SPALDING . —Hundred of Elloe ( No . 469 ) . — The annual installation meeting took place on Thursday afternoon , the nth inst ., at the Alasonic Hall , when Bro . Edmund Cammack was duly installed as W . AL by Bros . A . Woodrow , P . AI ., P . P . G . J . D ., and Geo . F . Barrell , P . AL , P . P . G . A . D . of C . There was a goodly assemblage of brethren , and the
visitors included Bros . Rev . J . A . Chalmers , W . AL 1304 ; Tollond , VV . AI . 1385 ; Rev . B . Alathews , GS 3 ; Capt . Walter ( of the Black Watch ) , 9 S 3 ; J . H . Carter , S . W . ; T . VV . Curtis , P . M . ; Sawyer , J . VV . ; " and Scott , Organist of 9 S 5 . The ceremony was most impressively rendered by Bros . Woodrow and Barrell , whose excellent working is so well
known in this province , the splendid musical accompaniment of Bro . Scott contributing no little to the effectiveness of the proceedings . Following the work of the lodge a very sumptuous banquet provided by Bro . Harper of the VVhite Hart Hotel , was furnished in the ante-room of the lodge , and after full justice had been done to the recherche spread thc W . AL
gave the usual loyal and masonic toasts , especially alluding to the interest evinced by H . R . H . the Grand Alaster in evrything concerning Freemasonry , and of the sacrifices he makes in order to fulfil the duties of the arduous office he holds . In proposing the P . G . M . and his officers the W . AL remarked that scarce as is the purple in so large a province many of the officers of this lodge have the privilege and
honour of wqaring it , a fact which speaks volumes for the credit of thelodge . Bro . Alfred Harrison , LP . AL , P . G . S . of Works , responded , and considered that in the R . W . P . G . A 1 . they had the right man in the right place . To know him was to love and respect him highly . Bro . Jas . Robinson , P . M ., P . P . G . J . D ., proposed "The
VV . AI . " and wished him a prosperous year . The VV . M . was well qualified for the position to which he had been elected , and was held in general esteem . He had not expected to be called on and therefore was not prepared to make a speech . The Worshipful Alaster in reply said that during his period of subordinate office the lodge had more than
maintained its position . He hoped that the present year would be not less successful . He thanked them for putting him in the chair , and would do his best for the interests of the lodge and of the craft . He had not much to fear for the result with such an excellent coach and Secretary as Bro . Barrell , and the other officers that had consented to assist him .
Bro . Woodward , P . AL , P . P . G . J . D ., in proposing "The Installing Officers " thought that although he had many times seen the ceremony of installation he had never seen it to such perfection as that day . Their rites , like many a sermon , became effective and interesting by the charm of earnest oratory . When thc charges were delivered they quite thrilled him , and doubtless had the same effect on
others . T hese charges reminded him that Alasonry is a living reality , and its aim the promotion of every laudable purpose . They caused each to ask himself what he had done and what his lodge had done during the past year to extend the principles and to fulfil the aim of their institution , and to what extent they had been true to the solemn obligation each of them had taken to manifest irood and
brotherlv feeling to aU with whom they were associated . Bro . Woodrow , P . AL , P . P . G . J . D ., thanked the brethren , and expressed the gratification it gave him to install so worthy a man as Bro . Cammack . Bro . Barrell , P . ifL , P . P . G . A . D . of C , intimated that although during thepast twelvemonths he had officiatedatsix installations none had given him more pleasure than that of
to-day . Bro . Carter , S . VV . 9 S 5 , proposed "The Masonic Charities " and said that although not as familiar with the charitable organisations as he intended to be in the future yet he thought that they not only needed to be supported by the contributions of the brethren but also to be protected by them better than they sometimes had been . Alasonry is becoming too cheap . Lodges should exercise
more care as to thc admission of candidates ; persons might be attracted towards them mainly on account of their Charities . He did not say admit none but men of means , but he did think they should be careful to admit only men of character . Bro . Barrell responded and remarked that the Charities are one of the backbones of the Craft . Immense sums
are annually expended by means of the Alasonic Charities as well as by those funds more especially intended to enable deserving Alasons to help themselves . The three great Charities—the Boys' School , the Girls' School , and the Benevolent Institution—had during the past year disbursed but a trifle short of £ 50 , 000 . They in that lodge knew practically some of the benefits that accrued
from their charitable organisations , and he could assure them from his own knowledge that every case receives the most searching investigation . He explained that they had recently added greatly to the voting power of the lodge , which would in future add materially to the support of
deserving cases in the province . Bro . Simpson proposed "The Past Masters and the Officers . " Bro . A . Harrison , l . P . AL , responded . He looked on Freemasonry as closely connected with religion , as it constantly reminded them of the great God himself , the Great

AL , the ceremony being performed by the Deputy Prov . Grand Master of Somerset , Bro . Else . The VV . AI . afterwards appointed his officers as follows : Bros . E . Howell , LP . AL ; VV . J .
