S 77 , rose and proposed in an eloquent manner "The Masonic Charities , " coupling with it the name of Bro . | J . M . McLeod , Secretary of the R . M . I . for Boys . Bro . McLeod on rising svas received svith approbation ,

and he delivered one of the most telling speeches ever heard in favour ofthe Institution in svhich he is especially interested , and it is believed that he made a great many converts that evening in favour of our noble Institutions . Several brethren contributed to the harmony of the evening , and amongst the number Bros . E . Walden

uickson , Ivingsley , Jones , Goldsmith , and last , not least , Twiddy Caton ( a Lesvis ) , svho proved himself quite at home svith the violin . The Tyler ' s toast brought one of the most enjoyable and thorough harmonious meetings ever held in thc province to a close .

RIVERHEAD . It svas just the day to tempt one from London into the charming suourb

province , Bro . J . S . Eastes , LCD ., and one of the largest assemblies of ••purple" officers the Amherst Lodge has let seen . 30 , against 23 members , treated . In this connection mention maybe made of Bro . Mist ' s exertions ; at his osvn request he retained office as Stesvard for another year , and to his good offices and attention no little of the pleasure of the latter part of the proceedings svas due . The Worshipful Master spoke but few svords , so giving those svho responded to the toasts the opportunity of

speaking at greater length . The Deputy Provincial Grand Alaster svhose presence is eagerly sought for all over the province , had to respond for "The Grand Officers , " and in doing so , he remarked that the Grand Secretary svas full of anxiety that every province shoulel be duly considered in the allotment of Grand Lodge honours , and he hoped there svas nosv a better prospect for

Kent , svhose claims for consideration in the past hael , he thought , not been sufficiently taken notice of . When speaking for the Provincial Grand Master and the officers under him , the svorthy D . P . G . M . said he svas charged by Earl Amherst to say hosv much he regretted not being able to be svith the lodge thatelay . It gave him ( the D . P . G . M . ) great pleasure to be at the installation and see hosv svell the

svork svas done , and to notice the prosperity of the lodge . When anssvering for " The Past Masters of the Lodge , " Bro . E . J . Dodd , P . P . G . Org ., referred to the fact that they had that night seven out of that body present ( as had been the case , year after year , for some time past ) , and reminded the brethren that it svas 14 years since he svas in the chair , at svhich time the lodge svas in such a state that it svas

doubtful svhether it would survive . He well remembered the chat he had then svith their good brother , Bro . Eastes , and his advice , coupled svith the standing together of Bros . Duret , Durtnell , Jesvell , and one or tsvo others , enabled him ( Bro . Dodd ) to pull the lodge round , and nosv they sasv what it svas . Bro . Duret also responded , and expressed the gratification

it afforded him to be still associated svith such a lodge . Bro . Durtnell responded as Treasurer , and said that the quotation against the toast , " Send for more money , " svas correct , for he was pleased to be able to say , as their Treasurer , that he had got it . Bro . Jewell , svho has been Secretary 20 years , and still fills that office most efficiently , svas received svith quite a

demonstration svhen he rose to speak , for all regard him as the "father"of the lodge , and hold him in high esteem . This embellishment of the toast list svith apt and new quotations from his beloved Shakespeare enabled most of the speakers to start svell , and a collection of the Amherst Lodge menu cards svould be most interesting reading . Bro . Fred . Cozens contributed songs in his svell-knosvn

style , and Bro . Crane also sang admirably . It svas a most enjoyable gathering . The follosving svere among the visitors present . —Bros . J . S . Eastes , D . P . G . M ., J . G . D . j J . G . AL , for the very honourable manner he has discharged the office of Treasurer for nearly 10 years to the entire satisfaction of all concerned , and that at an early

date a substantial mark of respect and esteem be shosvn to that svorthy brother by presenting him svith a Alasonic jesvel . All business being ended , the lodge svas closed , and the brethren adjourned to the banqueting room , svhere nearly 50 sat dosvn to a capital banquet , provided by the Guardian of thc Temple , Bro . George Rogers , P . M . and Tyler of the lodge , which banquet was pronounced by competent brethren

to be the best ever served . After the usual loyal and Masonic toasts had been honoured , Bro . Major Raven , P . M .

It svas just the day to tempt one from London into the charming suourb

P . G . M ., J . G . D . j J . G .
