guineas were voted to his list from the funds of the lodge , and then the lodge was closed , and the brethren sat down to a recherche banquet , served in the hall by Bro . Rimer , and which gave every satisfaction . Among the other brethren present were Bros . Major Eugene Sweny , P . M . ( Hon . ) , 44 , P . P . J . G . W . j W . Moulds , P . M ., P . P . G . I . G . j T . Ovenden , P . M ., P . P .

J . G . D . ; Capt . D . Deeves , P . M ., P . D . G . Std . Br . Natal ; G . Nichols , D . Capon , and W . Ray , of the lodge ; J . H . Roberts , W . M . 44 ; E . Morris , J . W . 44 ; Captain G . Hearn , J . W . 411 ; and W . Shackleton , 411 . The usual loyal and Grand Lodge toasts having been honoured , that of "Bro . the Rev . T . Robinson , M . A ., P . G . M ., " was drunk heartily .

The toast of " Bro . the Rev . Hayman Cummings , M . A ., P . P . G . C , P . P . G . Chaplain England , and the rest of the Prov . Grand Officers , Present and Past , " followed , and was coupled with the name of Bro . Sweny , who , in response , said he looked upon it as a high honour to have his name coupled with so important a toast . So far as they in that part of the province were concerned they had no cause of

complaint as to the number of offices distributed amongst them , for both in the Excelsior and in the Florence Nightingale Lodges there were a goodly array of wearers of the purple . He then gave some excellent advice as to the proper working of the ritual , and concluded by congratulating the VV . M . upon obtaining his high position , and assured him that the Prov . Grand Officers , both present and past ,

would not only support him , but be delighted to hear of his success and the prosperity of the lodge . The I . P . M . then proposed the toast of "The W . M ., " and observed that although Bro . Whiteheart had not gone through the chair of a regular lodge , yet during the ten years he had been a member of that lodge he had been such a constant attendant , and had so worthily worked through

every office up to that of S . W ., that the brethren thought it only right that his industry and perseverance should be rewarded by being placed in the chair of A . in his mother lodge , and he felt sure they would never regret their choice . Bro . Whiteheart , in reply , said he had got from the bottom to the top of the lodge , and no brother could do

that unless he worked hard for it . From the time of his initiation , as Bro . Kennedy had told them , ten years ago , he had never been absent from its meetings but once , and then through illness . He trusted to be enabled so to do his duty that they would never regret having reposed their trust in him .

The Worshipful Master , in proposing the toast of " The Past Masters , " spoke highly of their services to the lodge , and regretted the enforced absence of Bro . Capt . G . Spinks through illness . Bro . Kennedy , in responding , spoke of the time when

the lodge was in difficulties , and of the valuable aid given by Bro . Penfold , P . M ., at that critical period of its existence , and who he trusted might long be spared to be a grace and strength to the Excelsior Lodge . For himself and the Past Masters he thanked them for their hearty reception of the toast .

Bro . Penfold , in responding to a most enthusiastic reception of the toast of " The Installing Officer , " said he did not wish the brethren to think that he held the office of Installing Master in that lodge as a freehold , although he had had the honour of filling it for several years . Bro . Matier , the esteemed Grand Secretary , and Bro . Cummings , the D . P . G . M ., and others , had at times performed the

ceremony , and he should have not the least objection to see one of the other Past Masters undertake the office , for he found it a very pleasant thing at times to have a change in the programme , it varied it , and gave , as it were , a new charm , and would , moreover , be the means of communicating to one another new and , perhaps , better styles for working . Bro . Kennedy had spoken of the vicissitudes the lodge had

experienced . Jt had , and so had most young lodges , but if they came out of their difficulties stronger and more reliant , all the better for those difficulties , so much better were they to appreciate their present prosperity and shield themselves from difficulties in the future . He was pleased to see they were determined to maintain the traditions of the lodge , and send up a Steward to the Mark Benevolent

Institution . He trusted Bro . Vansittart would be well supported and take up a sum worthy of the lodge . So far as his personal services that day were concerned , he could only say chat it afforded him a very great deal of pleasure to be of any service he could be to the lodge , and he felt rewarded to the full by the kindly manner in which they had drunk the toast .

" lhe Initiates " followed , and then "The Visitors , " for whom Bros . Roberts , Morris , Hearn , and Shackleton returned thanks . "The Officers" and Tyler ' s toast concluded the proceedings , which were enlivened by some good singing and reciting .

advancement , and with " Hearty good wishes" and several letters of regret for non-attendance , the lodge was closed . At the invitation of the VV . M . the brethren adjourned to the ante-room , where refreshments were provided , and the loyal and Masonic toasts were given and responded to , and a very pleasant evening was spent .

PLUMSTEAD . Excelsior Lodge ( No . 226 ) . —The installation meeting of this flourishing lodge took place on Friday , the ioth inst ., at the Masonic Hall , Mount Pleasant , when Bro . J . Whitehead :, P . G . S . B ., S . W ., VV . M ., was ( by dispensation of Grand Mark Lodge , he not having passed through the chair of a Craft lodge ) p \ aced in the chair of

A ., and saluted in due form . The lodge was opened by the W . M ., Bro . G . Kennedy , P . P . A . G . Sec , and the minutes of the previous meeting having been confirmed , the ballot was taken for Bros . VV . A . Betts , 700 , and D . Jenkins , 212 , and proving unanimous those brethren were advanced to the Degree of a M . M . Bro . A . Penfold , P . M ., P . P . G . M . O ., then , by request , assumed the chair as

Installing Officer , and in his usual careful and perfect manner carried out the important trust placed in his hands . The new W . M . invested his officers as follows : Bros . C . Jolly , P . G . Our distinguished

brother having returned thanks , the W . M . presented Bro . Kennedy with a Past Mark Master's jewel , as a mark of the esteem of the brethren , and as some recognition of the service rendered by him to the lodge during his year of office , for which Bro . Kennedy suitably returned thanks . Bro . Col . Vansittart having consented to stand Steward for the lodge at the forthcoming Mark Benevolent Festival five

guineas were voted to his list from the funds of the lodge , and then the lodge was closed , and the brethren sat down to a recherche banquet , served in the hall by Bro .
