames , on Monday , the 12 th prox . Major-General Lord Kitchener arrived at the Castle , and vvas introduced to her Majesty ' s presence by the Lord in Waiting , and the Oueen invested him vvith the Order of the Grand Cross of the Bath . ~ THE GRAND DUKE AND GRAND DUCHESS SERGE OF RUSSIA have concluded theirjvisit to the Queen . Their Imperial Highnesses left the Castle shortly after 10 o ' clock on Wednesday morning , and travelled by special train over the London and South-Western and Chatham and Dover Railways to Dover Admiralty Pier , whence they prcceeded to the Continent .

THE DUKE OF CAMBRIDGE has accepted an invitation to dine at the hall of the Middle Temple on Wednesday , the 14 th prox . ( the date having been altered from Friday , the gth ) , vvhen the Treasurer and Binchers will entertain the ollicers and members of the Inns of Court Rill : s . The corps has during the Volunteer year just ended considerably increased its previous totals of enrolled nun and efficients .

BRO . EARL CARRINGTON presided on Monday over one of the most interesting of the series of free lectures now being given at the Imperial Insti ' ute . It was delivered by Mr . F . Lambert , on the subject of the marvellous stalactite caves of New South VVales . With the aid of a very perfect set of lantern slides the lecturer was enabled to give a large audience a vivid appreciation of the beauties and wonders of these tremendous caves .

LEEDS FESTIVAL . —At the final meeting of the committee of the Leeds Musical Festival , held in the Lord Mayor ' s room at Leeds on Tui s lay , the report and balance-she , t vvas submitted and approved of . The total income from the festival was £ 11 , 490 , the largest amount ever received , and there vvas a balance of £ 2138 for distributionjamongst the medical charities . A sum was also set aside for the formation of a permanent orchestra in Leeds .

THE QUEEN was deeply grieved to receive the sad intelligence on Saturday last of the death of Bro . the Earl of Lathom , Lord Chamberlain to the Queen . He had held that high and responsible office on three different occasions for 11 years , and had previously served her Majesty as Lord in Waiting and Captain of the Yeomen of the Guard . He was greatly respected and liked by her Majesty and the Royal Family , who lose a faithful and trusted friend in him .

THE LORD LIEUTENANT OF IRELAND and Countess Cadogan arrived at the Viceregal Lodge , Dublin , on Tuesday morning , from England . In the afternoon his Excellency prcceeded to Baron's Court , as the guest of Bro . the Duke of Abercorn . His lordship vvas escorted from the Viceregal Lodge to the station b y a full mounted troop . On Thursday his Excellency travelled by special train from Newtown Stewart to Londonderry for the purpose of unveiling a statue of the Oaeen in the Guildhall .

EARL AND COUNTESS HOWE have been entertaining a large house party at their Buckinghamshire residence , Penn House , Amersham , on the occasion of the visit of the Duke and Duchess of York , vvho arrived late on Monday night . Amongst the other guests are Bro . the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire , Viscount and Viscountess Chelsea , Lord and Lady Farquhar , Viscount and Viscountess Curzon , Sir Edward Sassoon , the Portuguese Minister , and others .

THE TREASURER , Lord Davey , and the Benchers of Lincoln ' s Inn entertained at dinner on Tuesday evening , being Grand Day of Michaelmis Term , the Lord Chancellor ( Bro . the Earl of Halsbury ) , the Speaker ( Bro . THE SIRDAR has veiy kindly contributed to the special exhibition of relics of the Battle of Omdurman , at the Museum of the Royal United Service Institution in Whitehall . The officers of the 21 st Lancers , the 37 th Field Battery Royal Artil ' er / , the 1 st Battalion Grenadier Guards , and the ist Battalion Seaforth Highlanders have also given their assistance , with the result that a most interesting and extensive display of relics ot the recent campaign in the Soudan are now exhibited for the first time . The last exhibition associated with the campaign in the Soudin vvas that of the Gordon relics , which were lent by the officers of the Royal Engineers to the same Institution .

NATIONAL TOAST . — " Here's to John Bull , Pat and Sandy in Grant ' s Morella Cherry Brandy , " acknowledged by all to be delicious and comforting ; and well calculated by its soothing properties to make all parties vvork together for the benefit of the nation . UNDER ORDINARY circumstances the fact that the three leading ladies papers had each an article last week on the beauty of crape and the circumstances of its being

the fashionable material for mourning vvould strike one as strange . The explanation , however , is not far to seek . When H . R . H . the Princess of Wales recentl y returned from Denmark she vvas noticed to be wearing quite an unusual amountof crap ; for the loss of the mother she so deeply mourns . As her Royal Highness is regarded as the leader of fashion in this country , the simultaneous appearance of the three articles referred to is only natural .

Their Imperial Highnesses left the Castle shortly after 10 o ' clock on Wednesday morning , and travelled by special train over the London and South-Western and Chatham and Dover Railways to Dover Admiralty Pier , whence they prcceeded to the Continent .

THE DUKE OF CAMBRIDGE has accepted an invitation to dine at the hall of the Middle Temple on Wednesday , the 14 th prox . ( the date having been altered from Friday , the gth ) , vvhen the Treasurer and Binchers will entertain the ollicers and members of the Inns of Court Rill : s . The corps has during the Volunteer year just ended considerably increased its previous totals of enrolled nun and efficients .

BRO . EARL CARRINGTON presided on Monday over one of the most interesting of the series of free lectures now being given at the Imperial Insti ' ute . It was delivered by Mr . F . Lambert , on the subject of the marvellous stalactite caves of New South VVales . With the aid of a very perfect set of lantern slides the lecturer was enabled to give a large audience a vivid appreciation of the beauties and wonders of these tremendous caves .

LEEDS FESTIVAL . —At the final meeting of the committee of the Leeds Musical Festival , held in the Lord Mayor ' s room at Leeds on Tui s lay , the report and balance-she , t vvas submitted and approved of . The total income from the festival was £ 11 , 490 , the largest amount ever received , and there vvas a balance of £ 2138 for distributionjamongst the medical charities . A sum was also set aside for the formation of a permanent orchestra in Leeds .

THE QUEEN was deeply grieved to receive the sad intelligence on Saturday last of the death of Bro . the Earl of Lathom , Lord Chamberlain to the Queen . He had held that high and responsible office on three different occasions for 11 years , and had previously served her Majesty as Lord in Waiting and Captain of the Yeomen of the Guard . He was greatly respected and liked by her Majesty and the Royal Family , who lose a faithful and trusted friend in him .

THE LORD LIEUTENANT OF IRELAND and Countess Cadogan arrived at the Viceregal Lodge , Dublin , on Tuesday morning , from England . In the afternoon his Excellency prcceeded to Baron's Court , as the guest of Bro . the Duke of Abercorn . His lordship vvas escorted from the Viceregal Lodge to the station b y a full mounted troop . On Thursday his Excellency travelled by special train from Newtown Stewart to Londonderry for the purpose of unveiling a statue of the Oaeen in the Guildhall .

EARL AND COUNTESS HOWE have been entertaining a large house party at their Buckinghamshire residence , Penn House , Amersham , on the occasion of the visit of the Duke and Duchess of York , vvho arrived late on Monday night . Amongst the other guests are Bro . the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire , Viscount and Viscountess Chelsea , Lord and Lady Farquhar , Viscount and Viscountess Curzon , Sir Edward Sassoon , the Portuguese Minister , and others .

A considerable number of the Benchers were present , among them being the Lord Chief Justice ( Lord Russell of Killowen ) , Lord Hobhouse , Lord Grimthorpe , Lord Macnaghten , and Lord Justice Chitty .

THE SIRDAR has veiy kindly contributed to the special exhibition of relics of the Battle of Omdurman , at the Museum of the Royal United Service Institution in Whitehall . The officers of the 21 st Lancers , the 37 th Field Battery Royal Artil ' er / , the 1 st Battalion Grenadier Guards , and the ist Battalion Seaforth Highlanders have also given their assistance , with the result that a most interesting and extensive display of relics ot the recent campaign in the Soudan are now exhibited for the first time . The last exhibition associated with the campaign in the Soudin vvas that of the Gordon relics , which were lent by the officers of the Royal Engineers to the same Institution .
