Festival Of The Royal Masonic Institution For Boys.
and £ 37 1 is . from Bro . R . Patchitt . The Province was unrepresented in February , but Bro . Robt . Patchitt as Steward for the Portland Lodge , No . 2017 , Nottinghamwho was one of tbe five on this occasion—compiled a useful £ 37 16 s . 6 d . for the Girls' School last month , while in 1890 the Province raised £ 178 ios . for this Institution . There is no more regular contributor to our Charities than
OXFORDSHIRE , though , as it can boast of only 11 lodges , its Returns , except on very special occasions , are for the most part on a modest scale . On Wednesday the Alfred Lodge , No . 340 , Oxford , and the Cherwell , No . 599 , Banbury , had two Stewards , the Apollo University , No . 357 , Oxford , four Stewards , and the Thames , No . 18 95 , Henley , one , while the Alfred and Marlborough Chapters , Nos . 340 and 1399 , were
likewise represented . The aggregate of the Returns from these 11 brethren reached £ 259 18 s ., which , added to the £ 6 g 12 s . subscribed to the Benevolent Institution in' February and the £ 9 8 is . to the Girls' School last month , gives a total for the year of £ 327 us . In 1890 the Returns to the three Festivals reached £ 385 6 s . 6 d . ; in 188 9 £ 276 ; and in 1888 £ 656 9 s . 6 d ., of which £ 568 12 s . was in respect of the Girls' Centenary .
SHROPSHIRE has taken part in nearly all the Festivals that have been held since its organisation as a separate Province , its most * successful achievements having been at the Girls ' Festival in 188 7 , when Bro . Sir Offley Wakeman , Bart ., Prov . G . M ., presided as Chairman , and the Returns reached £ ^ 1022 17 s ., and the Centenary of the same Institution , when the total was £ 770 15 s . In February it raised £ 97 17 s . for the
Benevolent Institution , and £ 145 for the Girls' School last month . On Wednesday , its contingent of six Stewards included Bro . John Bodenham , P . A . G . D . of C . England , who is a member of the Board of Management ; Bro . R . G . Venables , P . A . G . D . of C . England , D . P . G . M ., as Steward for the Lodge of the Marches , No . 611 , Ludlow ; and Bro . W . L . Southwell , acting for the Castle Lodge , No . 1621 , Bridgnorth , the aggregate for the Returns being £ 210 . Thus the total for the current year stands at £ 45 2 17 s . Bro . Viscount Dungarvan , Prov . Grand Master , Unattached , heads the list of six Stewards from
SOMERSETSHIRE , the Province generally having been taken in charge by Bro . James S . Haddon , while five of the 25 lodges were directly represented by as many brethren , including Bro . S . R . Baskett , who likewise figures in the Returns from Dorsetshire . The total raised by these was £ 493 7 s ., and as the Benevolent Institution received £ 92 12 s ., per Bro . W . J . Nosworthy , in February , and the Girls' School
£ 186 7 s . 6 d ., per Bro . F . T . Elworthy , in . May , the present year ' s aggregate stands atthe very respectable figure of £ 772 6 s . 6 d . In 18 90 the total vvas £ 548 18 s ., of which £ 358 is . was subscribed to the Boys' School and £ 190 17 s . to the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution . At the Girls' Centenary in 1888 the late Bro . Stothert ' s list amounted to £ 883 is ., the total , including other contributions from the Province , being £ 94 6 is . It is unusual—but none the less satisfactory to note—for the Province of
SOUTH WALES ( EASTERN DIVISION ) to be found taking part in all three Festivals of the year . Yet , in February , with Bro . J . R . Davies as sole Steward , the Province subscribed £ 3 80 to the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution . In May , one of its lodges , per Bro . John Munday , raised £ 7 8 15 s ., and on Wednesday another lodge—the number on the roll being iS lodges—was represented b y Bro . S . T . Jolliffe , whose list amounted to £ 20 , the total for 1891 being £ 47 8 15 s . In 1890 the Province , per Bro . J . R . Davies ,
subscribed £ 400 to the Girls' School , and in 188 9 , per Bro , John Munday , £ 323 13 s . 6 d . to the Boys' School , while in 1888 , when Bro . Sir George Elliot , Bart ., M . P ., P . G . M ., was Chairman at the Benevolent Festival , it raised £ 865 for that Institution , with a small supplementary £ 26 5 s . at the Girls' Centenary . It is evident , therefore , that South Wales East makes a practice of giving its chief , if not its entire , support to each Institution in turn . Five out of the 29 lodges in
STAFFORDSHIRE were aepresented by seven Stewards , and Bro . John Bodenham , who figures under Shropshire likewise , acted independently . The total reached £ 414 15 s ., of which , so far as we know at present , Bro . Bodenham raised £ 157 ios . and Bros . George L . Blackball and J . G . Mallins , for the Abbey Lodge , No . 624 , Burton-on-Tren :, £ 97 5 s . 6 d . At the Benevolent Festival in
February Bros . J . F . Pepper and W . H . Bailey together compiled £ 152 5 s ., while last month Bro . Thaddeus Ryder raised . £ 157 ios . for the Girls ' School , so that the aggregate for 18 91 reaches £ 724 10 s . In 18 90 the amount subscribed for the * three Charities was £ 599 , of which the Old People received £ 200 , the Boys' School £ 304 , and the Girls' School the remainder . In
188 9 it was slightly within £ 500 , but in the preceding year the Girls' Institution was favoured to the extent of £ 355 7 s . and the Boys' School to that of £ 262 ios ., the amount raised for the Old People not being ascertainable , though the Province sent up a Steward . Bro . Lord Henniker has great reason to be proud of his Province of
SUFFOLK . It has 22 lodges on its roll , but , like its nei ghbour of Norfolk , its people are mostl y engaged in agricultural pursuits . Yet thanks to the influence exerted b y his lordshi p and his worthy Deputy , Bro . the Rev . C . J . Martyn , it is among the staunchest supporters of our Institutions . This year , for instance , it raised £ 160 12 s . 6 d . for the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution in Februaryand P . 2 A . 1 . 12 s . for " Our
, Girls " in May , and on Wednesday , four of its lodges , vvith Bro . the Rev . C . J . Mait yn , Unattached , amassed a total of £ 302 7 s ., the list of Bro . J . C . Smith , as Steward for the Abbey Lodge , No . 1592 , Bury St . Edmunds , amounting to * U 6 us ., and that of Bro . Pratt , No . 1224 , to £ 78 15 s . The total , therefore , for the current year is £ 706 us . 6 d ., as compared with £ 619 13 s . 6 d . apportioned among the three Institutions in 1800 ; £ 104 . 8 17 s . 6 d . in 18 S 0 . of which
5571 13 s . 6 d . vvas paid over to the Girls' Sch ool in support of Lord Henniker ' s Chairmanshi p ; £ 1195 12 s . in 188 J—of which £ 517 12 s . was raised for the Girls ' ^ entenary ; and £ 794 16 s . in the year of the Queen ' s Jubilee , of which the Old People received £ 418 19 s ., the Girls'School £ 219 9 s ., and the Boys'School * 56 8 s . These constitute a splendid record for a Province of such moderate strength . Not since the Centenary Festival of the Girls' School in 1888 have we seen
SURREY represented to such advantage as on Wednesday , when nine of its 35 lodges sent U P Stewards , and the aggregate of their lists reached £ 292 is . 6 d ., \ he principal H ! being the ^ 75 13 s * of Bro * G * H * M - * No ; £ 6 ° 2 s- of Bro . D . Hughes , No . 2222 ; and £ 55 as . 6 d . of Bro . A . Crew , No . 1920 . In February our Stewards raised £ 115 ios . for the Old People , while four comoiled
* -95 6 s . for the Girls' School last month . Hence the total for this / ear is £ 603 g 6 dj as a g a ; nst £ 6 47 6 s . in 18 90 , and £ 49 6 4 s . in 188 9 , but in 1888 , aggregate reached £ 1298 14 s ., of which the Girls' School at its Centenary Q tamed ^ 47 18 s . ; in 1887 it vvas £ 797 13 s . 6 d ., and in 1886 , when the late Bro . _^ neral Brownrigg presided for the Girls' School , it amounted to the handsome m ° ' ^ 1829 , oi which the favoured Charity received £ 1346 . We full y anticipated that
Festival Of The Royal Masonic Institution For Boys.
SUSSEX would appear in very considerable force at this Festival as it has at those which have been held in Brighton in previous years , and our expectations have been amply fulfilled . As many as 14 out of the 27 lodges comprised within its limits and the chapter attached to a fifteenth are entered in the list , the number of brethren acting in their behalf as Stewards being 20 , the Tyrian Lodge , No . 1110 ,
Eastbourne , and the St . Cecilia , No . 16 3 6 , Brighton , being represented each of them by three , and the Royal York , No . 315 , and Royal Brunswick , No . 732 , both of Brighton , with the Gordon Lodge , No . 1726 , Bognor , by two each . In addition there were nine Stewards Unattached , including Bros . V . P . Freeman , P . G . D . of England , Prov . G . Sec ; Richard Clowes , G . Std . Br ., P . P . S . G . W ., a member of the Board of Management ; L . W . Hudson , P . P . J . G . W . ; and S . H . Soper
( Mayor of Bri ghton ) , P . P . J . G . D . The sum raised by these 29 brethren is set down as amounting to £ 740 15 s . 6 d ., the principal lists being those of Bros . Bradford , No . 732 , £ 131 5 s . ; and R . P . Clowes , No . 2201 , £ 105 . In February , the Province contributed £ 29 1 6 s . to the Festival for the Old People , and in May £ 323 18 s . 6 d . to the Girls' School , the latter being the highest Return from any single Province . Thus the sum subscribed by Sussex during tbe present year reaches , £ 1356 . Last year it raised £ 725 is ., each of the three Institutions
receiving part of the proceeds ; while in 188 9 the R . M . B . I . and this Institution obtained together £ 620 8 s . In 1888 the Girls' School at its Centenary was benefited to the extent of £ 884 9 s ., while the small contributions to the other Charities increased the year ' s total to £ 94 6 13 s . In 1885 , when its late Prov . Grand Master , Bro . Sir W . W . Burrell , Bart ., presided at the Girls' Festival , it raised £ 1850 for that Institution , and £ 1923 ios . during the year . Excellently well done , Sussex 1
WARWICKSHIRE was entered at the Festivals in February and May , but only for comparatively small amounts , three out of its 31 lodges together compiling £ 42 for the former , and two lodges , with Bro . T . R . A . rter , Unattached , £ 57 15 s . for the latter . On Wednesday five of its lodges were represented by as many brethren , of whom Bro . Arter was one , while Bro . George Beech , Past G . Std . Br . of England , Prov . G . Secretary , had charge of the Province generally , and raised a sum of £ 220 ,
the total from the five Stewards being £ 321 4 s ., and increasing the year s aggregate to £ 420 19 s . Last year it raised £ 99 15 s . for the Royal Masonic Benevolent and Boys' Institutions , and in 188 9 £ 147—the contributions of 14 Stewards from the Athol Lodge , No . 74 , Birmingham—for the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution . At the Girls' Centenary , when Bro . Lord Leigh , Prov . G . M ., was Honorary Treasurer of the Board of Stewards , Warwickshire was returned as contributed £ 1440 6 s . 6 d .
WILTSHIRE , which , by the way , has just had the misfortune to lose by resignation the services of its respected Prov . G . M ., Bro . Lord Methuen , is one of the several Provinces which give each Institution its turn of support , and only occasionally take part in the Festivals of the other two . This rule it has followed during the present year , and having been an absentee from the February and May gatherings , it sent up four Stewards on Wednesday , of whom Bro . H . C . Tombs , Past Grand Deacon of
England and P . P . G . Sec , and Miss Florence M . Tombs did duty for the Province , while Bros . George L . Palmer and George Farrington represented respectively the Lodge of Concord , No . 632 , Trowbridge , and the Lodge of Friendship and Unity , No . 1271 , Bradford-on-Avon . The sum of their lists was £ 357 5 s . 6 d ., which compares well wifh the £ 37 8 4 s . subscribed in 1890 to the two Schools , the Girls ' receiving out of it £ 335 14 s . ; the £ 168 to the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution in 188 9 , and the £ 340 8 s . 6 d . to the Girls in 1888 . The Province of
WORCESTERSHIRE has been a constant contributor at all our Anniversary Festivals for several years past , though , as it can boast of only 12 lodges , it will readily be understood that its subscriptions , except on special occasions , are on a moderate scale . In February a Steward for the whole Province and the representatives of two lodges together handed in lists amounting to £ 203 15 s . 6 d ., and in May the representative of one lodge was entered for £ 41 19 s . On this occasion four lodges had Stewards
the sum of their lists being £ 157 6 s ., and raising the year ' s aggregate to £ 403 os . 6 d . Last year the three Charities received amongst them only £ 136 ios ., but in 1889 the total was £ 365 165 ., of which this Institution had the satisfaction of securing £ 252 , while in 1888 it reached the commendable sum of £ 848 3 s ., of which £ 605 18 s . was subscribed at the Girls' Centenary . It should be noted that Bro . T . R . Arter has served as Steward at the three Festivals of this year as well as on sundry previous occasions . We have more than once pointed out in our more recent Analyses that
YORKSHIRE ( NORTH AND EAST ) has been latterly engaged in establishing an Educational Institute , the first festival in aid of which realised over £ 1000 . It is not surprising , therefore , that the contributions to the Central Charities should have been smaller in amount . However , if we take this local demand into account , we shall have every reason to be satisfied with the work done by our North and East Yorkshire brethren ,
especially during the present year , which will compare by no means unfavourably with the best among former years . In February the Old People were favoured £ 274 4 s ., while in May the Humber Lodge , No . 57 , Hull , sent up a Steward , but to the extent of his list did not appear in the Returns . On Wednesday four of its lodges were represented , two of them by one and the same brother , and the three raisedamongst them £ 177 9 s . ; the total for the whole year being £ 45 1 13 s .
Last year the Girls' and Benevolent Institutions between them received £ 113 8 s ., and the year previous the same Charities obtained £ 150 , while in 1 S 88 the year ' s total was £ 832 , out of which the Girls' Centenary had the satisfaction of receiving £ 7 63 . During the preceding five years the contributions from North and East Yorkshire averaged £ 532 per year . We were fully prepared to find
YORKSHIRE ( WEST ) taking a prominent part in the Boys' Festival this year . It has had a good deal to do with pressing forward the reorganisation of this Institution , and would naturally lend all its energies in assisting it at the first Festival held under the new regime . Moreover , it contented itself vvith giving only small contributions to the other Charities at their anniversaries , £ 400 being the sum of its
subscription to the Old People in February , and £ 315 the amount raised for the Girls ' School last month . Therefore we are not surprised at finding its contingent of Stewards 85 L strong , and the total of their lists a round £ 1650 . This gives £ 2365 for the year , which is greatl y in excess of its contributions in 18 90 and 188 9 , but in 1888 and the year of the Queen ' s Jubilee it subscribed very largely ,
the Girls School receiving £ 2700 at its Centenary Festival , while in 188 7 , the Province , besides raising £ 750 for the Old People , £ 350 for the Girls' School , and £ 600 in support of Bro . 'few ' s Chairmanship of the Boys' Festival , purchased for £ 2100 two Perpetual Presentations to the Widows' Fund of . the Royal Masonic-Benevolent Institution .
THE ISLE OF MAN , which now musters eight lodges , had one of them represented at the Girls ' Festival last month , but the Stewards' Return does not appear in the list of contributions . On Wednesday , Bro . T . H . Nesbitt , D . P . G . M ., acted as representative of the Province , and had the pleasure of handing in £ 90 . These moderate amounts from so remote a Province are very welcome .

T . R . A . rter , Unattached , £ 57 15 s . for the latter .
