THE ANGLO-AMERICAN LODGE . To the Editor of the " Freemason . " Dear Sir and Brother , Your account taken from the American papers of our visit to America has been most gratifying * to both of us , also your notices of the same . They convey but a faint idea of our generous and cordial reception , which will ever

be a pleasant remembrance . We can truly say that nothing but brotherly kindness was manifested from the time of landing until we re-embarked . To the Grand Master of Maryland ( Bro . Thomas J . Shryock ) , the Grand Officers , Present and Past , the Baltimore brethren , Bro . C . E . Meyer and the Philadelphian brethren , and the Grand Secretary of New York ( Bro . Ehlers ) , on behalf of the Anglo-American Lodge , we

PROCEEDINGS OF THE GRAND LODGE OF MAINE , 188 S . Portland : Stephen Berry , Printer . 1888 . This is a most complete and exhaustive report of the proceedings of the Grand Lodge of Maine at its 69 th Annual Communication in May last , supplemented by a number of other reports , the most important of which are

the statistical , which exhibit the present condition of Freemasonry in this jurisdiction , and the report on Foreign Correspondence . The whole forms a substantial Svo volume of 320 pages , of which the report on Correspondence occupies about 1 S 0 pages . As regards the proceedings at the Annual Communication , without concerning ourselves about matters of purely local interest , we may

state generally that the brethren met under very encouraging circumstances , Bro . Frank E . Sleeper , M . W . G . M ., presided in person , and was well supported by the Grand Officers , both Present and Past , as well as by the representatives of 172 out of the 187 lodges on the roll . The Grand Master in his . customary address referred to the principal occurrences of the past year , noting with regret

the decease of several brethren of good standing , among whom were mentioned Bro . T . J . Murray , a Past Grand Master , Bro . Joseph R . Bodwell , Governor of the State of Maine , and the Emperor William of Germany . _ He congratulated the brethren on the flourishing condition of the Craft under his jurisdiction , and expressed himself hopefully as regards its future prospects . The G . Secretary's

report was very satisfactory . From the statement of accounts submitted by the G . Treasurer , it appeared that after defraying the expenses of the year there remained a balance of cash in hand or on deposit of over Sooo dollars , and a total of investments amounting to 22 , 600 dollars . The Grand Secretary ' s report on returns shows a total membership of 20 , 261 , as compared with 20 , 218 in 1887 . The

following brethren were elected to fill the principal offices in Grand Lodge for the ensuing year , namely : Bros , Frank E . Sleeper , M . W . G . M . ; Albro E . Chace , Dep . G . M . ; L . M . Kenniston , S . G . W . ; Samuel G . Davis , J . G . W . ; Frederick Fox , G . Treas . ; and Ira Berry , G . Sec . Oa one of the days of meeting the work of the Third Degree was exemplified by the Master and officers of Ancient Landmark Lodge , No . 17 , and a vote of thanks

unanimously accorded to them for the exemplary manner in which they performed the task . On the third and last day of the Communication , Bro . Sleeper was re-installed as G . Master for the new year by Bro . Josiah H . Drummond , Past G . Master , after which the Report on Correspondence , in the compilation of which the latter had taken the chief part , was presented , and Grand Lodge closed with the usual formalities . The reports , which are included in these proceedings , contain a mass of instructive reading .

The annual conclave at which the proceedings herein described took place was held at the Masonic Hall , Portland , on the 2 nd and 3 rd May last . Sir Knight William J . Burnham , Grand Commander , presided , and was well

supported by Sir Knight Joseph A . Locke , Deputy Grand Commander , and the Grand Officers generally , as well as by the representatives of 15 out of the i < 5 commanderies on the roll . The Grand Commander , in his address , described the principal events of the past year , and the principal Grand Officers handed in their reports , that of the Grand Treasurer containing a very satisfactory

statement of account , while the report on returns showed a total membership of 2065 . The following were elected and installed as principal Grand Officers for the ensuing year , namely : Sir Knights Joseph A . Locke , G . Commander ; Edwin M . Fuller , Deputy G . Treas . ; and Ira

Berry , G . Recorder . A vote of thanks to Sir Knight Burnham for his services as Grand Commander during the past year and the presentation of the report on correspondence by Sir Knight Stephen Berry brought the proceedings to a conclusion . In addition to the report on Correspondence are a number of statistical tables and returns , which contain the fullest information as to the condition of the Templar Order in Maine , and will be found valuable by those who give their attention to this branch of Masonic study ..

Treasurer , it appeared that after defraying the expenses of the year there remained a balance of cash in hand or on deposit of over Sooo dollars , and a total of investments amounting to 22 , 600 dollars . The Grand Secretary ' s report on returns shows a total membership of 20 , 261 , as compared with 20 , 218 in 1887 . The

following brethren were elected to fill the principal offices in Grand Lodge for the ensuing year , namely : Bros , Frank E . Sleeper , M . W . G . M . ; Albro E . Chace , Dep . G . M . ; L . M . Kenniston , S . G . W . ; Samuel G . Davis , J . G . W . ; Frederick Fox , G . Treas . ; and Ira Berry , G . Sec . Oa one of the days of meeting the work of the Third Degree was exemplified by the Master and officers of Ancient Landmark Lodge , No . 17 , and a vote of thanks

unanimously accorded to them for the exemplary manner in which they performed the task . On the third and last day of the Communication , Bro . Sleeper was re-installed as G . Master for the new year by Bro . Josiah H . Drummond , Past G . Master , after which the Report on Correspondence , in the compilation of which the latter had taken the chief part , was presented , and Grand Lodge closed with the usual formalities . The reports , which are included in these proceedings , contain a mass of instructive reading .
