BRO . J . HEATLEY , No . 1167 . On Saturday morning , the 20 th instant , Bro . James Heatley , one of the oldest tradesmen of Alnwick , died at his residence in Belvedere-terrace , Alnwick . The deceased brother was one of the public men in the town , having a public career of over 30 years . He was Secretary of the Mechanic' Institute from 1868 to 18 7 8 , then being made Vice-President of that society . He was elected member of the Alnwick Local Board of Health in 1868 , in 1 HS 5 was appointed Chairman , and was a member of the Urban Council at the time of his death ; he was a
member of the Alnwick Board of Guardians for a number of years , being twice elected Chairman of that body , and a member of the Alnwick Burial Board nearly from its formation . He was manager of the Ragged School when it was in existence , member and Chairman of the Alnwick Gas Company , a Governor of the Infirmary ; and was also a prominent member of the Berwickshire Naturalists ' Club . He was the oldest member of the Alnwick Lodge , No . 11017 , being one of three who originally formed the lodge . He also held provincial honours in the Provincial Grand Lodge of Northumberland , and was an enthusiastic Mason . As

a business man , he was well known from the Humber to the Forth as being the manufacturer of the celebrated Alnwick tobacco , the business at one time in this respect being one of the largest in the North of England . To this business he succeeded on the death of his father . On the formation of the Volunteer Force he at once enrolled himself , and ultimately became lieutenant in the Alnwick Rifle Company , but left the corps in 1870 . He was an elder and prominent member of
St . James ' s Presbyterian Church . A like office he also held in Lisburn-street Presbyterian Church previous to its being merged into St . James ' s . In politics he was a staunch Liberal , taking a most active part in every election since the earl y 50 ' s , and was practically the politician who introduced Sir Edward Grey on his successful campaign in 1 SS 4 . The deceased brother was 6 S years of age , and leaves a widow and grown up family .

Watkins , of Newport , Monmouthshire , who in his day had done good service to Masonry and its Institutions . He was initiated on the 19 th October , 1 S 64 , in the Grove Lodge , No . 410 , Ewell , but two years later , having in the meantime migrated to Newport , he joined the Silurian Lodge , No . 471 , and remained a subscribing member for upwards of iS years . In April , 1872 , he
became a founder and first Junior Warden of the Albert Edward Lodge , No . 1429 , and the following year was elected and installed W . M . ; while in 1886 he was honoured with ihe appointment of Prov . S . G . W . of Monmouthshire . In Royal Arch Masonry he was P . Z . of the St . Woolos Chapter , No . 683 , Newport , and Past Prov . G . Treasurer , and in Mark Masonry a P . M . Keystone Lodge , No . 109 , Newport—having occupied the chair of A . in 18 7 6—and P . P . S . G .
Warden . He was a Vice-President of both our Schools , a Life Governor of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution , and had in all served as Festival Steward for one or other of them on eight different occasions , and it will be in the recollection of many that his little boy , Master Willie Watkins , filled the same office at the Girls' School Centenary in iSSS , and was a Vice-President of that Institution and of the Boys' School , while his other children were also Life Governors .
