INSTRUCTION . METROPOLITAN CHAPTER OF IMPROVEMENT . —As the meetings of this eminent chapter of improvement are drawing to a close for the season the concluding meetings are more numerously attended , and by some of the most skilful R . A . Masons to be found in the metropolitan district . This was particularly the case on

the 17 th inst ., when the gathering at the Jamaica Tavern , St . Alichael's-alley , Cornhill , was more numerous than usual . This was to be accounted for on account of a double attraction which had been previously announced , commencing in the first instance with a rehearsal of the ceremony of the installation of the Three Principals by Comp . Turquand , to be followed as usual by the ceremony of exaltation . Now

as the , formal induction of the Three Principals is seldom witnessed in a chapter of instruction this event was looked forward to with more than ordinary interest . The chapter having been finally opened Comp . Turquand assumed his position as Al . E . Z ., and in a most masterly manner installed Comp . Field , the newly installed M . E . Z . of the Panmure Chapter , into the first chair , and the beautiful ritual of this

Degree was rendered in a manner that elicited the warmest commendations , for seldom is it seen performed so well . The next part of the business was the installation of Comp . Storr into the chair of H ., and that was followed by the placingof Comp . Catterson into thechairof J ., each of these latter ceremonies being equally well performed . The whole of the work done gave the most complete satisfaction . The

convocation of Installed Principals being closed , the companions below the chair were admitted , and the ordinary business of exaltation was proceeded with . The officers present were : Comps . R . Payne , Z . ; J . Pavne , H . ; Chicken , J . ; Maidwell , S . N . ; M'Dowell , P . S . ; T . Brown , S . E . and Preceptor ; and Comps . Kirke , Turquand , A'lassa , Storr , Field , H . Thompson , VV . Fraser , Taylor , C . Pulman ,

Lardner , Turner , Goodenough , King , Veal , Catterson , Edwards , J . S . Fraser , and others . The ceremony of exaltation was then worked , Comp . Storr being the candidate , the whole of the Principals being well upito their duties . A vote of thanks was unanimously passed and ordered to be entered on the minutes to Comp . Turquand , for the able manner in which he had performed

the ceremony of exaltation « of the Principals , which is one seldom to be witnessed outside a regular chapter , which that worthy companion acknowledged . The following officers were then elected for the ensuing fortnight , when the session will be brought to a close : Comps . Massa , Z . ; J . Payne , H . ; Maidwell , J . ; R . Payne , S . N . ; Goodenough , P . S . The chapter was then closed .

Graveley , Marshals ; R . L . Loveland and F . Hedges , Stewards ; Berridge , Warden ; and Adams , Sentinel . Several communications having been read , and the sum of five guineas voted to Bro . Walls , Steward to the Mark Benevolent Fund Festival , the council was closed , and the brethren adjourned to an excellent banquet . Upon the removal of the cloth " The Health of the Oueen " was

loyally proposed by the T . I . M ., and heartily responded to . The toast of "The Thrice Illustrious Master" was given by the D . AL , and enthusiastically drunk . Bro . Portal , in reply , expressed his gratification in witnessing the steady progress of the Degree . The position of the Grand Alasters' Council was undeniably good , thanks to the exertions of the officers . Last year they had introduced

upwards of twenty candidates into the council , and he sincerely hoped that a similar result would crown their efforts in the coming year . Personally he felt flattered at the very hearty way in which his health had been proposed and received , and he would endeavour , as far as his clerical and other duties would allow , to attend their regular meetings . " The Health of the Grand Officers , " coupled with

the name of Bro . Walls , followed . The recipient of this honour having duly acknowledged the compliment , the toast of "The Officers of the Grand Masters' Council " was most warmly proposed by the T . I . M . He spoke at some length upon the valuable services of Bro . Dewar , who had been instrumental in introducing a great number of very distinguished Masons into the Degree , and he

believed that no officer could be found better able to discharge the duties of Recorder . ( Applause . ) TheT . I . Al . then went on to speak of the other officers of the council , notably Bro . Davison , the Treasurer , and Bro . Poore , the C . of W ., both of whom had devoted their best energies to further the cause . This toast having been honoured , Bro . Dewar in a modest speech responded upon behalf of himself and colleagues . The proceedings shortly afterwards terminated .

Grand Lodge was formally opened soon after 4 o'clock , and after the usual preliminary business had been settled , it was decided , on the motion of a brother , that at the election of all candidates for initiation into lodges throughout Scotland three black balls should exclude . The motion of Bro . GEORGE FISHER , Grand Bible Bearer , that the words " Inner Guard and " be deleted

from thc second line of Section II . of of Chapter 21 of Grand Lodge Laws was agreed to . We may state that the object of the motion was to raise the status of Prov . Grand Inner Guard , and attach to the office the right to vote in Prov . Grand Lodge . A resolution , moved by Bro . A . C . PATERSON , R . W . AL No . 103 , to the effect "that the Grand Committee be

elected by the Provincial Grand Lodges , and vary the representation according to the number of lodges in each , so that all might be represented , " was negatived . A proposition by the same brother , "that the Grand Lodge meet alternately in Perth , Ayr , Kilmarnock , Glasgow , or Edinburgh , " was withdrawn . Notices of motion for next meeting of Grand Lodge

were given in and duly taken account of by the Grand Secretary . Grand Lodge was afterwards closed at 5 . 30 . Through the courtesy of Bro . Alurray Lyon , the Grand Secretary , we were privileged to inspect the various objects of interest in the building , not the least being the signature of Robert Burns in the attendance book of a lodge which the poet had visited .

ROYAL MASONIC INSTITUTION FOR GIRLS .

The General Committee of this Institution melon Thursday at Freemasons' Hall , Bro . Col . Creaton in the chair . After the minutes had been read and confirmed , Bro . the Rev . A . F . A . WOODFORD called the attention of the Chairman to a circular issued by Bro . Massa , in which reference was made to the late Grand Treasurer , and asked

him whether it was decent or becoming that disparaging reference should be made to a dead man . Those who were living could defend themselves ; but he thought it was highly indecent that such references should be made to a man who was dead long before any of the questions referred to by Bro . Massa took place . The CHAIRMAN , in reply , said it was not only indecent , but he would go further and say that it was very indecent .

Bro . MASSA attempted to explain , but was stopped by the Chairman . Some candidates were afterwards placed on the list for election in October . The brethren then proceeded to elect the House Committee for the ensuing year . The poll was closed at five o ' clock , with the following result : — Votes . Bro . Peter de Lande Long ... ... 140

S . The chapter was then closed .

loyally proposed by the T .

The motion of Bro . GEORGE FISHER , Grand Bible Bearer , that the words " Inner Guard and " be deleted
