THE STORY OF OUR ENGLISH BIBLE . By Mr . WALTER SCOTT . Published by Holness , Paternoster-row . Price is . 6 d . This is a marvel of accurate condensation and ably arranged chapters , published at so low a price as to be simply nominal . Though issued at such a veritable
trifle ( in cloth ) , it must not be supposed that there is little for the money , and that of trifling value . On the contrary , the work is one of the best we have met vvith in our experience ( extending over many years ) of an elementary character , that is alike suited for the scholar and the teacher vvho desire to know somewhat of the
early history and continuity of the Bible , especially prior to the invention of printing , and thereafter as to the great and important translations from Tyndale ' s time to the revision of late years . All useful points are duly attended to in a most interesting manner , the result being a capitally-printed volume , full of numerous
details not easily procurable by the class so carefully catered for ; and assuredly no one need now be without a reliable manual of the Bible , historical , textual , and chronological , in a compact form , at " a low price , and yet accurate withal . Profit could not have entered into the calculations of either author or publisher .
"MEN AND WOMEN OF THE DAY , " BY MR . BARRAUD .
Mr . Barraud ' s "Men and Women of the Day" becomes enhanced in value as time goes on . As a book of reference for the library it is most useful , and equally so as a handsome ornament for the drawing room , wherewith to beguile away a quarter of an hour , or to entertain friends with at afternoon tea .
Among the latest portraits vvhich have appeared are those of Mr . and Mrs . H . M . Stanley , and both are splendid portraits . That of the lady is from a negative taken by Miss Dorothy Tennant ' s sister , Mrs . Myers , who is well-known as a very successful amatuer photographer . From the letter-press vvhich accompanies
the pictures , vve learn that Miss Tennant was secretly engaged to Mr . Stanley ere he went on his last and perilous journey . This has long been a rumour , but vve suppose the monographs are submitted to the originals before publication , hence we take it to be authenticated . Surgeon Parke and Lieut . Stairs
are also amongst the celebrities . Mr . Forbes Robertson , Mr . John Hare , and Mr . Rider Haggard are speaking portraits , and amongst the ladies who have recently appeared as women of the day are Mrs . John Strange Winter , Miss Winifred Emery , and Mrs . Jopling . The current number contains panel portraits of Miss Ellicott , the talented musical daughter of the
Bishop of Gloucester and Bristol , Mr . Holman Hunt , and Mr . William Black . We think additional interest would take place if the facsimile autograph vvere appended to each likeness . The photograph published in this journal some time ago of the late Cardinal Newman is said to be the best he ever had taken . It ought to be in demand now .

The dinner svas served in the manner for svhich the Albion is famous , after svhich the AV . M . proposed the usual loyal and Masonic toasts , referring in feeling terms to the late

Stallard had proved himself one of the best Masters that had presided over the lodge . He had
done his svork thoroughly and svell , and had won the esteem and regard of the brethren . Of that they had given evidence in unanimously voting him a Past Master ' s jesvel . He asked them to join svith him , cordially and heartily , in drinking thc health of the AV . M . The Worshipful Master , in reply , thanked the brethren very sincerely for the kind expression of their goodsvill .
When he undertook the duties of the chair , it svas in faith that , svith the assistance of the ofiicers , he should be able to conduct the business of the lodge and the ceremonies in a satisfactory manner , and svith the hope that the brethren vvould endorse the services rendered with their approval . The AVorshipful Master elect , Bro . S . J . Groner , thanked the brethren sincerely for their reception of the toast , and for the great honour done him in electing him to preside
over them . He was but a young Mason , but he should endeavour to fulfil the duties of the chair svith credit to himself , the lodge , and the Craft . "The Immediate Past Master" vvas next proposed by the AV . M ., who said that all present were svell acquainted svith his good qualities . He svas alsvays ready svith assistance , especially at a ball or summer outing ; his all-round
excellence svas sufficient to ensure a hearty reception to the toast . The I . P . M ., Bro . J . F . Bell , thanked the AV . M . for the kind expressions of feeling , and the brethren for their reception of the same . The Cripplegate svas his mother lodge , and he had its interests at heart . He felt that he had not been altogether all that he might have been as AV . M .

Perseverance Lodge ( No . 1743 ) . —The installation meeting of this excellent lodge svas held at Anderton's Hotel , on Saturday , the 13 th inst . Bro . AV . Smith , the AV . M ., vvas unfortunately absent , suffering from a serious illness , and in his absence the lodge svas opened by Bro . P . M . Leins , the Treasurer , supported by Bros . C . J . Fox , S . W . and AV . M . elect ; C . Salter , J . VV . ; and the assistant officers .
The minutes ot the previous meeting having been read and confirmed , the report of the Audit Committee ( which had been previously circulated among the members ) having been taken as read , ss'as received and adopted upon motion . The AV . M . in the chair then proceeded to pass to the Second Degree his son , Bro . A . E . Leins , and Bro . A . E . Pettit , members of the lodire , and also Bro . Chas . Ossvald
Haas , a member of the Royal Hanover Lodge , No . 1777 , on the requisition of the Master of that lodge , a svork svhich Bro . P . M . Leins performed svith his usual impressiveness . Bro . C . J . Fox , the AV . M . elect , svas then presented to receive the benefit of installation , whereupon the VV . M . in the chair , after the usual formalities had been observed , proceeded to obligate him as VV . M . elect . A Board
of Installed Masters vvas formed , in whose presence Bro . Fox was formally installed into the chair of K . S . according to ancient custom . The W . M . then installed the ollicers , as follows : Bros . Salter , S . VV . ; Lovell , J . W . ; Leins , P . M ., Treas . ; Ferry , Sec ; Squire , S . D !; O'Brien , I . G . ; Thompson , D . C . ; AVall , Asst . D . C . ; Emile Belhomme
and 'Tyrrell , Stsvds . ; George , Org . ; and Lane , Tyler . Bro . John Stait svas appointed , but not being present his investiture svas deferred . On this part of the ceremony being completed Bro . Leins brought the work of installation to a close by reciting in a highly impressive manner the addresses to the W . M . and his principal officers , and the oration to the Iodge upon the principles of
Freemasonry . The lodge was then closed , and the brethren and their guests proceeded to the banquet-room , svhere the hospitality of the lodge svas exercised in true Perseverance form . At the conclusion of the banquet the toast list svas proceeded svith without delay . Bro . Fox proved himself an admirably genial host , and time svas not cut to svaste by
speeches of undue length . The toasts ol " ihe Queen and the Craft" and "The M . W . Grand Master" having been briefly disposed of , the AV . M . said a fesv appropriate svords upon the loss the Craft had sustained by the death of the Earl of Carnarvon , and then the toast of " The Deputy Grand Master , the Earl of Lathom , and the rest of the Grantl Officers , Present and Past , " svas proposed from the chair and cordially responded
to by the brethren . Bro . Leins , P . M ., Treas ., then took the gavel , and said that hc rose svith a great deal of pleasure , but at the same time svith a great deal of regret , to propose "The Health of the VV . M . " It svas a pleasure to him personally to propose that toast , but that pleasure svas tempered svith regret , because the I . P . M ., to svhom the privilege belonged , svas not present . He svas sure that all present svould share his

regret that their dear Bro . Smith now lay stricken down on a bed of sickness and unable to help himself . He vvas sure , too , they all joined with him in hoping that God vvould be merciful to him nosv and hereafter . And in assuming Bro . Smith's duties now he did so to express Bro . Smith's goodwill as well as his osvn to their AV . M . He ( Bro . Leins ) had initiated the Worshipful Master , and had also installed
him , and he trusted that he might be enabled to discharge the duties of his office to his osvn satisfaction and to the satisfaction of all the brethren . Bro . Fox had nosv been svith them for 10 years , during svhich time he had proved himself a perfect gentleman and a brother vvho svould do anything in his posver to further . the interests not only of his osvn lodge , but of Freemasonry generally . He
did not think he could say much more if he remained on his legs for an hour or tsvo , for svhen a brother had endeared himself as Bro . Fox had done , there svas no more to say but to hope that God might bless him , and that he might have a happy year of office . The toast was drunk svith all the honours , and Bro . Fox , said , in reply , that he responded with gratitude to the very
kind expressions used in proposing the toast , and svas very much impressed by the cordiality expressed in the Treasurer ' s speech . He had to thank the brethren for placing him in the position of Master . It vvas the highest honour the lodge could bestow on one of its members , and he svould strive to perform the duties of the chair to the satisfaction of the brethren . Bro . Fox added that he must also thank Bro .
Leins for the svay in svhich he had installed him , by vvhich he ( Bro . Fox ) had been greatly impressed . He owed a great debt to Bro . Leins , vvho had initiated him into Masonry , and had now crosvned the good svork by installing him in the chair . Looking back on his Masonic career , it seemed to him that he had enjoyed an unbroken line of friendship , but vvhen in the future he should look back that occasion would stand out as one of the briahtest spots in that favoured
career . The Worshipful Master then proceeded to propose "The Health of the Visitors , " svith svhich he associated the names of Bros . Martindale , Harvey , Gilbert , and Lasvrence . In responding to the toast , Bro . Gilbert led the svay , and svas followed by Bros . Lasvrence , Roberts , Harvey , Johnson , Gammon , and Martindale .
Bro . Fox said the next toast on the list svas " The Health of their esteemed Immediate Past Master . " He felt extreme regret that Bro . Smith could not take his place among them on that occasion . All he could do svas to express an earnest hope , in svhich he vvas sure they all participated , that Bro . Smith might be vvith them when they met on the next occasion . They could not do anything more at the present
meeting . Without resuming his seat the W . M . said that the next toast svas a very important one , "The Installing Master , " svhich he asked the brethren to drink vvith all heartiness . Bro . Leins , in returning thanks , asked the brethren to rally round their AV . M . and support him heartily during his year of office . He svished he could have performed the
duty of Installing Master more to his own satisfaction . He svho should have performed the ceremony had been unable to attend , but he ( Bro . Leins ) , svhile he svas doing the work , could not dismiss the idea that Bro . Smith svas at the door ; and the idea had interfered with his svork . If , hosvever , he had performed the ceremony to the satisfaction of the brethren he was amply recompensed .
"The Health of the Treasurer and Secretary , " svhich svas next proposed , svas responded to by Bro . Ferry . The toast to "The Officers of the Lodge" vvas acknowledged by the Senior and Junior Wardens . Bros . Kearney and Mitchell responded on behalf of "The Past Masters of the Lodge , " and then Bro . Leins proposed "The Masonic Press , " after vvhich the Tyler's toast
brought a very successful meeting to a close . The list of visitors included Bros . Thomas Powell , 21 S 2 ; J . AV . Martindale , 16 S 5 ; R . Overy , 19 S 4 ; J . Walton , 1360 ; Alfred Wiseman , 1764 ; H . T . Battams , 1777 ; AV . C . B . England , 16 S 2 ; J . Roberts , P . M . 65 ; C . O . Haas , 1777 ; Chas . Gammon 704 ; E . C . MasseyP . M .

The brethren afterwards recognised the
loss the lodge had sustained by the death of tsvo of its founders by an appropriate vote of sympathy , and svhen some other Masonic business had been transacted , they closed the lodge , and adjourned to Freemasons' Tavern to a banquet , which did great credit to the Lodge Committee svhich selected it .
Under Bro . Turle Lee an attractive programme of music svas provided to be given betsveen the toasts , and svith the aid of Mr . Sutton Shepley , Bro . VV . T . Perrins , Miss Annie Matthews , Bro . Thorn , Miss Alice Bocquet , and Bro . Culver this portion of the entertainment fitly harmonised svith the unbounded hospitality of the lodge . The toasts were given in regular order , "The Oueen and the Craft" and " The M . W . Grand Master" taking precedence .
