They only want a very small corner of it , and if , says Sir Edward , they cannot arrange for the purchase of this , they will go elsewhere . If this good news be true , lovers of our national sport need have no fear for the safety of " Lord ' s . "
On Saturday last Bro . the Earl of Wharncliffe forwarded a memorial bearing the signatures of all the leading Egyptologists and lovers of art in this country to the Marquess of Salisbury , praying his lordship to use his good offices with the Khedive of Egypt to appoint some official
who shall have power to protect the ancient monuments of that country from being broken up and used for building material . We trust the memorial will have the desired effect , and that some energetic official will be appointed who will put a stop to this vandalism .

Lee Bapty , general manager of the Jamaica Exhibition , who arrived at Jamaica by the Royal Mail steam packet Atrato on the 28 th ult ., reports finding the building in an exceedingly advanced state , and that there is no doubt whatever that all will be completed in ample time to admit of the opening taking place as originally arranged for the 27 th January , on which date Prince George of Wales will perform the opening ceremony at 12 noon . Royal Highness will , as already announced , be accompanied to Kingston by the ships of the North American and West Indian ^ Squadrons and the foreign war vessels in these waters . An accident has recently occurred to one of the no-ton breech-looking guns with which H . M . ' s battleship Sanspareil is armed . The ship had sailed from Chatham to the North Sea for gunnery practice , and three rounds from the gun had been fired when it was found that one of the bands was fractured , andthatithad moved from its position . The gun was loaded for a fourth round when the discovery was made .
Prince and Princess Christian and their daughters , the Princesses Victoria and Louise of Schleswig-Holstein , arrived at Cumberland Lodge , Windsor , on their return from Berlin on Monday . The petition of a number of Past Masters in Natal to H . R . H . the M . W . G . M ., praying for a warrant of constitution for a Moveable Lodge of Installed Masters , has been refused on the ground that it is contrary to the Book of Constitutions , the regulations of Grand Lodge , and the usages of the Craft . An address beautifully engraved on vellum was presented to Bro . Augustus Harris , one of the Sheriffs of the City of London , and Grand Treasurer , on the 18 th inst ., by a deputation from the Tradesmen ' s Benevolent Society , which was established in 18 5 S , and had done good service in
aiding the poor . The address fully recognised the generous support which Bro . Harris had given to the society , and congratulated him on his appointment to the office of Sheriff . Bro . Harris in a few well chosen words expressed his acknowledgments .

The German Emperor has expressed his determination to visit England again next year . He has instructed Count Eulenburg to report to him on the prospects of the German Exhibition to be held in London during 1891 , and shows the keenest interest in the project now that the leaders of art and industry in England have joined the German Committee and intend to exhibit .
The South Australian Freemason has the following : "The London Freemason kindly recommends our New South Wales brethren to elect Lord Jersey as their Grand Master . As there is a vacany in the Pro Grand Mastership of England , our English brethren could not do better than elect Lord Carrington to it—he would fill it ably . " Our namesake forgets that the appointment of Pro Grand Master is in the hands of the Grand Master , and is not an elective office .

It appears , however , that now a basis of union between the Grand Lodge and this older lodge has been agreed upon , and that St . Scotland as No . 1 ( 2 ) . The records of the lodge , it is stated , date in almost unbroken sequence from December 26 , 1674 . There are great rejoicings in the Grand Lodge of Scotland in consequence of this union . An accident has recently occurred to one of the no-ton breech-looking guns with which H . M . ' s battleship Sanspareil is armed . The ship had sailed from Chatham to the North Sea for gunnery practice , and three rounds from the gun had been fired when it was found that one of the bands was fractured , andthatithad moved from its position . The gun was loaded for a fourth round when the discovery was made .
Prince and Princess Christian and their daughters , the Princesses Victoria and Louise of Schleswig-Holstein , arrived at Cumberland Lodge , Windsor , on their return from Berlin on Monday . They were received on reaching Windsor station by the Mayor , who handed to their Royal Highnesses the congratulations of himself and the Corporation on the approaching marriage of their daughter .
Special Envoys from the Court of Hague were presented to her Majesty the Queen at Windsor Castle on Thursday , the iSth inst ., and announced the accession to the throne of Holland of Queen Wilhelmina . Bro ^ Sir James Fergusson , Bart ., M . P ., Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs , was present at the introduction of the Envoys . The visitors and the Netherlands Minister were received by the Prince of W ales on the following day .
We are informed that preparations are being made for immediately erecting to the north of the main building of the Imperial Institute a permanent exhibition gallery of two floors , connecting those portions of the east and west arcades which are leased to the Institute . Lord Carrington , late Governor of New South Wales , has been appointed by the Prince of Wales a member of the Institute .
The petition of a number of Past Masters in Natal to H . R . H . the M . W . G . M ., praying for a warrant of constitution for a Moveable Lodge of Installed Masters , has been refused on the ground that it is contrary to the Book of Constitutions , the regulations of Grand Lodge , and the usages of the Craft . The only way in which the petitioners can attain their object is to establish a lodge of instruction similar to the Lodge of Emulation in London . —South African Freemason .
An address beautifully engraved on vellum was presented to Bro . Augustus Harris , one of the Sheriffs of the City of London , and Grand Treasurer , on the 18 th inst ., by a deputation from the Tradesmen ' s Benevolent Society , which was established in 18 5 S , and had done good service in
aiding the poor . The address fully recognised the generous support which Bro . Harris had given to the society , and congratulated him on his appointment to the office of Sheriff . Bro . Harris in a few well chosen words expressed his acknowledgments .
In connection with Dr . Barnardo ' s Homes a series of festivities have been arranged for Christmas Day . At 1 . 30 there will be the dinner at the Home in Stepney Causeway to the boys now resident in the London Homes ; and at 3 . 30 there will be a dinner to rough lads from the common lodging-houses at , the Edinburgh Castle . At 9 . 15 a hot
supper given to the inmates of the two night shelters for young women and girls at Flower and Dean-street and Dock-street . On Saturday , the 10 th January , the holiday festival takes place at the Boys' Home , Stepney Causeway . Earl Stanhope presided at the annual general meeting of the Holmesdale Cottage Hospital , Sevenoaks , on Monday afternoon , and spoke in high terms of the value of the institution .
There have only been two occasions during the last 30 years when London has enjoyed so severe a frost so long continued as that of the last few days . Those two occasions were both in January , in 186 7 and 1881 . The " Madras Masonic Review " thus sums up the news of the month in that district : " There seems to be nothing

The Royal Alfred Aged Merchant Seamen's Institution assists brave British Seamen when they become aged , destitute and too often friendless . The usual New Year ' s entertainment to the Old Folks at the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution at Croydon will take place on Wednesday , 7 th January , 1891 . A special second-class saloon carriage will be reserved by the 12 . 52 train from Charing Cross , or 1 . 4 from Cannon-street for those who have been invited to be present .
On Wednesday night , the 17 th inst ., the brethren of the Solomon Lodge held a conversazione and dance in the Dalrymple Hall , Fraserburgh . About 80 couples accepted invitations , and the hall was very prettily decorated . During the evening songs were sung by various local ladies and gentlemen , and the gathering proved a great success .
A handsome tablet as a memorial to the late Major-General Sir Howard Elphinstone , commanding the western district , who was drowned off Ushant some time since while on a voyage to Madeira , is now being erected in the garrison chapel at Devonport , and will probably be unveiled early in January , when it is expected that the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh will take part in the ceremony .
On Thursday , the 18 th inst ., at the monthly meeting of the Anchor Lodge , No . 1337 , of Ancient Free and Accepted Masons , Bro . Charles Waistell , P . M ., presiding , Bro . A . Bell , S . W ., was unanimously elected W . M . for the ensuing year , while on the motion of Bro . Stead , P . M ., seconded by Bro . Palliser , P . M ., Bro . M . Walmsley , P . M ., was reelected Treasurer of the lodge .
The German Emperor has expressed his determination to visit England again next year . He has instructed Count Eulenburg to report to him on the prospects of the German Exhibition to be held in London during 1891 , and shows the keenest interest in the project now that the leaders of art and industry in England have joined the German Committee and intend to exhibit .
The South Australian Freemason has the following : "The London Freemason kindly recommends our New South Wales brethren to elect Lord Jersey as their Grand Master . As there is a vacany in the Pro Grand Mastership of England , our English brethren could not do better than elect Lord Carrington to it—he would fill it ably . " Our namesake forgets that the appointment of Pro Grand Master is in the hands of the Grand Master , and is not an elective office .
It may not be generally known that up to the present there has been one lodge ( St . John , Melrose ) in Scotland which has always maintained its independence of the Grand Lodge of Scotland . It appears , however , that now a basis of union between the Grand Lodge and this older lodge has been agreed upon , and that St . John ' s , Melrose , will shortly take its place on the roll of the Grand Lodge of
Scotland as No . 1 ( 2 ) . The records of the lodge , it is stated , date in almost unbroken sequence from December 26 , 1674 . There are great rejoicings in the Grand Lodge of Scotland in consequence of this union . Concurrent jurisdiction , although recommended for the colonies , is not appreciated in Scotland itself by the Grand Lodge . —South Australian Freemason .
