THE CHEADLE RAILWAY MINERAL AND L \ ND

COMPANY ( LIMIThD ) . We have been favoured with a copy of the prospectus of this new company , and from the description it contains of the purposes for which the said company has been established , and the locality in which its operations will be conducted , as well as from the testimony furnhhed by the experts in support of its statements , there seem to us to be

good grounds for anticipating that it will prove to be both a valuable and a remunerative project . The purposes are said to be twofold—firstly , to construct a line of railway about four miles long f 10 m Cheadle in Staffordshire , through Draycott-le-Moors , to Cresswell Station on the main line of the North Staffordshire Railway from Derby to Crewe , and by so doing , to develop the mineral resources of the Cheadle

and Draycott Coal and Iron Field ; and secondly , to open up and develop a valuable building estate at Totmanslow . The area of the country to be traversed is well populated , while its mineral wealth is immense , the Cheadle Basin being estimated to contain 1 S 0 million tons of coal , of which about one-third has been secured by the Company . As regards the minerals under about Soo acres of land in the

richest part of the Basin , the Company has arranged to acquire the rights to them free from royalty , rent charge , or wayleave of any kind , while as regards those under an additional 465 acies , it will secure these at very moderate royalties . It is estimated that from the 1 > cal sales of house coal only , there will result an annual profit of £ 4000 , and when the railway is opened , and the building sites

covered with houses , this revenue will of necessity be very largely increased . The Company have also purchased the freehold of over 100 acres ot building land at Totmanslow , near the proposed station , but well removed from the seat of the mining operations , and admirably adapted for residential purposes , on hilly ground , and adjoining the main road Irom Stoke-upon-Trent to Uttoxeter , so that it

will be only some five miles from the district of the collieries and potteries , with its teeming population and vast industrial resources . Thus the Company will bring its building estate into immediate communication with the Potteries , and the railway by which this will be effected will at the same time enable it to transport its coal and iron to the London and ether markets . In short , the scheme looks

like one that cannot fail to prosper , and the evidence by which its statements are supported , coming , as we . have said , from experts , is undoubtedly authoritative . Moreover , the management of the Company appears to have fallen into excellent hands , Col . F . Duncan , C . B ., M . P ., and Messrs . T . Cory and Montagu South being the Trustees for Debenture Holders , and Messrs . T . Cory , John T .

Skinner , Lieut .-Col . A . Burton-Brown , J . H . Davis , M . I . C . E ., R . Plant , and D . S . Miller , the directors , the solicitor being Bto . W . P . St . Leonards Chubb , of 29 , Lincoln ' sinn-fields . The capital consists of £ 250 , 000 , in 25 , 000 shares of £ 10 each , of which £ 100 , 000 is already paid up , and it is now proposed to issue ioao £ 6 per cent Mortgage Debentures of £ ico each , repayable at the end of 25 years , at the price of £ 110 per Bond , the Company

reseiving the option to repay the Bonds at any time within that period , on giving six months' notice , at the price of £ 115 per Bond . We may add that the first batch of letters of allotment was despatched on Wednesday , and that any further particulars that may be desired can be obtained of the Secretary , Mr . N . VVhite , at the Company's ollices , 47 , Holborn Viaduct , E . G ., or Cheadle , Stoke-on-Trent ,

Those of our readers who may have noticed a kind of dome in the middle of the road at the south-east corner of St . Paul ' s , and close by Messrs . Cook , Son , and Co . ' s establishment , and wondered what it was , will be pleased or vexed , as the case may be , to learn that to whatever uses the vault it covers may have been devoted in former days , it has now been taken and will shortly be

opened by Bro . W . Poore as a repository for the American Stores of which he is so large an importer , and when the repairs and decorations now in progiess have been completed and the interior of thevault is well fitted and furnished , and well lighted into the bargain , Bro . Poore ' s repository for American Stores will no doubt be dail y thronged with

visitors , of whom probably a great majority will become enrolled among his customers . For the benefit of the curious , we will add that the entrance through the vault is not by precipitating oneself through the skylight in the roadway , as a boy once unintentionally did some time ago , but at No . 13 , Change-alley ,
