The Prince and Princess of Wales have appointed Tuesday , the 21 st July , as the date on which they vvill visit Birmingham for . the purpose of opening the Victoria Law Courts , the foundation-stone of which vvas laid by her Majesty the Queen in 1 SS 7 .
The Prince of Wales has arranged to lay the foundationstone of the Polytechnic Institute for South-West London on Thursday , the 23 rd prox ., at 3 . 30 p . m . His Royal Highness will he accompanied on the occasion by the Princess of Wales .

To-morrow ( Saturday ) the Home Secretary vvill distribute the prizes and certificates to the children of the Metropolitan and City Police Orphanage , Strawberry Hill . There are at present in the Orphanage 150 boys and 104 girls , and in addition 800 children outside the charity receive 2 s . 6 d . each per week .

A curious fact is brought out by the Scotch census . The majority of the female part of the papulation over the male part has been reduced during the last ten years . In 1 SS 1 there were 1 , 93 6 , 098 females and 1 , 799 , 475 males . The females were thus in a majority of 136 , 623 . On the 5 th of April last there were in Scotland 2 , 081 , 642 females and 1 , 95 1 , 461 males . The females were thus in a majority of 130 , 181 . In round numbers their majority has decreased by 6500 .
The Rev . Mr . Haskett Smith will soon appear in the character of a mystic novelist , or novelist of mysticism . A curious fact is brought out by the Scotch census . The majority of the female part of the papulation over the male part has been reduced during the last ten years . In 1 SS 1 there were 1 , 93 6 , 098 females and 1 , 799 , 475 males . The females were thus in a majority of 136 , 623 . On the 5 th of April last there were in Scotland 2 , 081 , 642 females and 1 , 95 1 , 461 males . The females were thus in a majority of 130 , 181 . In round numbers their majority has decreased by 6500 .
The Rev . Mr . Haskett Smith will soon appear in the character of a mystic novelist , or novelist of mysticism . His " Romance of Mount Carmel , " as the tale is called , vvill be published by Messrs . Blackwood and Sons . The romance will contain , among other things , a picture of the life ofthe late Mr . Laurence Oliphant ' s sect at Haifa in the Lebanon . Mr . Smith was one of Laurence Oliphant ' s converts , and now , it appears , he is at the head of the Haifite community .
In the table of statistics , prepared by R . E . Nicholas R . Ruckle , in his last excellent report on Correspondence , we find that the total membership of Knights Templar in the United States is 85 , 005 , being a gain of 3596 in one year . The following figures are also given : Knighted , 6289 ,
affiliated , 104 SJ re-instated , 104 ; dimitted , 163 S ; suspended , 639 ; expelled , 55 j died , 10 S 8 . It will be observed that the loss by dimit exceeds the gain by affiliation 590 , and the army of non-contributing sir knights is thus increased to that extent . —Masonic Advocate .
