THE FREEMASONS' CALENDAR AND DIRECTORY FOR THE PROVINCE OF ESSEX , 1 S 93 . This handsomely got-up annual is edited by the respected Prov . Grand Secretary , Bro . T . J . Railing , and is in its ninth year of publication . VVe are pleased to note a decent portrait of the editor , and have been gratified whilst perusing a neat little Masonic biography of that svorthy
brother , communicated by an appreciative Craftsman . The " Masonic Notes" are a first-rate guide tor Masters of lodges , and also Secretaries , as they cover the ground pretty fully as to the necessary returns of all kinds . We like the page " Events of the year 1 S 92 , " and svonder the plan is not more generally follosved . There are 33 lodges svith some 1700 members . The total is not given , but sve think
that svill be found pretty accurate . The enormous number of 9033 votes are held by these Masonic bodies and brethren , a result most honourable to the Province of Essex , and a grand example to others . The names of all the voters , lodges , brethren , & c , have been ably compiled and detailed by Bro . P . Hasvard Ives . There are 11 Royal Arch chapters , but the Mark lodges are included in the
Province of East Anglia , presided over by Bro . Lord Henniker , Prov . G . M . ( P . G . M . ) . The Royal Arch has Comp . Frederick A . Philbrick , Q . C ., as Grand Superintendent , and the esteemed Craft Prov . G . M . is the Right Hon . Lord Brooke . The province is large but well managed , and much of its success is due to having such a painstaking Prov . Grand Secretary .
OFFICIAL DIRECTORY FOR THE PROVINCE OF CORNWALL , 1 S 93 . This svell-knosvn annual is in its 22 nd year of issue , and is one of the oldest of the kind . The present publication is one of the best of the series , and has been ably edited by Bro . J . C . R . Cresves , P . M . 131 , Truro , from svhom copies may be had post free for seven stamps . The arrangement
of the directory as ^ respects the lodges , chapters , and Mark lodges , the officers , Past Masters , Sic , and as respects the Past and Present Prov . There are 30 lodges , returning 16 97 members for December , 1 S 92 , the largest number ever on the provincial roll . The chapters run to 14 nominally , but it is quite clear
a revival is needed in some , for the returns are not up to svhat they should be . The Mark lodges nosv extend to 12 , and it is quite evident the Degree is very popular in Cornsvall , where it svas first planted nearly 30 years ago . The list of voters in the Central Masonic Charities has been ably arranged by the Charity Representative , Bro . Charles Truscott , P . M . 496 , and shosvs a grand total of --, ( 170 , svhich is

M ., " and in the course of an eloquent speech declared
that he had never proposed a toast svith greater pleasure than the one that evening committed to his charge . Their W . M . had nosv gained the position that he had striven so hard for , and all svho had svitnessed his svorking in the various offices he had filled in that lodge , svould agree svith him , that in Bro . Whitby they had a good Mason , svho svould make a good Master , and so maintain the prestige and dignity of the Strong Man Lodge . They looked
forsvard to a very prosperous year of office under the rule of their W . M ., and he felt sure they would not be disappointed . He knesv the time svhen the lodge had but some 20 members , but there svas a vast change nnsv , and of that nuenber a large proportion svere nosv Past Masters . They had nosv a good strong lodge , and he felt sssre that they svould keep up its reputation as " second to none in the Craft . "
The W . M ., in response , regretted and admitted that he svas not a speech-maker , but could assure them that during his year of office he should do all in his posver for the furtherance of Masonry and the best interests of the lodge . ' * The Initiate " having been toasted , and he having suitably responded , The toast of "The I . P . M . " follosved , and Bro . Brutv ,
in response , briefly thanked the brethren , and said that if he had deserved their hearty good svish—and they seemed to think so—that svas his best resvard . He svas then presented svith a handsome and costly Past Master ' s jesvel , for svhich he thanked the brethren , and assured them that he should alsvays svear and prize it svith pride and pleasure . "The Visitors , " "The Installing Master , " "The Past
Masters , " "The Treasurer and Secretary , and "The Officers" svere the remaining toasts , and svere duly honoured . The Tyler's toast brought the proceedings to a close . The singing svas very good indeed , especially that of Mr . Herbert Grover , svho has a grand voice , and knows hosv to use it . Bro . Gardner also contributed some capital songs , as also did Bros . A . Whitby , J . Harris , T . Taylor , and T . Burgess .

R . B . Gilson , S . W . j also . £ 5 had been paid to a distressed brother , late of the lodge . These disbursements speak volumes , and thoroughly carry out
the true sentiment of l * reemasonry characteristic of the loelge . A letter svas read from Bro . C . VV . Peters , P . M ., Sec , svho svas unavoidably absent through illness . Telegrams svere also received from Bro . Knosvles , J . D ., and Mr . Pike , svho svas to have been initiated , being called asvay very urgently . The business of the lodge ended , the brethren adjourned to an excellent supper provided by the svorthy host , Bro .

maintained . The toast of '' The Visitors" svas next presented by the VV . M . in a very cordial manner , svho gave them alia hearty greeting . Bros . Rawle , Tyrrell , and Shelvey responded , and acknowledged the honour done them , especially commenting on the choice of the brethren to the Master ' s chair , as the svork that evening had been done in an exemplary
manner . They likewise spoke of the truly Masonic virtue carried out in the lolgc , and they svished it all prosperity , The toast of "The Past Masters , " the W . M . said , svas to his mind one of the most important , for but for them the lodge could not have been in such a condition as it svas . He was proud that evening of the father of the lodge being present ( Bro . Levy ) , and he hoped Bro . Levy svas proud of his children . All the Past Masters had done good and
suitable service to the lodge . The toast svas heartily responded to by Bro . Levy , svho said he svas really proud of being the father and paving such svorthy children . Bros . Terry , Joyce , Cocke'l , Ellson , and Thomas , I . P . M ., also replied , and promised their best supjiort to maintain the
lodge in its present position . The W . M . next gave the toast of "The Officers , " especially congratulating himself on such an excellent array , more particularly liro . Terry , jun ., though so young a Mason had acted as J . D ., and Bro . Lipscomb , still young , had performed the inner Guard ' s duties most perfectly . The ofiicers svere such as any Iodge could be proud of .
