Mrs. Baskcomb's Matinee.

MRS . BASKCOMB'S MATINEE .

Mrs . Baskcomb , whose popularity in the musical world was strongly exemplified by the abnormally large gathering of talent at her matinee on Thursday last , and who vvas equally successful in gathering together a crowded audience , is to be congratulated on achieving so much under the combined disadvantages

of a hot June afternoon and the rivalry of many similar entertainments , but Mrs . Baskcomb has so many pupils in high places , who appear to be only too pleased to show their ' appreciation of their talented teacher when the opportunity occurs , that it is not so much a matter of surprise after all . Our space will not

admit of even noticing a few of the many good things in the long programme , but we may say that it was one of the most varied and charming entertainments it has been our good fortune to record . Bro . Baskcomb acted in the somewhat subordinate but useful capacity of a Steward , but he had the valuable

support of General Roddy , Lieut .-Col . Henry Toms , Bro . Sydney Brough , Mr . St . John Shadwell Clerke , son of the Grand Secretary , who was also present , and many others . Among those present were the Misses Adrian Hupes , neices of the Duke of Fife and former pupils of Mrs . Baskcomb . -A

FUNERAL OF THE LATE BRO . AND MRS . F . DERRY . The funeral of Bro . and Mrs . Frederick Derry took place on the 22 nd inst . The preliminary part of the service was held at the Baptist Church , Hamstead-road , Birmingham , of which Bro . Derry was a deacon , and the second part at the General Cemetery , where the interment took place in the presence of a very large number

of friends , the Rev . Henry Bonner officiating . The coffins were covered with wreaths . The Craft was represented by Bros . Col . Foster Gough , LL . D ., P . G . M . Staffordshire ; and Stocker , W . M . 482 ( of which deceased had been a member for about 30 years ) , and

the following brethren * . Bros . W . J . Whittall , P . M . ; J . Jacobs , P . M . ; J . F . Pepper , P . M . ; J . Deeley , P . M . ; E . R . Kimpton , P . M . ; J . Warrillow , P . W . M . 318 ; W . Lister , H . Loveridge , J . J . James , B . Clarke ^ S . Wood , T . E . Shaw , G . A . Thomason , F . H . Pepper , and others . The Liberal Unionist Association vvas represented by W . Farrow ( Assistant Secretary ); the Forward Club by G . Hanson , C . Jennings , and T . R . Edwards ; the Liberal Unionist

Club by S . Jenkins ; the . Western Divisional Council ( of which deceased was a Vice-President ) by E . J . Smith ( Chairman ) , G . Titterton ( Chairman of St . Paul ' s Ward Association ) , Councillor Bradley , Hy . Payton , C . Caldecott , T . Mackenzie , S . Sargent , T . E . Smith , J . Linegar , W . H . Hemming , Stephen Whitehouse , A .

Bartholomew , W . Cooke , T . Burton , and others . Councillor Bradley also represented the Midland Baptist Association . At the conclusion of the service at the grave an address was delivered by Bro . Col . FOSTER GOUGH , P . G . M ., referring to the long connection of Bro . Derry

with the Craft . He said : As Provincial Grand Master of Staffordshire , or , as I prefer the description , ' as a Mason amongst Masons , standing beside the grave of a brother , I have been somewhat unexpectedl y requested to address you . A serious and solemn event , in fact

two serious and solemn events have caused our Masonic assembly here to-day . Personally I feel a melancholy pleasure in being with you in this hour of trial and bereavement to assist in paying an abundantly well merited tribute of respect to departed worth . I do not deem that we have ground for

sadness save on account of our own loss , and therein we may well feel sad . Neither do I deem the death of our sister as a cause for sorrow . " All that live must die , passing through nature to eternity , " and to my mind there is in our sister ' s death something beautifully in accord with the deepest and dearest

sentiment of the human heart ; something which almost inspires a feeling of thankfulness in our Masonic hearts that those who have so long lived and loved together upon earth have not been separated even b y the grave . In our Bro . Derry Freemasonry has lost one of its most valuable and esteemed officers

helpers , and exemplars ,, as is plainly indicated by the fact that brethren of the Craft , companions of the Royal Arch , and brethren of the Mark Degrees were here assembled to lament their loss in presence of the certainty that his place , his many places in the sphere of Masonic usefulness will know him no more ,

whilst for myself , I sincerely assure you that I deeply feel the loss of one of the most loyal , useful , and valued of my colleagues in the government of my province . One of the grand features of our late brother ' s long Masonic career vvas a stead y , earnest , honest perseverance in well-doing . He was not a

spasmodic worker . He was abvays in earnest , always ready to support the strong , yet always ready to defend and sustain the weak . His honesty and integrity of purpose were far above suspicion , whilst his persevering industry has enabled him to leave a work , a long series of works , which will ever be

gratefully associated with his name—I mean , of course , our Staffordshire Masonic Calendar . A word more as to one of the bright examples our late brother has afforded us . It is one each of us may well lay to heart . He was not spoiled by success . High , if not the hi ghest honours were conferred upon him by the

provincial rulers of the Craft , the Royal Arch , and the Mark Degrees , but instead of accepting those honours , as is too often the case , as a receipt in full of all demands , an excuse for retirement or apathy , he loyally and nobly accepted them in the true spirit in which they were offered , namely , for

the sole purpose of stimulating his zeal , increasing his opportunities , and encouraging his industry in the subsequent performances of his Masonic work . This is a legacy our brother has bequeathed to ourselves , and to all who shall come after us , and no words of mine can possibly enhance its value or import . It

is not necessary or fitting I should here say more as well I might , respecting our brother ' s Masonic work or worth , and in the spirit of the sublime burial service which has been so eloquently and touchingly rendered , I will only add our brother has but gone before us . We shall soon follow after him , and

which of us has now the better part God alone can tell . In the meantime , in humble hope and dependence upon the will of the Great Architect of the Universe , we feel that it is not our part to stand idl y gazing after him who has been taken from our midst ,

and that it is the duty of each one of us to apply to himself the words , " Look not mournfully on the past , it comes not back again . Wisely improve the present , it is thine . Go forth to meet the shadowy future without fear and with a manly heart . Thus ends our present duty . "

The banquet was held at the Freemasons' Tavern . Sir Knight Prower presided most ably , and his speeches were far above the ordinary type of after-dinner oratory . Sir Knight C F . Matier responded in fluent terms on behalf of "The Grand Officers . " The newly-installed sir knight , in replying to the toast of

his health , spoke in high commendation of the ceremony , and the excellent principles its ritual inculcated . Sir Knight F . VV . Driver acknowledged the toast of "The Visitors " in a few terse but pertinent sentences . The toast of "The Officers , " coupled with the names of Sir Knights Cubitt , Mason , and Scurrah , terminated the proceedings .

Baskcomb . -A
