F . Tomkins , 860 , and it proved to be unanimous . The
latter being in attendance was duly exalted . Comps . Rest , Kimpton , and E . A . Harris were respectively installed as M . E . Z ., H ., and J ., by Comp . Davis , assisted by Comp . Cleghorne . Among the officers invested were Comps . G . Davis , S . E . ; Hardy , S . N . ; Harfeld , Treas . ; Salemann , P . S . ; and Mallett , Janitor . A Past Principal ' s
jewel was presented to Comp . Cleghorne , and votes of thanks passed to the Installing Officers . The chapter having been closed , the companions adjourned to the banquet . The customary toasts followed . An excellent programme of music was furnished by Comp . Kift .
PLUMSTEAD . —Pattison Chapter ( No . 913 ) . —The election meeting of the above powerful chapter took place on Thursday , the iSth inst ., at the Masonic Hall , Bull Fields , Comps . R . J . Cook presiding , as Z . ; J . H . Roberts , H . ; and E . Palmer , J . The chapter having been opened , and the minutes of the previous convocation confirmed , the ballot was taken for Bro . Sidney
Horton , 153 6 , and , proving unanimous , that brother was exalted , the long and impressive ceremony being faultlessly worked by the M . E . Z . and his Principals , Comp . Lawson performing the arduous duty of P . S . admirably . The following companions were then elected as Principals and officers for the ensuing year : Comps . Roberts , Z . ; Palmer , H . ; S . Clarke , J . ; H . J . Butter , P . Z ., P . P . G . P . S ., S . E . ;
C . H . Lawson , S . N . ; A . Penfold , P . Z ., P . P . G . ist A . Soj , Treas . ; E . Morris , P . S . ; C . Clapham , ist A . S . ; W . C Taylor , 2 nd A . S . ; and W . J . Lardner , Janitor . It was proposed and carried that a P . Z . ' s jewel , of the value of 10 guineas , should be presented to Comp . Cook on his leaving the chair ; for his many and valuable services to the chapter during his year of office , and also that a letter of
condolence should be sent to Comp . G . H . Campbell on a recent heavy bereavement in his family . Comp . Penfold then reverted to the serious relapse which had just taken place with regard to the health of Comp . H . J . Butter , who is so universally beloved among the Pattison association , and proposed that an assurance of the companions ' hopes and prayers for his ultimate recovery should be sent
to him at once . The resolution was carried amid expressions of great sympathy , and then the chapter was closed . Among the other companions present were Comps . C . Coupland , P . Z ., P . P . G . J . ; E . Denton , P . Z ., P . P . G . P . S . ; T . IJ . Hayes , P . Z ., P . P . G . 2 nd A . S . ; H . Mason , P . Z ., P . P . G . R . ; E . B . Hobson , P . Z . ; D . Campbell , | . Topp , F . Tyler , R . S . Cautman , G . R . Nichols , C H . Ough ,
C . Farrier , Dr . H . Bernays , M . D ., H . 1973 ; C . Jolly , M . E . Z . 1472 , ( Hon . 913 ) , all of the chapter ; Capt . D . Deeves , M . E . Z . 13 ; Capt . G . Spinks , P . Z . 13 ; F . G . Nichols , S . N . 1973 ; Edmonds , 1507 ; A . Fenn , 13 ; F . N . Whitmarsh , 8 ; and others . After enjoying a banquet , served in the hall , the usual loyal and Grand Chapter toasts were honoured , and were
followed by that of "The Right Hon . Earl Amherst , G . Superintendent of the Province of Kent . " Comp . Penfold responded for " Comp . Eastes , Grand H ., and the rest of the Provincial Grand Officers , Present and Past , " and in so doing assured the companions of the
pleasure he felt at being a Prov . Grand Officer of their province . It was a toast that was always most heartily received and responded to in that chapter , because the majority of them had an intelligent knowledge of the very great services rendered both to the Craft and Royal Arch by Earl Amherst and Comp . Eastes , and for it he thanked them in return .
Royal Arch.
Comp . Hobson , I . P . Z ., then proposed the toast of "Th < : M . E . Z . " He said he called their attention to the fact that that was the last meeting , in all probability , that their esteemed Comp . Cook would preside over them , and respond for the toast of M . E . Z . At their next meeting in July he would have retired with all his honours thick upon him in favour of his elected successor . They had had
during his year of office plenty of opportunities of criticising him and his work , and had found him the right man in the right place , which , combined with his genial and kindly sway , had won him the esteem and warm regard of every companion of the chapter . Of course it was easy to waltz through the work , but no one could say that of Comp . Cook , who had carried out his duties conscientiously . He
was not only conscientious but well meaning , and entitled to all the honour that could and might be bestowed upon him . The toast was drunk right heartily , and in response , Comp . Cook said they had been good enough to respond heartily to the toast so eloquently put by Comp . Hobson , and for that he could only thank them . Well , most of those who knew his character and habits , knew that he
was generally too idle to learn much more than the ABC of anything , and yet , with that before them , they had placed him in office and were actually pleased with the manner in which he had carried out the task imposed on him ; it was most gratifying , but certainly unexpected , and showed him how truly Masonic and brotherly they were in estimating him and his services . He had endeavoured
to satisfy them , and notwithstanding all his shortcomings they had expressed their approval of those endeavours . He felt that their expressions of regard were sincere in every respect , and for that he thanked them most sincerely . Comp . Roberts , in responding for " The Second and Third Principals , " said the flattering remarks of their M . E . Z . made him look forward very demurely to the heavy
responsibility about to fall upon him , especially after the manner in which he had also just depreciated himself . There was one thing , however , the M . E . Z . could not deny , and that was that he had had a very successful year of office , and one that he , Comp . Roberts , could only hope would fall to his lot , and further , if it should , that he should only be able to work as well and carry it out to so
successful an issue as Comp . Cook had . Comp . Palmer only wished that he could make a speech . He had been trying all his life to do so but could not , for if ever he felt the necessity of that knowledge it was that night . He could only say that he hoped to do better in the future than he had done in the past . Comps . Deeves , Jolly , and Edmonds responded for " The
Visitors , " and in . responding for "The P . Z . 's " Comp . Hayes said most of those who had gone through the chair knew how necessary was the assistance of the Past Principals , who , he was glad to say , were always recognised in the Pattison Chapter as good companions and hard working Masons . He was second to none in his desire for the prosperity of the chapter , and trusted to be
spared for many years to meet among the chapter the kindly faces that now surrounded him . Comp . Lawson , in responding for " The Officers , " said he took it as very small praise to say that any officer , whether in a lodge or chapter , discharged his duties to the best of his abilities , because by so doing he was only doing his duty in that position ,. otherwise he had no right to retain
it . He was sorry to say that although he should have liked to have first occupied the chair of his mother chapter before occupying another , yet that could not be , as he would , if nothing happened to hinder it , be in the chair of another chapter some two and a half years before he could
attain that of the Pattison Chapter , but whatever position he might hold in it ( the Pattison ) , he felt certain of this , that he should do his utmost to fill it with credit to himself and the chapter , and that was the feeling that inspired every officer around him . The Janitor ' s toast concluded the proceedings .
NORTH WOOLWICH . — Henley Chapter ( No . 1472 ) . —The installation meeting of the above snug little chapter took place on Tuesday , the 16 th inst ., at the Three Crowns Hotel , when Comp . C . Jolly , H ., M . E . Z . elect , was placed in the chair of that office . Comp . Hill was installed as H ., and Comp . C . H . Canning as J . The M . E . Z . invested his officers as follows : Comps . R . J . Warren , P . Z ., Treas . ; B . B . Brayshaw , Scribe E . ; B .
Curtis , Asst . Soj . ; Bradford , D . C ; G . E . Letton ( a joining member that day ) , Stwd . ; and J . Ives , Janitor . The other officers elected—Comps . C . Lewis , Scribe N . ; J . Savage , P . S . ; and C . Wood , ist A . S . —were unavoidably absent , but will be invested at the next meeting . That grand master of Masonry , Comp . A . Penfold , P . Z ., P . Z . 13 and 913 , P . P . G . ist A . S ., was the Installing
Officer , and did the work splendidly , for which he was accorded a hearty vote of thanks , the same to be inscribed on the minutes of the chapter , and for which he eloquently returned thanks . Comp . J . Aillud , the retiring M . E . Z ., was presented with a handsome P . Z . 's jewel , of the value of 10 guineas , for which he also returned thanks . Comp . E . West , P . Z ., and P . Z . 13 , acted as D . C . during the
ceremony . The chapter was then closed , and the companions sat down to a recherche little banquet , admirably served by Bro . Richardson , the host . The usual loyal and Grand Chapter toasts having been , as we trust they will ever be , duly honoured , The l . P . Z . proposed the toast of "The M . E . Z ., " and
in so doing , said that they would find in their M . E . Z . not only a good Mason and a good worker , but a man of the world , who would attract to the chapter many a worthy brother and companion , and thus bring into it new blood , which it was at present in need of . The M . E . Z . was a Past Master of the Henley and other lodges , and he felt sure that under his genial rule the chapter would increase
both in prestige and numbers . As the Henley Lodge and Chapter sprung from the Capper Lodge ,- so he trusted some of the Capper brethren would join and support their offspring . He wished Comp . Jolly a successful year of office , and felt sure that he would have one , and he asked them to drink the toast in bumpers . The M . E . Z ,, having responded in a lengthy and feeling
speech , proposed the toast of "The Installing Officer , Comp . Penfold , " and , in so doing , dwelt upon the many long and faithful services rendered to Freemasonry of every degree by their beloved and revered companion and brother Penfold , who "did good by stealth , and blushed to find it fame . " Comp . Penfold , who was loudly cheered as he rose to

Sidney
Horton , 153 6 , and , proving unanimous , that brother was exalted , the long and impressive ceremony being faultlessly worked by the M . E . Z . and his Principals , Comp . Lawson performing the arduous duty of P . S . admirably . The following companions were then elected as Principals and officers for the ensuing year : Comps . Roberts , Z . ; Palmer , H . ; S . Clarke , J . ; H . J . Butter , P . Z ., P . P . G . P . S ., S . E . ;
