Nevertheless , we must reluctantly pass these over , in

order to find room for a brief summary of his leading contributions to the literature of the Craft . " It has been stated on good authority , and we trust the rumour will prove to be a correct one , that our brother is at present engaged on a History of the famous

Lodge of Antiquity , with which body he has been so long and honourably connected . Lastly , it may be said of Bro . Rylands that , while one of the most accurate and diligent of Masonic students , he is , at the same time , one of the most modest and retiring of men . Hence by the Craft at large his great services to Masonic archeology are at best very imperfectly recognised , though within the ever-growing Circle of the Quatuor Coronati , they are rated at their true worth , and it may be confidently asserted that there is no member of No . 2076 who enjoys in a higher degree the respect of his fellow students or the affection of his friends .

GRAND SWORD BEARER . Bro . Colonel J AMES WARD , C . B ., is a very old member of our Order , having been initiated into it nearly 40 years since . The work he has done , however , has been of a quiet and unostentatious character . For several years past he has been a member of the Globe Lodge , No . 23 , and in 1889 he became a founder , and has

since filled the chair , of the London Irish Rifles Lodge , No . 2312 , of which H . R . H . the Duke of Connaught , M . W . Past G . Master , is W . M . He is a Patron and has served three Stewardships for the Girls' School , a Vice-Patron and once Steward for the Boys' School , and a Life Governor of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution .

DEPUTY GRAND SWORD BEARER . Bro . J . S . CUMBERLAND is a Mason of many years' standing , having been initiated in the Lodge of Antiquity , No . 178 , Wigan , in April 1 S 71 . Five years later , we find him founder and first Junior Warden of the Eboracum Lodge , No . 1611 , York , of which in due time he was installed VV . M . For his services in respect of this lodge he was subseouently appointed Prov . Grand Warden of

North and East Yorkshire . On removing to London , in 1884 , his zeal for Freemasonry was increased , and he conceived the idea of forming a lodge in London which should constitute a Masonic home for brethren hailing from the Northern Counties of England , and attract as members such as were connected by family , business , or other ties with those Counties . The idea was very happily conceived , and has borne fruit in the shape of the United Northern

Counties' Lodge , No . 2128 , which was consecrated in 18 S 5 , with Bro . Cumberland himself as the first W . M . He has also done excellent service on the Board of General Purposes and the Colonial Board , of which latter he has been continuously a member since 1888 . We may also mention that he is an honorary member of the Ancient Carthage Lodge , No . 1717 , Tunis , and a member of the Correspondence Circle of the

Quatuor Coronati Lodge , No . 2076 . He was exalted in St . Germain Chapter , Selby , in 18 74 , was a founder and twice M . E . Z . of the Eboracum Chapter , No . 1611 , and successively Prov . Grand Standard Bearer and Prov . G . J . in the Prov . Grand Chapter of North and East Yorkshire , while last year he was appointed an A . G . D . of C . of Supreme Grand Chapter . He has also served on the General Committee of Grand Chapter . He was advanced to the Mark Degree in 1 S 72 in

Ihe Roberts Lodge , No . 24 , Rochdale , is a P . M . of the 1 ork rime Immemorial Mark Lodge , a Past Prov . S . G . W . North and East Yorkshire , and a Past Grand Steward and Past Grand Overseer in Mark Grand Lodge , and was installed as W . C . N , in the Degree of Royal Ark Mariner in 1877 . He is also a member of Ihe Allied Degrees and in the Order of the Temple , in which he was installed a knight in 1875 , a Past E . P . of the Ancient Ebor Preceptory , York , Past Prov .

Grand Sub-Marshal North and East Yorkshire , Past A . G . D . C . of Great Priory , and Hon . Member of the Mary Commandery , Philadelphia , and the Apollo Commandery , Chicago . In the Order of Rome and Red Cross of Constantine , he ranks as Past M . P . S ., and Past Grand High Chancellor of the Grand Imperial Council . In the Ancient and Accepted Rite , he is Past M . W . S . of the Hilda Rose Croix Chapter , ol York ) Past Prov . S . G . W . of Lancashire and Cheshire in

the Royal Order of Scotland , and a member of the Bruce Chapter , London ; and Suffragan and Hon . V 1 I 1 . of the Rosicrucian Society . As regards the Charities , lie has devoted considerable attention to their welfare ; is a Life Governor of each of them , and has served as Festival Steward on as many as 15 different occasions . His has been a long and busy career in Masonry , and there is none who will begrudge him the honour conferred upon him on Wednesday .

GRAND STANDARD BEARERS . Bro . HOWARD H . ROOM , who for the last few years has filled with great ability the important office of Prov , Grand Secretary of Middlesex , and has been chosen for one of these appointments , was initiated in the Royal Hanover Lodge , No . 1777 , on the 24 th July , 1880 . The following year he joined the Ewell Lodge . No . 1851 , Kingston , Surrey , and in 1 S 82 the Marquis of Dalhousie Lodge , No .

• 159 . In 1 S 8 5 , he was a founder and first VV . M . of the Hammersmith Lodge , No . 2000 , and has also occupied the chair in his other lodges as follows , namely , of the Marquis of Dalhousie in 188 S , of the Ewell Lodge in 18 S 9 , and of his mother lodge in 1890 . He is also a joining member of Shakespeare Lodge , No . 99 , and has been Prov . G . Secretary of Middlesex since 1888 . He was exalted lo the

Royal Arch in the Chapter of Regularity , No . 91 , in March , 1882 , and was installed its M . E . Z . in 1887 . He was one of the founders- and is a P . Z . of the Ewell Chapter , No . 1 S 51 , in r 889 , and occupied the chair of First Principal in the Marquis of Dalhousie Chapter , No . 1159 . He is a Life Governor of all the three Institutions , and has served a Stewardship for each of them .

Bro . J OSEPH TODD has for a long term of years been a leading member ol the Fraternity in the Province of North and East Yorkshire . He was initiated on the 4 th February , 18 G 1 , in what was then the Union Lodge , No . 28 7 , York - now the York Lodge , No . 2313 , and having been successively appointed Junior and Senior Warden , was installed in office as W . M . in December , 1 S 70 . Erom 1 S 73 to 18 77 inclusive he acted as Secretary and was then transferred lo the post

° I Treasurer , which he has held by annual re-election ever since . Moreover , from 1 S 78 to the present time he has acted as Installing Master , nor is there a brother Who has been elected W . M . during all those years whom Bro . Todd has not Personally inductedinto the chair of K . S . Asa matter of coursesuch services as these have been again and again recognised by the Provincial authorities , and we lino Bro . Todd appointed Prov . Grand Registrar of North and East Yorkshire in ' 878 . In 1887 the Earl of Zetland conferred upon him the rank of a Past Prov .

The Grand Officers.

S . G . Warden , while since 18 93 he has served as Prov . G . Treasurer . He has also been Vice-Chairman of the Provincial Charity Association since 1885 , Vice-Chairman since 187 S , as well as Treasurer since 18 93 , of the Educational Fund . In 1 S 79 he was exalted in the Zetland Chapter , No . 236 , and has twice tilled the chair of First Principal , namely , in 1 S 74 and 1 S 76 , while he has since served uninterruptedly as Treasurer . In iS ; 9 hewas rewarded for his services to Roval

Arch Masonry with the appointment of I ' rov . G . J . of N . and E . Yorkshire , a " nd since 18 93 has been Prov . G . Treasurer . He has attained to almost equal distinction in Mark Masonry , having been advanced in the York Time Immemorial Lodge on the 14 th May , 1861 , and having served the office of VV . M . in 1 S 73 , and for the second and third times in 1 S 93 and 1 S 94 . He was Treasurer of the Prov . Grand Mark Lodge of North and East Yorkshire , from 1 SS 1 to iSSt inclusive , and in

1887 , the year of the ( Jueen ' s Jubilee , his services to ( he Degree were recognised by his appointment to the rank of Past G . S . Overseer of Mark Grand Lodge . Bro . Todd has served a Stewardship for the Girls' School , and is a Life Subscriber of the three Institutions . He is , too , one of the very limited number of brethren who nave rendered service in a literary capacity . He is the author of the

History of the York Lodge , No . 236 , which was published in 1 S 75 , and was one of the editors of the " York Rolls of Constitutions , " which was published last year . His appointment to office in Grand Lod ge will be very popular with the brethren of North and East Yorkshire , by whom he has always been deservedly held in the highest respect .

GRAND ORGANIST . Bro . H . F . FROST , who has been organist of the Chapel Royal Savoy for many years past , and enjoys the reputation of being one of our ablest musical critics , was initiated in The Great City Lodge , No . 1426 , in September , 1 S 77 . A

few years later he was elected a joining member of the John Hervey Lodge , No . 1260 , and on the Sth April , 1888 , had the honour of being installed W . M . He was exalted to the Royal Arch Degree in 18 79 in the John Hervey Chapter , No . 1260 , and was installed M . E . Z . in 1890 . He is a Life Subscriber of the Girls ' School and a Life Governor of the Boys' School .

ASSISTANT GRAND SECRETARY . Bro . WILLIAM LAKE , whose appointment in the early days of the present year to the office of Chief Clerk in the Grand Secretary ' s office , on the resignation of Bro . A . A . Pend / ebury , gave such general satisfaction , has had the post of Assistant Grand Secretary conferred upon him , and we gladly avail ourselves of the opportunity ot congratulating him on his well-merited preferment . Lake is a Mason of old standing , and long and varied experience in all matters relating to the Craft . He was initiated in the Lodge of Fortitude , No . 131 , Truro , on the I 2 ( h August , 1862 , and was installed W . M . in 1 S 69 , his immediate predecessor in the chair being Bro . W . J . Hughan , P . G . D . In 1872 he was appointed Prov . Grand Registrar of Cornwall . About the year 18 7 S Bro . Lake came to reside in London , and in a very short time began to lake an active part

in the literary and other duties connected with Freemasonry . In 1883 he became a founder of the St . Bolol ph ' s Lodge , No . 2020 , and , after filling the office of Secretary from its consecration till last year , he was elected VV . M ., and since then has been installed in its chair . In 1 S 90 he became a founder of the Cornish Lodge , No . 236 9 , and has held the office of Treasurer from the very beginning . In Royal Arch Masonry he has taken a still more conspicuous part . He

was exalted in the Royal Cornubian Chapter , No . 331 , Truro , and he filled the chair of Second Principal in 1878 , having in the interim been appointed to the post of Registrar in the Prov . Grand Chapter . In 18 79 he joined the St . Dunstan ' s Chapter , No . 18 95 , and became M . E . Z . in 1 S 83 . In 1 S 81 he was one of the founders and first H . of the West Kent Chapter , No . 1297 , and succeeded to the chair of '/ ,. the year following ; while in 18 S 4

he was a founder of the Mozart Chapter , No . 1929 , Croydon , and having held the post of Treasurer for some time , resigned , and was elected an honorary member . He was advanced in the Fortitude Mark Lodge , No . 78 , Truro , and served the office of VV . M . in 187 S . In 18 76 he was appointed Prov . Grand Registrar of Cornwall , and in 1 S 8 7 Grand Steward of Mark Grand Lodge . He is also the E . P . of the Bard of Avon Preceptory of Knights Templar , Past M . P . S . of the Premier

Conclave of the Order of Rome and Red Cross of Constantine , and a member of the Allied , Royal and Select Masters , and the Rosicrucian Orders , while as regards the Ancient and Accepted Rite , he was perlected Rose Croix , 18 " , in the Cornwall Chapter , in February , 1875 , and was a founder and is P . M . W . S . of the Cieur de Lion Chapter . He is a Life-Governor of the Three Masonic Institutions , and has served 13 Stewardships , namely , five for the Girls' School , six for the Boys ' School , and two for the Benevolent Inslitution . For several years Bro . Lake was

editor of this journal , and in that capacity had opportunities which fall to the lot of few of strengthening and promoting the interests of Freemasonry . That he used those opportunities to the great benefit of the Craft and to his own credit was demonstrated in December last by his selection to be the successor of Bro . Pendlebury in the Grand Secretary's office , and the justice of that selection is confirmed by his appointment to the still more dignified post of Assistant Grand Secretary .

GRAND PURSUIVANT . Bro . J NEWTON , who has been a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society since 1 S 62 , and is the author of sundry valuable text books on Navigation and Seamanship , was initiated in ( he Lodge of Sincerity , No . 174 , on the 12 th April , 1861 , was installed W . M . in 18 G 6 , and on retiring from the chair was appointed Secretary . He was u founder and first W . M . of the Lodge of Loyalty , No . 1607 , in 18 7 6 . In Royal Arch Masonry he was exalted in Sincerity Chapter ,

No . 174 , in 186 7 , and was installed M . E . Z . in 1871 ; and he is also a P . Z . of the Rose of Denmark Chapter , No . 975 of which he became a joining member in 1 S 70 . He is also a member of the Colonial Board , and has taken a prominent part on the Committee of Management of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution , of which he is a Vice-Patron , and in whose behalf he has served the office of Festival Steward on five different occasions . He is also a Life-Governor of both our Scholastic Institutions .

ASSISTANT GRAND PURSUIVANT . Bro . HARRY TIIM ' was initiated in Tranquillity Lodge , No . 18 s :, on the 19 th April , 1 H 80 . In May , 1 SS 4 , he helped to found King Solomon Lodge , No . 2029 , a lodge which is conducted on temperance principles , and the year following he rendered the further service of assisting in the foundation of the Hammersmith Lodge , No . 2 otjo , and was invested as its first S . W . In the course of the

same year he became a joining member of the Wilson lies Lodge , No . 2054 , Rickmaiisworth , in the Province of Hertfordshire , and two years later became a member of the ( Juatuor Coronati Lodge , No . 2076 . He has occupied the chair in the Hammersmith Lodge ( 1 S 86 ) , in the Tranquillity Lodge , No . 18 5 ( 1 SS 7 ) , and in ' the Wilson lies Lodge , No , 2054 ( in 1888 ) , and for his scivices in behalf of the last-mentioned lodge was , in 1881 ) , appointed Prov . Grand Registrar of

Hertfordshire . He was exalted in Faith Royal Arch Chapter , No . 141 , on the 17 th May , 1 S 82 , and installed M . E . Z . in iSSS , and he is likewise a Past M . W . S . of the Bard of Avon Chapter , No . 44 , Rose Croix , under the Supreme Council of the Anient and Accepted Rite . He has served twice as Festival Steward for the Girls ' School , twice for the Benevolent Institution , and once for the Boys' School , and is a Life Governor of the three Charities .

As regards the Charities , lie has devoted considerable attention to their welfare ; is a Life Governor of each of them , and has served as Festival Steward on as many as 15 different occasions . His has been a long and busy career in Masonry , and there is none who will begrudge him the honour conferred upon him on Wednesday .

GRAND STANDARD BEARERS . Bro . HOWARD H . ROOM , who for the last few years has filled with great ability the important office of Prov , Grand Secretary of Middlesex , and has been chosen for one of these appointments , was initiated in the Royal Hanover Lodge , No . 1777 , on the 24 th July , 1880 . The following year he joined the Ewell Lodge . No . 1851 , Kingston , Surrey , and in 1 S 82 the Marquis of Dalhousie Lodge , No .

• 159 . In 1 S 8 5 , he was a founder and first VV . M . of the Hammersmith Lodge , No . 2000 , and has also occupied the chair in his other lodges as follows , namely , of the Marquis of Dalhousie in 188 S , of the Ewell Lodge in 18 S 9 , and of his mother lodge in 1890 . He is also a joining member of Shakespeare Lodge , No . 99 , and has been Prov . G . Secretary of Middlesex since 1888 . He was exalted lo the

Royal Arch in the Chapter of Regularity , No . 91 , in March , 1882 , and was installed its M . E . Z . in 1887 . He was one of the founders- and is a P . Z . of the Ewell Chapter , No . 1 S 51 , in r 889 , and occupied the chair of First Principal in the Marquis of Dalhousie Chapter , No . 1159 . He is a Life Governor of all the three Institutions , and has served a Stewardship for each of them .

Bro . J OSEPH TODD has for a long term of years been a leading member ol the Fraternity in the Province of North and East Yorkshire . He was initiated on the 4 th February , 18 G 1 , in what was then the Union Lodge , No . 28 7 , York - now the York Lodge , No . 2313 , and having been successively appointed Junior and Senior Warden , was installed in office as W . M . in December , 1 S 70 . Erom 1 S 73 to 18 77 inclusive he acted as Secretary and was then transferred lo the post

° I Treasurer , which he has held by annual re-election ever since . Moreover , from 1 S 78 to the present time he has acted as Installing Master , nor is there a brother Who has been elected W . M . during all those years whom Bro . Todd has not Personally inductedinto the chair of K . S . Asa matter of coursesuch services as these have been again and again recognised by the Provincial authorities , and we lino Bro . Todd appointed Prov . Grand Registrar of North and East Yorkshire in ' 878 . In 1887 the Earl of Zetland conferred upon him the rank of a Past Prov .

The Grand Officers.

S . G . Warden , while since 18 93 he has served as Prov . G . Treasurer . He has also been Vice-Chairman of the Provincial Charity Association since 1885 , Vice-Chairman since 187 S , as well as Treasurer since 18 93 , of the Educational Fund . In 1 S 79 he was exalted in the Zetland Chapter , No . 236 , and has twice tilled the chair of First Principal , namely , in 1 S 74 and 1 S 76 , while he has since served uninterruptedly as Treasurer . Arch Masonry with the appointment of I ' rov . G . J . of N . and E . Yorkshire , a " nd since 18 93 has been Prov . G . Treasurer . He has attained to almost equal distinction in Mark Masonry , having been advanced in the York Time Immemorial Lodge on the 14 th May , 1861 , and having served the office of VV . M . in 1 S 73 , and for the second and third times in 1 S 93 and 1 S 94 . He was Treasurer of the Prov . Grand Mark Lodge of North and East Yorkshire , from 1 SS 1 to iSSt inclusive , and in

1887 , the year of the ( Jueen ' s Jubilee , his services to ( he Degree were recognised by his appointment to the rank of Past G . S . Overseer of Mark Grand Lodge . Bro . Todd has served a Stewardship for the Girls' School , and is a Life Subscriber of the three Institutions . He is , too , one of the very limited number of brethren who nave rendered service in a literary capacity . He is the author of the

History of the York Lodge , No . 236 , which was published in 1 S 75 , and was one of the editors of the " York Rolls of Constitutions , " which was published last year . His appointment to office in Grand Lod ge will be very popular with the brethren of North and East Yorkshire , by whom he has always been deservedly held in the highest respect .

GRAND ORGANIST . Bro . H . F . FROST , who has been organist of the Chapel Royal Savoy for many years past , and enjoys the reputation of being one of our ablest musical critics , was initiated in The Great City Lodge , No . 1426 , in September , 1 S 77 . A

few years later he was elected a joining member of the John Hervey Lodge , No . 1260 , and on the Sth April , 1888 , had the honour of being installed W . M . He was exalted to the Royal Arch Degree in 18 79 in the John Hervey Chapter , No . 1260 , and was installed M . E . Z . in 1890 . He is a Life Subscriber of the Girls ' School and a Life Governor of the Boys' School .

ASSISTANT GRAND SECRETARY . Bro . WILLIAM LAKE , whose appointment in the early days of the present year to the office of Chief Clerk in the Grand Secretary ' s office , on the resignation of Bro . A . A . Pend / ebury , gave such general satisfaction , has had the post of Assistant Grand Secretary conferred upon him , and we gladly avail ourselves of the opportunity ot congratulating him on his well-merited preferment . Lake is a Mason of old standing , and long and varied experience in all matters relating to the Craft . He was initiated in the Lodge of Fortitude , No . 131 , Truro , on the I 2 ( h August , 1862 , and was installed W . M . in 1 S 69 , his immediate predecessor in the chair being Bro . W . J . Hughan , P . G . D . In 1872 he was appointed Prov . Grand Registrar of Cornwall . About the year 18 7 S Bro . Lake came to reside in London , and in a very short time began to lake an active part

in the literary and other duties connected with Freemasonry . In 1883 he became a founder of the St . Bolol ph ' s Lodge , No . 2020 , and , after filling the office of Secretary from its consecration till last year , he was elected VV . M ., and since then has been installed in its chair . In 1 S 90 he became a founder of the Cornish Lodge , No . 236 9 , and has held the office of Treasurer from the very beginning . In Royal Arch Masonry he has taken a still more conspicuous part . He

was exalted in the Royal Cornubian Chapter , No . 331 , Truro , and he filled the chair of Second Principal in 1878 , having in the interim been appointed to the post of Registrar in the Prov . Grand Chapter . In 18 79 he joined the St . Dunstan ' s Chapter , No . 18 95 , and became M . E . Z . in 1 S 83 . In 1 S 81 he was one of the founders and first H . of the West Kent Chapter , No . 1297 , and succeeded to the chair of '/ ,. the year following ; while in 18 S 4

he was a founder of the Mozart Chapter , No . 1929 , Croydon , and having held the post of Treasurer for some time , resigned , and was elected an honorary member . He was advanced in the Fortitude Mark Lodge , No . 78 , Truro , and served the office of VV . M . in 187 S . In 18 76 he was appointed Prov . Grand Registrar of Cornwall , and in 1 S 8 7 Grand Steward of Mark Grand Lodge . He is also the E . P . of the Bard of Avon Preceptory of Knights Templar , Past M . P . S . of the Premier

Conclave of the Order of Rome and Red Cross of Constantine , and a member of the Allied , Royal and Select Masters , and the Rosicrucian Orders , while as regards the Ancient and Accepted Rite , he was perlected Rose Croix , 18 " , in the Cornwall Chapter , in February , 1875 , and was a founder and is P . M . W . S . of the Cieur de Lion Chapter . He is a Life-Governor of the Three Masonic Institutions , and has served 13 Stewardships , namely , five for the Girls' School , six for the Boys ' School , and two for the Benevolent Inslitution . For several years Bro . Lake was

editor of this journal , and in that capacity had opportunities which fall to the lot of few of strengthening and promoting the interests of Freemasonry . That he used those opportunities to the great benefit of the Craft and to his own credit was demonstrated in December last by his selection to be the successor of Bro . Pendlebury in the Grand Secretary's office , and the justice of that selection is confirmed by his appointment to the still more dignified post of Assistant Grand Secretary .

GRAND PURSUIVANT . Bro . J NEWTON , who has been a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society since 1 S 62 , and is the author of sundry valuable text books on Navigation and Seamanship , was initiated in ( he Lodge of Sincerity , No . 174 , on the 12 th April , 1861 , was installed W . M . in 18 G 6 , and on retiring from the chair was appointed Secretary . He was u founder and first W . M . of the Lodge of Loyalty , No . 1607 , in 18 7 6 . In Royal Arch Masonry he was exalted in Sincerity Chapter ,

No . 174 , in 186 7 , and was installed M . E . Z . in 1871 ; and he is also a P . Z . of the Rose of Denmark Chapter , No . 975 of which he became a joining member in 1 S 70 . He is also a member of the Colonial Board , and has taken a prominent part on the Committee of Management of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution , of which he is a Vice-Patron , and in whose behalf he has served the office of Festival Steward on five different occasions . He is also a Life-Governor of both our Scholastic Institutions .

ASSISTANT GRAND PURSUIVANT . Bro . HARRY TIIM ' was initiated in Tranquillity Lodge , No . 18 s :, on the 19 th April , 1 H 80 . In May , 1 SS 4 , he helped to found King Solomon Lodge , No . 2029 , a lodge which is conducted on temperance principles , and the year following he rendered the further service of assisting in the foundation of the Hammersmith Lodge , No . 2 otjo , and was invested as its first S . W . In the course of the

same year he became a joining member of the Wilson lies Lodge , No . 2054 , Rickmaiisworth , in the Province of Hertfordshire , and two years later became a member of the ( Juatuor Coronati Lodge , No . 2076 . He has occupied the chair in the Hammersmith Lodge ( 1 S 86 ) , in the Tranquillity Lodge , No . 18 5 ( 1 SS 7 ) , and in ' the Wilson lies Lodge , No , 2054 ( in 1888 ) , and for his scivices in behalf of the last-mentioned lodge was , in 1881 ) , appointed Prov . Grand Registrar of

Hertfordshire . He was exalted in Faith Royal Arch Chapter , No . 141 , on the 17 th May , 1 S 82 , and installed M . E . Z . in iSSS , and he is likewise a Past M . W . S . of the Bard of Avon Chapter , No . 44 , Rose Croix , under the Supreme Council of the Anient and Accepted Rite . He has served twice as Festival Steward for the Girls ' School , twice for the Benevolent Institution , and once for the Boys' School , and is a Life Governor of the three Charities .
