Chapitre La France ( No . 2060 ) . — This chapter held its usual meeting on Monday , the 16 th inst ., and had a narrow escape out of an unfortunate contretemps . Chapter had been summoned for five o ' clock on the anticipation of two candidates , and the officers had scarcely entered the room when messages arrived announcing that both candidates were unwell , and unable to come , also that the Principal Sojourner had not yet

returned from France . There was a little hesitation as to what should be done , when Comp . St . Clair suggested that if the companions would grant him their indulgence he would act as Principal Sojourner . Comp . Cubitt consented to represent the candidate and the ceremony of exaltation was thereupon gone through . Comp . St . Clair acquitted himself in a masterly manner of his impromptu duties , while the work of the M . E . Z ., Comp . F . Mead , was

" In La France Chapter , possibly more than in any other , the members had to congratulate themselves on the support of Grand Oliicers , many of whom are founders and ordinary members of the chapter . Br ., said that having observed that excellent as was the French of the English born companions , their facility with the language was at least equalled by that of the French born companions in English , he thought it better to respond in his mother tongue as they might have a difficulty in understanding him , his French being rather that of Stratford atte le Bow than of Paris . He drew attention to the circumstance that

the three First Principals of the Chapter La FYance were also Principals of his mother chapter " The British , " and the two together might be taken to represent a veritable belle alliance . In Arch Masonry , Grand Office had been conferred on two of the P . Principals , and it might safely be prophesied that a third would be honoured before long . He felt justified in saying that the welfare of this particular chapter was very dear to all members of Grand Chapter ,
