On the 12 th inst . the Countess of Cowper presided at the distribution of prizes to the successful candidates of this useful and increasing Institution . The presentation took place in the " Exhibition Palace , " specially prepared with great effect for the gathering , and in the presence of 4 S 15 persons .

The Countess having proceeded to a dais in the Transept , her Excellency distributed the prizes to the successful pupils , as follows : — The Ffennell prize , value £ 3 , founded by a donation from Lodge No . 24 S , Roscommon , in memory of Bro . John Fferinell , a . P . M . of that lodge , for the best answering in scripture , geography , grammar , and English history , was

awarded to Catherine A . Johnston . The Astley prizes , founded in memory of the late Bro . Charles D . Astley , Grand Superintendent of Works , consist of two divisions , two prizes being given in each . In the first division for English , comprising spelling , reading , writing , and arithmetic , the first prize , value £ 2 , was awarded to Catherine A . Johnston ; the second , value £ 1 , to Eleanor E . Burton . In the second division , for French , no first

prize was awarded . Two second prizes , value fifteen shillings each , were awarded to Lilian Hay and Alabel Barnwell . The Nagle prizes , founded by members of Lodge 242 , Boyle , in memory of Bro . James R . Nagle , AI . D ., for many years Secretary of that lodge , are awarded for feneral proficiency and good conduct throughout the year , hat for the first class , value £ 3 , was won by Catherine A . Johnston , and that in the second class , value £ 2 , by

Annie Browne . The good conduct medals ( silver and bronze ) , presented by Bro . Samuel B . Oldham , Deputy Grand Secretary , were won by Susanna Rapson and Alary Close . These medals are awarded by the votes of the pupils themselves , for general good conduct , amiability , and kindliness to their fellow pupils . It should be mentioned that during the evening several of the girls played musical selections on the pianoforte with very great precision and skill .

Cole , Grand Alaster of the Order in Virginia , to be used by him at the Yorktown centennial , the apron and sash worn by General Washington during his service as Alaster of the lodge . The apron and sash—the handiwork of Airs . General Lafayette—were presented to General Washington by General Lafayette during his visit to Alount

Vernon in 17 S 4 , and on the 3 rd of June , 1 S 12 , Alajor Lawrence Lewis presented them to Alexandria Washington Lodge , No . 22 , together with the box , made in France , which contained them .
