Bro . T . C . Freeman was at the last meeting" unanimously elected W . M . of the Kensington Lodge , No . 1767 . 13 ros . the Earl of Arran , Viscount Powerscourt , Sir T . Sutherland , M . P ., and Victor Cavendish , M . P ., were among those who attended a political meeting in the Town Hall , Westminster , on Monday evening .

liro . bir Arthur Sullivan was able to take a long drive on Monday afternoon without feeling unduly fatigued , and has made such progress towards recovery that there is every prospect of his being able to resume his professional duties at an early date .

The whole of the broad guage line of the Great Western Railway has now been taken up . It was an arduous task , but the 5000 men employed by the company accomplished it in 31 hours . The ordinary service of passenger trains was resumed early in the week .

The marriage of Major the Hon . John T . St . Aubyn , Grenadier Guards , eldest son of Lord St . Levan , with Lady Edith Edgcumbe , youngest daughter of Bro . the Earl of Mount Edgcumbe , will be solemnised at Ihe Guards Chapel , Wellington Barracks , during the third week in June .

The annual summer sale at the Royal School of Art Needlework , Exhibition-road , South-Kensington , was opened by Princess Christian of Schleswig-Holstein , who was accompanied by her daughter , Princess Victoria , and assisted at her stall by the Hon . Mrs . Percy Wyndham and Mrs . Tyssen-Amherst .

After the meeting of the Finance Committee ot the Girls ' School on Tuesday last , Bro . Alfred Capper very kindly gave his entertainment , consisting of legerdemain , songs , and finally thought-reading . It was very successful , the thought-reading experiments especially so , and appeared to give great pleasure not only to the children , but to all present .

Shortly before midnight on Wednesday thunderstorms broke over the Metropolis . Flashes of sheet lightning occurred with remarkable frequency throughout the night , and at daybreak there was a severe thunders t orm , accompanied by heavy ram , which continued for some hours .

The Duke of Cambridge had sufficiently recovered from his recent bronchial attack to be able to visit Exeter on Monday for the purpose of opening the new Drill Hall of the 1 st Volunteer Battalion Devonshire regiment , and the new hall for the Artillery Volunteers . His Royal Highness was accompanied by Bro . General Sir Redvers Buller , Sir Francis Grenfell , and Col . Lane , and during his stay was the guest of the Mayor , Mr . E . H . Houlditch .

The Prince and Princess of Wales , accompanied by Prince George and the Princesses Victoria and Maud , left Charing Cross Railway Station shortly after S p . m . on Monday evening en route for Copenhagen , where they will be the guests of the King and Oueen of Denmark .

Their Royal Highnesses , however , will nut attend any of the festivities in connection with the Golden Wedding celebration of their Majesties , which were to begin on Thursday . The Prince and his son will remain for about a week or 10 days , but the visit of the Princess and her daughters will be prolonged to about three weeks .

auspicious event was celebrated officially with the usual eclat in London on Wednesday , when the chief Ministers of State gave banquets , and there was the usual display of trooping the colours on the Horse Guards Parade . Bro . J . D . Allcroft will take the chair at the Cannonstreet Hotel to-day ( Friday ) at the half-yearly election of the Royal Hospital for Incurables . No fewer than 35 poor sufferers will be admitted to the benefits of the charity on the occasion .

Bro . J . D . Allcroft presided on Friday last , in the absence through illness of the Duke of Cambridge , at a dinner at the Hotel Me tropole in aid of the proposed new Clarence Wing of the St . Mary's Hospital . The subscriptions amounted to over £ 10 , 000 .

Bro . George Gardner , P . M ., Secretary 2012 , P . P . G . S . B . Bucks , was unanimously elected , for the ninth year in succession , Treasurer of the Chiswick Lodge of Instruction and the Benevolent Association attached thereto on Saturday last , the 21 st inst .

The German Chemical Society , of which the late Professor von Hofmann was President , has resolved to erect a memorial to him in Berlin in the form of an institute , like the English foundations in memory of famous men , which will serve as the centre of all efforts to promote chemical science and its practical application .

The deceased gentleman was much esteemed , and we offer to Bro . John Barnett , jun ., and the family generally , our sincere sympathy .

We regret to record the death , on the 24 th inst ., of Mrs . Hayman , wife of Bro . John Hayman , of the Derby Allcroft Lodge . Mrs . Hayman shared to a large extent the popularity of her husband , and was familiarly known to the members of the lodge as " Sister Kate . " The funeral took place at Willesden cemetery yesterday ( Thursday ) . The lodge sent a handsome wreath of Masonic designs .

Amongst the recent contributions to the Irish Distressed Ladies' Fund , on behalf of which an appeal is made for funds to help those Irish ladies who , owing to the rent difficulty and causes beyond their own control , have been reduced to absolute poverty , are £ 50 from the Duke of Westminster , £ 50 from the executors of the late Mrs . Jane Hibbert , 20 guineas from the Worshipful Company of Skinners , and ten guineas from the Worshipful Company of Saddlers .

Amongst the leading houses in the seed trade , that of Bro . King , of Coggeshall , Essex , takes a prominent position . Established so long ago as 1793 , it has acquired a position in the trade which could only have been miintained during these long years by strict probity and fair dealing ,

and at the same time a shrewd determination to keep abreast of the times . The catalogue just issued by the firm will bear favourable comparison with the most enterprising of rival firms , and as far as we are able to judge , embraces all the novelties as well as the specialities for which the firm is famous .

A Freemason who died a few days ago in Paris left his Masonic sash to an old friend by will . When at the point ot death , however , he sent for a priest in order to confess , and receive absolution for his sins . On the priest ' s arrival in the room he observed the sash occupying a place ol honour , and addressing himself to the servant enquired

" what that sacrilegious object was doing there r" and ordered her to throw it into the lire . The servant , convinced that unless the sash were burned here above , her master certainly would be destroyed by fire down below , complied with the ecclesiastic ' s request . George ' ssquare . Deceased was the elder son of the late Mr . Thomas Fox , of the firm of Browning , Wood , and Fox , distillers , Worship-street . I le received his education at Merchant Taylors' School , and then

studied for the law , being admitted as a solicitor , practising his profesiiun to the very last . Mr . Prince Christian attended a meeting of the governors of the Royal Holloway College , Egham , held at Lambeth Palace on Wednesday afternoon , at which Sir Henry Roscoe M . P ., Mr . Bryce , M . P ., and the Rev . Dr . Moulton were appointed honorary governors .

The Duke of Edinburgh has presented to the Royal South-Western Yacht Club a handsome silver Challenge Cup to be sailed for Service Boats . Matches will be sailed on July 15 th and August 12 th ; and the winners will compete for possession of the Cup on September 2 nd ,

Bro . Lord Mayor Evans and the Sheriffs of London were entertained at dinner at Stationers' Hall ( which was kindly lent for the occasion by the Worshipful Company of Spectaclemakers ) , on Monday . The chair was occupied by Bro . Alderman Sir Polydore De Keyser , Master of the Company , the Wardens for the year being Bro . Alderman Col . Davies and Alderman G . Faudel Phillips ,

Beaumont Park , in the eastern part of Plymouth , purchased by the Town Council at a c ret of £ 24 , 000 , was opened by the Mayor on Wednesday , in the presence nf some Sooo people . The grounds are nine acres in extent , and beautifully wooded . The district is thickly populated , and the park will be preserved purely as a recreation ground , and not laid out as an ornamental garden .

On Thursday , at a meeting of the Court of Common Council , at which the Lord Mayor presided , the Town Clerk read a letter from Lord Salisbury to Mr . J . R . Cotton , the City Chamberlain , stating that , in recognition of his valuable services , the Oueen had been pleased to confer on

him the honour of knighthood . The communication was loudly cheered , and Sir VV . Cotton , in response to calls , expressed his thanks for the cordial reception given to the intimation . The National Horticultural Exhibition at Earl's Court is now in working order . The band of the Garde

Repulilicaine , consisting of So performers , under direction of M . Gustave Wettge , will to-day ( Friday ) commence an engagement which lasts till June Sth , and to-day and to-morrow ( Saturday ) will be held the first great flower show of the season . The gardens are attracting a large number of visitors . The attendance for the first eight days was considerably over 100 , 000 , while on Saturday last the number during the day was little short of 30 , 000 .

About five o'clock on Thursday morning the alarm bell communicating with the fire-post in East-street commenced ringing violently in the Old Kent-road Fire-station . The members of the brigade promptly turned out the manual engine and escape-ladder , but on arrival at East-sticet it was found that the lightning had struck the electric wire and started the bell ringing . No damage was done . At this time the thunderstorm was at its height , and the firemen were drenched to the skin before reaching their quarters
