BRO . ALDERMAN VV . H . MARSDEN , J . P ., P . G . S . B . It is with very sincere regret we announce the death of Bro . Alderman W . H . Marsden , J . P . The sad event for which , owing to a long ; continuance of failing health , the family and friends of our late brother were not wholly unprepared , occurred on the morning of Saturday , the 14 th instant , at his residence , Mile Ash , near Derby , in the affairs of which town he had for many years past taken an active and important part . His loss will be mourned by all classes and
conditions of men in the municipality he had so long adorned , and in whose interests he had laboured so arduously and successfully , but by no body or society will he be more sincerely lamented , or the memory of his virtues more sacredly cherished , than by the Masons of the town and county of Derby , amongst whom he had been a prominent and one of the most respected members for a long term of years Bro . Marsden was initiated in the Scarsdale Lodge , No . 681 , Chesterfield , in 1861 ,
and joined the Tyrian Lodge , No . 253 , when he came to live in Derby , becoming W . JI . in 18 74 . He was Prov . G . Sec . 1872-4 , and Piov . S . G . W . in 18 75 , in which year he was one of the special Stewards in London at the installation of H . R . H . the Prince of Wales as M . W . G . M . Chapter in 1884 , and Grand Standard Bearer of the Grund Chapter of England in 1 893 . In the Mark Degree he was a P . M . of the Woodiwiss Lodge , No . 503 ( being , in fact , the first Master of the lodge ) , and was recently appointed Provincial S . G . W ., previous to which he held the office of Provincial G . D . of C . In the Ancient and Accepted Rite he joined the St . Mary Chapter Rose Croix in 1886 , passed the chair in 1 S 92 , in which year he also took the 30 . He was installed as Knight Templar in the St . George ' s Preceptory , London , 1893 , and the same year
joined the newly formed Peveril Preceptory , Derby , in which he took the Degree of Knight of Malta , serving the offices of Eminent Preceptor and Prior in 1896 , and the following year was appointed Chancellor of the Province of Staffordshire , Warwickshire , Leicestershire , with Derby and Nottingham . Bro . Marsden was a libera ] and enthusiastic supporter of the Masonic Charities , for which he served no fewer than 14 Stewardships , and was Vice-Chairman of the Charity Committee of this province . Freemasonry in Derby has lost many shining lights , but never one who will be more missed than Bro . Marsden .
BRO . HENRY MUGGERIDGE . . It is with very sincere regret that we announce the death of Bro . Henry Muggeridge , who , though known only by repute to the present generation of brethren , was for about 40 years one of the most prominent members of the Fraternity in London , Our deceased brother was initiated in the Lion and Lamb Lodge , No . 192 , during the year 1839 , having , even in the days of his boyhood evinced an earnest des ' re to become a Mason Irom the fact of his father before
him having been a most zealous and painstaking member . On the day following his initiation Bro . Muggeridge became a member of the famous Stability Lodge of ^ Instruction , No . 27 , to which he was introduced by the late Bro . Peter Thompson , P . G . D ., one of the ablest and most enthusiastic exponents of our ritual that ever donned the collar of Preceptor . Here our late friend at once found himself in his element , nor was it long before he became as fully conversant with the rites and ceremonies of Freemasonry as those from whom he
had imbibed his knowledge . In 1845 he was installed as W . M . of his lodge , which he subsequenily served with the greatest devotion in the capacities of Treasurer and Secretary . In 1851 , on the death of Bro . Peter Thompson , he was unanimously chosen to succeed that distinguished Mason as the Preceptor of the Stability Lodge of Instruction , and during the many years he discharged the duties of that responsible and trying office had the satisfaction of turning out many and many a learned interpreter of our ritual . Under his auspices , itidied ,
as under those of his great predecessor , " Stability " working enjoyed a reputation second only—if , indeed , it was second—to that of the Emulation Lodge of Improvement , nor can there be stronger testimony to his merits as an instructor than the fact that since his retirement from the act've duties of Masonry , " Stability" working has declined in influence , while " Emulation" working has taken the chief place in public estimation , and is becoming nearly—if , indeed , it has not already so become—the one and only guide which it is the duty of aspiring
ritualists to follow . But to proceed with our record of his services . In 1 S 57 Bro . Muggeridge was founder and first W . Master of the Panmure Lodge , No . 715 ; while in 18 79 he took a leading part in the consecration of the Lodge , No . 1679 , which was specially founded to perpetuate his fame , and his known on the register of United Grand Lodge as the Henry Muggeridge Lodge . But it was , perhaps , in Royal Arch Masonry that he won the greatest of his distinctions . He was exalted in the Jerusalem Chapter ,
No . 185 , in the year 1843 , but subsequently resigned ani joined the Union Waterloo Chapter , No . 13 . He was also elected a member of Mount Zion Chapter , No . 22 , and in due course was elected to the chair of First Principal Z . He was for very many years Scribe E . of St . James ' s Chapter , No . 2 , and also filled the same important ollice in St . George ' s Chapter , No . 5 , while , in 1868 , the late Earl of Zetland , the then Grand Z . j appointed him Grand Standard Bearer in Supreme Grand Chapter . In October , 1856 , he was elected Collector to the Royal Masonic Institution for
Girls , and after some 20 years and upwards of earnest service retired on a wellearned pension . He was a Vice-Patron of all our three Institutions , and had acted as Steward at five of the Festivals held on their behalf . Bro . Muggeridge died at his house in Kingsland on Saturday , the 21 st instant , at the ripe age of 87 years , during some 60 of which he was a member of our Order . The funeral will take place at Abney Park Cemetery to-morrow ( Saturday ) at the hour of 12 . 30 p . m ., and will doubtless be attended by a numerous gathering of his friends and admirers .
