Degree . The chapter was then closed , and the companions sat down to an admirably served banquet , for the success of which all credit is due to Comp . Mason , whose catering was perfect . The cloth having- been cleared , the usual loyal and Grand Chapter toasts were honoured . " The Health of Earl

Amherst , Grand Superintendent of the Province of Kent , " followed , and was drunk with the utmost enthusiasm . The M . E . Z . then said there was another toast for them to do honour to before they indulged in the soothing smoke , that needed no apology on his part for introducing it to their notice . It was one that always received at the hands of both the Pattison Lodge and Chapter a cordial

and hearty reception . It was that of their esteemed "Comp . Eastes , G . H . of the Province of Kent , and the rest of tha Prov . Grand Officers , Present and Past . " Their chapter had been especially honoured with the collars of Giand Chapter , and they were proud to see such an array present that night . He therefore asked them to drink the toast with enthusiasm .

Comp . Sweney having responded , The I . P . Z ., Comp . Hobson , proposed the toast of "The M . E . Z ., " and said that now their Comp . Cook had passed the ordeal of a first exaltation , it was only right they should compliment him upon tbe admirable and almost faultless manner in which he had worked the ritual , lt was notonly satisfactory to the Past Principals , but must be very

gratifying to the companions to know that the prestige of the chapter was deposited in such good keeping , and showed how deeply and well their M . E . Z . had studied to make himself proficient . He simply expressed their opinion when he said that he was delighted with the manner in which the ritual had been rendered that night . He trusted their M . E . Z . would have a good year of office , and assured him

of their hearty support . The M . E . Z ., in response , said it was a fact that no sooner was a brother placed in the chair of their lodge , or a companion in that of their chapter , than he was expected to be perfect in the working of the ceremonies attached to either ; that being so , he was fully aware that he had to render their ritual that night before excellent critics and

good judges , and they , being critics and judges , were jjound , through the mouth of their I . P . Z ., or at least one or more of the P . Z . 's , to give their verdict for or against him . Now , Comp . Hobson had said that he ( Comp . Cooke ) had done his duty to their satisfaction , and had worked the Pattison ritual in a manner worthy of their approval . He thanked him for it , and them for their hearty response to

the toast . He had no more to say , but that he should endeavour to prove himself , to the end of his term of office , worthy of their confidence and commendation . The toast of "Comps . H . and J ., the 2 nd and 3 rd Principals " having been drunk , Comp . Roberts said they

all knew how hard their esteemed ist Principal had worked , both for that chapter and Freemasonry in general , while a more genial and kind-hearted brother never lived . As for himself , he had donehis best , and as time went on , bringing with it higher duties and heavier responsibilities , he should continue to deserve their approval by every means in his

power . Comp . Palmer said it gave him a great amount of pleasure to be their 3 rd Principal , because of the opportunity of being with them , and seeing that by endeavouring to do one's duty , the approbation of the companions was freely given as a reward . It also gave him a slight amount of pain , as they might imagine from the basso prof undo tone

of his voice . That , however , he trusted to get rid of before their next meeting , when he hoped to do his work worthy of the chapter ana his position as Third Principal . Comp . Hobson , who was in his several offices a splendid worker , in responding for "The Past Principals , " comically assured the companions that he was exceedingly glad that he had arrived at the position of a Past Princioal ,

and also , amid much laughter , that now he had so arrived , they would find him one of the best among them , especially as the work there was put out . Comp . Butter , by special request , proposed the toast of "The Exaltee , " and in so doing said he had known Comp . Chasteaneuf from his boyhood , and had always taken a great interest in him and his welfare , and had , therefore ,

many opportunities of noticing his sterling qualities and excellent conduct , and was proud of helping him on in life , and more so of proposing him as a member of that chapter . He felt sure they would find Comp . Chasteaneuf to be a gentleman , a good Mason , and an excellent Royal Arch Mason . Their Comp , Chasteaneuf had a history—a family history—that was in some respects both peculiar

and interesting . One of his ancestors was Court physician to the unfortunate Louis XVI ., in 17 SS . At that time the Sans Culottes of Paris had a peculiar way of testifying their hatred of all things courtly and aristocratic ; and so , in one of their playful moods , they strung up poor Physician Chasteaneuf to a lamp-post , a la lantern , as they called it . Comp . Chasteaneuf's great grandfather

fought with the , French ( as a midshipman ) at the Battle of Trafalgar , and was taken prisoner there , and brought to England , where he ultimately married , and founded a family , of which Comp . Chasteaneuf was one of the results . Another result was that they had that night exalted into Royal Arch Masonry a most excellent Mason , and he only wanted the companions knowing Comp . Chasteaneuf to admire him as much as he did . He

therefore had great pleasure in asking them to drink his health with all the cordiality in their power . Comp . Chasteaneuf having responded , The toast of "The Officers , " eloquently responded to by Comp . Lawson , and the Janitor's toast concluded the proceedings , which were enlivened by some splendid singing by Comp . Hobson , Mr . Mason , jun ., and others . Bro . F . Tyler presided at the piano .
