MASONIC CALENDAR FOR GLASGOW . . Tbis handy little guide is printed and published by \ Bro . George Kenning , and has by far the largest cir' culation of any of the kind in England and Scotland . It is utilised by the different lodges , chapters , <& c , in Glasgow by one page being changed , as required for the various bodies who subscribe largely for copies ,

and is thus most useful for their members . Small as it is , there is a calendar , lists of officers of the Grand Lodge of Scotland , the Provincial Grand Lodge and Grand Chapter of Glasgow , and much other matter , and a well-arranged table of the days , places of meeting , & c , of all the lodges and chapters for each month

of the year , which must have necessitated considerable labour in its compilation . The names and addresses of the Masters and Principals are also g iven , as well as the Secretaries , and Scribe E . ' s , & c . We note that our esteemed contributor , Bro . Edw . Macbean , is the

Z . of the senior Royal Arch Chapter , No . 50 , and the Preceptor of St . Mungo ' s Knights Templar . We wish also his inclination led him to be the W . M . of one oi the lodges in the city , so that officially he might do his part in relation to the instruction of the Scottish Craftsmen , who would much enjoy his services .

938 ] VISITATION OF LODGES . I am always very pleased to reply to any queries of my brethren , especially when forwarded from abroad , and when the way is clear . two P . M . s of the Apprentice , with whom they had not sat in open lodge , neither did they know any brother •who had . Surely to " vouch " for a visitor means that you have knowledge of him Masonically by having met him in a lodge ? 2 . As W . M . of a lodge , or in the chair pro tem ., I should not object to receive as a

visitor one who had not brought his certificate for satisfactory reasons given , but who produced " other vouchers of his having been initiated in a regular lodge , " as Law No . 150 requires ; but in the case mentioned the would-be visitor had no certificate to bring ,

which is quite a different matter , and it strikes me he had better b y far have written to England for one , which the Grand Lodge would have sent through his lodge in this country , and issued the Master Mason ' s certificate , when duly required , without any extra charge . W . J . HUGHAN .

Dobing and Bayly passed to the Second Degree . The retiring Master , Bro . Hoddinott , then impressively installed Bro . G . J . C . Rubardt as the W . M . for the ensuing year the ceremony being supplemented by an anthem— " Behold how good and joyful a thing it is , " and other music rendered under the direction of Bro . J . F . Haskins . "T ^ following officers vvere appointed and invested : Bros . E

Venner , S . W . ; G . M . Gross , J . W . ; J . Hughes , P . M Treas . ; C . Beaumont , P . M ., Sec . ; R . Gillard , S D '¦ F . Eade , J . D . ; W . Venner , I . G . ; A . Ginger , P . M ' Stwd . ; H . Barwell , D . C ; P . C . Rogers , T . W . Venner ! G . A . Linstead , and J . Hatton , Stwds . ; and Turbefield Tyler . The newly-installed W . M . gave good proof of his proficiency by initiating Messrs . C . H . Burgess and A . R

Stevenson into Freemasonry in an able manner . Other business having been transacted , the lodge was closed , and the brethren partook of an excellent banquet . The preliminary toasts having been disposed of , Bro . J . P . Hoddinott , I . P . M ., said the gavel had been placed in his hands in order that he should propose the one toast vvhich it vvas the privilege of an I . P . M . to give— " The Health of

the Worshipful Master . " It vvas vvith peculiar pleasure that he submitted that toast , for 11 years ago the father of the present Worshipful Master initiated him ( the I . P . M . ) into Freemasonry , and it vvas therefore vvith great pleasure that he had that evening installed Bro . Rubardt into the chair . The W . M . had commanded that short speeches should be made , but he should like to say that they had to

thank the W . M . for his work , and also for his support in the past years to the Charities . He trusted the members would not only show their appreciation of the W . M . by heartily drinking his health , but also in a more substantial and practical manner by contributing to his list for the Royal Masonic Institution for Girls . Bro . G . J . C . Rubardt , W . M ., in reply , said it vvas very

kind of the brethren to receive in such a hearty manner all that his friend the I . P . M . had said . Although he did not wish to say much , yet he should like to be able to express his thanks for the kind feelings expressed in reference to that toast . It afforded him sincere pleasure to fill the chair , for it vvas the greatest ambition of his life to attain vvhat he considered the highest honour a Mason could gain—the

chair of Worshipful Master in his mother lodge . He regarded it as a greater honour as it was the chair his father filled , and who initiated , passed , and raised him . He thanked them heartily for the way they had received the toast , and trusted that he should always experience the same kindly feeling and fulfil vvhat the I . P . M . had said in respect to the carrying out of his duties . The City of

London Lodge prided itself on supporting the Charities vvith good lists , and he hoped that this year the brethren would largely increase the sum of 20 guineas vvhich they had generously voted from the lodge funds . He vvas under a disadvantage , as their installation meetings had formerly been held in January , which gave more time to collect subscriptions , but he trusted the brethren would take that

into consideration , and do their utmost to support him . He hoped to take up a list—perhaps not higher than in former years—but yet large enough to sustain the credit of the lodge . The W . M . then said the next toast which fell to his lot was a very important one indeed . It vvas " The Immediate Past Master and Installing Master . " The admirable way

in vvhich Bro . Hoddinott discharged his duties during his year of office , and finished it by his impressive rendering of the installation ceremony , would place him closer to their hearts if possible . He could only ask the brethren to drink to the LP . M . ' s good health , trusting he would be long vvith them , although he had retired from actual office , and that he would cordially assist him ( the W . M . ) during ;

the coming year . Before , however , they drank the toast there vvas one great pleasure and duty to perform , which vvas to pin the Past Master ' s jewel upon Bro . Hoddinott ' s breast , and no jewel had been awarded vvhich had been more thoroughly deserved . It vvas their unanimous wish to see Bro . Hoddinott wear that jewel in his mother lodge for many years to come . There was vet another nleasure ,

vvhich vvas to invest their I . P . M . with a Past Master ' s collar which his brother officers had kindly presented . Bro . J . P . Hoddinott , I . P . M ., returned thanks for tlic hearty manner in which they had drunk his health . He felt he did not deserve quite all that had been said of him respecting his year of office , which he regarded in some respects as not so successful as that of many of the Past

Masters , but he trusted that under his charge the working had not been allowed to go back . The ritual was perhaps slightly different , and the text vvas perhaps not quite followed in the same way , but still the principles of Masonry had never been departed from , and they had always been to his faults a little blind , and to his memory very kind . He had to thank them for enabling him to take up 100 guineas to the Charities , the whole of vvhich vvas subscribed by

members of the lodge and brethren present at his installation . He thanked them sincerely that the distinguishing characteristic of a Freemason ' s heart had been present during the past year . He had also to thank them for the handsome jewel presented to him , and which would be kept by him as one of his most cherished possessions . Other toasts were given , and received in a hearty manner , the speeches being necessarily brief owing to the lateness of the hour .

Under the direction of Bro . J . F . Haskins , an excellent programme of music was carried out by Bros . John Bartlett , A . South , Wm . Devey , H . J . Dutton , and Mr . J . D . Fitzgerald . The Great City Lodge ( No . 1426 ) . —The

last meeting for the season of this lodge vvas held at the Cannon-street Hotel , on Saturday , the 14 th inst . Bro . C . F . Smith , W . M ., presided , assisted by the following officers md brethren : Bros . L . B . Mozley , S . W . ; D . T . Keene , J . W . ; Rev . R . J . Simpson , P . G . Chap ., Chap . ; N . B . Headon , P . M ., on his left , who last year was at the head of all the London lists , still , he vvas thankful to say that he was not so very far behind this year , as he found he vvas the sixth highest , and he sincerely thanked the

brethren who , by their generous contributions , had contributed to that very satisfactory result . After commending the whole of the Masonic Charities to the active benevolence of the brethren , he concluded by asking them to cordially support Bro . John Newton , P . M ., who has consented to act as Steward for the lodge at next year ' s festival .

Bro . Newton , whose name vvas coupled with the toast , in reply , eloquently dealt vvith the claims of each of the three Masonic Institutions , and said he felt it a duty as a member of the House Committee of the Aged Institution to go up as a Steward in its Jubilee year , and he made a stirring appeal to all present to help him on that occasion , and announced , amidst many cheers , that he had already nearly 30 guineas promised on his list .

The toasts of "The Visitors , " "The Past Masters , " "The Officers , " & c , vvere also fittingly proposed and responded to . During the intervals Bros . Halford , Phillips , Fraser , and Keable contributed several well-known songs and recitations . The Tyler ' s toast closed a very pleasant and enjoyable evening .

" The admirable way

in vvhich Bro . Hoddinott discharged his duties during his year of office , and finished it by his impressive rendering of the installation ceremony , would place him closer to their hearts if possible . He could only ask the brethren to drink to the LP . M . ' s good health , trusting he would be long vvith them , although he had retired from actual office , and that he would cordially assist him ( the W . M . ) during ;

the coming year .

1426 ) . —The
