Priest , was presented with a very handsome Past Master ' s jewel as a token of regard and esteem for the able manner he had performed the duties of W . M . for the past year . This was suitably acknowledged . A joining member having been proposed , after ' * Hearty good wishes " to the ne . v VV . M ., the lodge was closed .

The brethren then adjourned to the Victoria Room of the Crown Hotel , where host Bro . W . D . Miller had provided an ample banquet , which was greatly appreciated . After the usual loyal and Masonic toasts , a very pleasant evening was spent , the following musical brethren adding to the harmony : Bros . F . Golby , F . Lewis , T . B . Fourmy , F- Ward , A . Cowley , Harold Coxon , F . Cane , H . Dunaway , and G . F . Woods , with Bro . C . Winterton , R . A . M ., accompanist . During the evening Bro . Woods , Sec , presented a very interesting report of the vear ' s working , of which the following is a summary : As this is the first regular

installation meeting of the Bowen Lodge , I thought it might be interesting to the members of the lodge , and also to the visiting brethren here assembled this evening , if I gave a short report on the progress the lodge has trade during its first year of existence . For the information of those brethren who may not be so informed , I would state that several brethren who were in the habit of frequently meeting together , thought it expedient to start and create a new Masonic lodge at Chesham . A form of petition was applied for , and suitable rooms were obtained at the Crown Hotel , Chesham , as a meeting place .

The Dep . Prov . G . Master , Bro . Bowen , was asked if he would consent to the lodge bearing his name ; this he willingly agreed to , and the lodge was called the " Bowen Lodge . " A meeting was called by the W . M . designate at the request of several of the founders , and all the preliminary and necessary arrangements were made at that meeting . The petition was unanimously recommended by the Wycombe Lodge , No . 1 5 01 , duly signed by the R . W . Prov . G . Master , and forwarded to Grand Lodge . The first meeting being the consecration and the installation of its first W . M ., was held by dispensation at the Town Hall , Chesham , on July 7 th , 1900 . W . Bro . J . E . Bowen ,

Dep . Prov . G . Master , acting as W . M . and Consecrating Officer , assisted by several very prominent Buckinghamshire Freemasons , the R . W . Prov . G . Master , Lord Addington , being present . The lodje was formed with 17 founders , and W . Bro . Priest became its first Master . The first year of the Bowen Lodge has been one ol great progress , and members can certainly congratulate themselves on the success thus obtained . During the year eight meetings have been held , being three emergency meetings besides the five regular ones . The W . M . has had a most successful year , one far in excess of his and our expectations . He has had a considerable amount of work

to do , having had 14 initiates , which he has carried through in a most exemplary manner . It is an acknowledged fact that for a provincial lodge to be successful it must have local support . In this respect we are certainly to be congratulated , as five ot the initiates are residents of Chesham or the near vicinity . We also were most fortunate in having as a joining member VV . Bro . Lowdes , of Chesham , a brother who will , undoubtedly , shed lustre on the Bowen Lodge . Our Wor . Master , as the representative of the Bowen Lodge , took up the handsome sum of iioi to the Girls' Festival , the seco . id highjst list in the province .

Not a bad start tor a young lodge . Another nutter that I cannot pass over without comment is that three of our initiates went up as Stewards Unattached during the first year of their Masonic career . I am also pleased to state that th : lod ; e has been highly distinguished by three of its members having obtained Provincial rank , our first VV . M ., Bro . Priest , having been invested as Prov . G . Std . Br . ; W . Bro . Simcox as Prov . l . G . VV . ; and our Bro . Chaplain as P . G . Secretary . You have all seen our

balancesheet , which I think is highly satisfactory ; everything the lodge possesses is paid for , and we do not owe a penny , besides having a fairly good balance . In conclusion I will say that my sincere and heartfelt wish is that the Bowen Lodge will continue to prosper and become influential in diffusing the true spirit of Freemasonry in Buckinghamshire for many years . A very successful meeting was brought to a close with the Tyler ' s toist .
