To Correspondents.

"ENQUIRER W . M . " —A Tyler being a serving brother is not a member of the lodge in vvhich he fills that position , and cannot therefore be included in the returns to Grand Lodge . " YELLOWWOOD . " — We have so many times replied to a similar enquiry in the pages of the Freemason that we can only refer you to our previous issues , in vvhich the story of the initiation of Mrs . Aldworth has been fully told .

Masonic Notes.

Masonic Notes .

At the moment of going to press we have received the gratifying intelligence that R . W . Bro . Lord Carrington has kindly consented to preside at the next Festival of the Girls' School . This will be excellent news for the supporters and well-wishers of the

Institution , for certainly no better or more popular selection could have been made , and the announcement will be as gratifying to his lordship ' s late District and the Grand

Lodge of New South Wales as to his future Province of Bucks . No date has yet been fixed for the Festival , but it will probably be held in May or June , so as not to clash with that of the Boys' School .

We understand also that very little progress has been made in strengthening the Board of Stewards , which , when we referred to the subject last , was not quite 200 , and is now only slightly in advance of that

figure . We trust the Committees—for Bro . Hedges , we regret to say , is away under medical advice—will bestir themselves to obtain the services of additional brethren while there is still time for those services to be productive of benefit to the Festival .

Masonic Notes.

The annual Festival of the Grand Mark Master ' s Lodge of Instruction—which occupies in the Mark Degree the place and authority which belong to the Emulation Lodge of Improvement in Craft Masonrywill celebrate its annual Festival at Mark Masons' Hall on Tuesday , the 14 th prox . The entente cordiale existing between the Constitutional and the Mark systems

will stand out very prominently on this occasion , Bro . Thomas Fenn , President of the Craft Board of General Purposes , and the leading Emulation authority , having kindly undertaken to preside as Chairman in his capacity of a Past Grand Mark Warden . Prior to the Festival the ceremony of advancement will be rehearsed

vvith full musical accompaniments , including the chants and hymns authorised by the General Board . With such a preparative , and under the auspices of so able and genial a President as Bro . Fenn , vve are satisfied this Festival will pass off , as it has done in past years , with great eclat .

With reference to a statement which appeared in our columns on the 28 th ult . to the effect that the Archbishop of York is the only Mason on the Episcopal Bench , Bro . the Rev . John A . Lloyd , Past G . Chaplain , very kindly points out that this must not be taken to apply to the colonies , as there are several Foreign

Missionary Bishops of the Anglican Church—Bro . the Rev . Dr . Sillitoe , Bishop of New Westminster , British Columbia , being a case in point- -who are members of the Craft . He even goes further and expresses his belief that Lord Alwynne Compton , Bishop of Ely , is

a Mason , and when Dean of Worcester , was present in his cathedral when divine service was held there in connection with the Masonic Exhibition , and the sermon was preached by Bro . the Dean of York . Perhaps some of our readers may be in a position to say if our

reverend brother is rig ht in his belief . We may add that the present Archbishop of Dublin—Bro . Lord Plunket—has been for very many years one of the Grand Chaplains of the Grand Lodge of Ireland .

We are pleased to see that our brethren north of the Tweed can now boast of a Masonic periodical . The Scottish Masonic Record , though only a reprint of " Mallet ' s " Masonic contributions , in the shape of news and comments , to the Glasgow Evening News , contains a considerable amount of information , and as it is published monthly , the Scottish Craft will in time have a permanent record of their doings . We wish our new contemporary every success .

* ¥ * " Sincerity " has favoured us with a letter , in which he expresses his opinion that the Board of Benevolence is not as considerate as it should be towards those who are unfortunately obliged to apply to it for relief . We are sorry we cannot oblige our correspondent by inserting his letter . We do not consider it would become

us to find space for such a communication , as the reasons which influence the Board of Benevolence in their grants , or refusals of grants , are essentially private . * * *

The members of the Savage Club Lodge are endeavouring to found a Royal Arch chapter to be attached to the lodge . Out of nearly 150 members it should be an easy matter to establish a very strong chapter , and we have no doubt it will be successful . J . J , A _

Bro . Lord Leigh , though he has presided over Warwickshire as its Provincial Grand Master for close on 40 years , is still , we rejoice to say , as ready as ever to assist , Masonically , in any work which is likely to be of service to the good people of Warwickshire . Last week , in his capacity of Provincial Grand Master , he

laid the foundation-stone of the new wing which is being added to the Leamington Hospital , and the lodges and brethren of his province supported him , as usual , both loyally and in very considerable numbers . Such an institution as the Leamington Hospital deserves every encouragement from the Craft , and vve are glad it has received it thus prominently .

* T- * Bro . the Earl of Jersey , since his arrival in New South Wales , has been the recipient of a vast number of addresses of welcome , the Masons , both Craft , Arch , and Mark , being , as usual , conspicuous amongst those

who have approached his Excellency and expressed to him their hearty good wishes on his assumption of the important post of Governor of the colony . We havc

no doubt his lordship vvill be as successful as his predecessor , Bro . Lord Carrington , in winning golden opinions from the colonists generally , and the brethren in particular .
