Bro . Lord Carrington , P . G . W ., and M . W . G . M . ofthe Grand Lodge of New South Wales , vvill vacate the Governorship of that colony in September next . Bros . Lord Ashbourne ( Lord Chancellor of Ireland ) , Lord George Hamilton , and Sir M . E . Hicks-Beach , Bart ., attended the Cabinet Council held at the Foreign Office on Saturday last .

Bro . the Earl of Rosslyn , whose health has greatly improved since he vvas last in town , is engaged vvith his Editor , Mr . W . E . Hodgson , in preparing tor the press a new edition of " Sonnets and Poems . " . Arrangements have now been completed for holding the Post Office Jubilee Conversazione at the South Kensington Museum , on Wednesday next , the 2 nd prox ., when the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh will be present .

It is understood that Bro . General Sir Fred . J . Roberts ' s term of office as Commander-in-Chief in India , vvhich in the ordinary course of things would expire in November next , vvill be prolonged for a further period of two years . The Queen , accompanied by the Princess Henry of Battenberg and her children , and the Duke and Duchess of Connaught's children , left Balmoral on the afternoon of the 20 th inst ., and reached Windsor Castle on the following mornine * .

1 he New Zealand Parliament vvas opened on Thursday the i gth instant , by the Governor , Bro . the Earl of Onslow , who congratulated the colony on the progress it had made during the past year , and the success which had attended the exhibition at Dunedin .

The 84 th anniversary festival in aid of the Licensed Victuallers' School , Upper Kennington Lane , vvill be celebrated at the Crystal Palace on Tuesday next , the ist prox ., when the chair will be taken by Mr . Phillip C . Gates , of the New Westminster Brewing Company .

The Prince and Princess of Wales , accompanied by the Duke _ of Clarence and Avondale and the Princesses Victoria and Maud , left Sunningdale Park for Windsor on Saturday last . The following day the Royal party attended Divine service at Holy Trinity Church .

Friday , the 20 th inst ., being the 53 rd anniversary of the Queen ' s accession to the throne , Royal salutes vvere fired at the Horse Guards and the Tower , and the Royal standard was hoisted at all public buildings . To-morrow ( Saturday ) will be the 52 nd anniversary of Her Majesty's coronation .

Bro . Augustus Harris received the largest number of votes by show of hands at the election of Sheriffs of London on Tuesday last , but a poll having been demanded it will take place to-day ( Friday ) . There is little doubt that the Grand Treasurer of the year vvill have another dignity conferred on him as Sheriff of London .

Bro . Lord Mayor Sir H . A . Isaacs , Bro . Alderman Sir F . W . Truscott , and Bros . Alderman and Sheriff Knill , Alderman Evans , Sheriff Harris , and Sir J . B . Monckton left London by the Great Northern Railway for Edinburgh , on a visit to Sir Thomas Clarke ( Chairman ) and the Executive Committee of the International Exhibition .

The "Old Rugbeian " triennial dinner will be held on Wednesday , the gth prox ., under the presidency of Sit Richard Temple , and among the principal guests expected to be present are Bros . Lord Brassey and Sir James Fergusson , Bart ., vvith the French Ambassador , and Bro . Alderman Sir Reginald Hanson , Bart .

ihe Royal Agricultural Society's show at Plymouth was opened on Monday under favourable conditions as regards weather , but the attendance was not large for an opening . There is an excellent display of Shorthorns , Herefords , Devons , South Downs , as well as in the sheep classes , shire horse classes , & c , & c , & c , the weak point being the hunters , hackneys , and riding horses generally .

The ball given by the Hungarian Association of Benevolence was held at Prince ' s Hall , Piccadilly , on Monday evening . The attendance vvas numerous , and dancing was kept up vvith unflagging interest till an early hour . Among the principal personages present were the Duke of Teck , the Austrian Ambassador , and the Countess Deya . and Bro . Lord Mayor Sir H . A . Isaacs and the Lady Mayoress .

The Russian Ambassador and Madame de Stael entertained the Marquis and Marchioness of Salisbury and a select dinner part y at dinner at the Russian Embassy , Chesham-place , on Tuesday . Among the guests being many members of the diplomatic body , Bro . the Iiarl and Countess of Jersey , Bro . the Earl and Countess of Arran , Bro . the Earl and Countess of Galloway , Bro . the Earl and Countess of Limerick , Bro . Lord Ashbourne , and Bro . Sir Algernon and Lady Borthwick .

The Prince and Princess of VVales , and the members of their family , with several guests , attended the festivities of the Royal Horse Guards on Saturday last . The scene of the first part vvas Queen Anne ' s ride , in Windsor Great Park , where there vvas seen a musical ride by a number of troopers of the regiment . This was followed by a cricket match between the Windsor garrison and I . Zingari , in vvhich the former obtained the victory . Lastly came a polo

match between teams of the Royal Horse Guards and 12 th Lancers , in which , after an exciting contest , thc former won by four goals to two . There were present on the occasion Prmce and Princess Henry of Battenberg , Prince Christian and his daughters , Bro . the Earl and Countess of Zetland and Lady Hilda Dundas , Bro . the Earl and Countess of Arran and Lady Esther Gore , Lady Randolph Churchill , and Bro . the Earl of LlonmHI .

The Prince of Wales vvill visit Aldershot to-day ( Friday ) for the purpose of making a farewell inspection of the nth Hussars , vvhich is under orders for South Africa . His Royal Highness the Duke of Clarence and Avondale will arrive at Scarborough this ( Friday ) afternoon to open the North Marine Promenade and Gardens . The Duke vvill be met on his arrival at the railway station

by the Mayor and Corporation . The Prince and the Princess of Wales , the Duke of Clarence and Avondale and his sister , the Princess Victoria , and the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh paid a visit to the Royal Italian Opera on Monday , and witnessed a

performance of " La Phrophete . " Bro . Alderman Sir James Whitehead and Lady Whitehead vvere present-at the annual distribution of prizes of the Commercial Travellers' Schools , at Pinner , on Saturday last , the prizes being distributed by Lady Whitehead , and an address delivered by Sir lames .

The Prince of Wales has fixed Thursday , the 24 th July , for laying the foundation stone of the new building for the Royal South London Ophthalmic Hospital . The Princess of VVales will also be present , and receive purses in aid of the Royal Foundation Fund .

A meeting of the office-bearers of the lodges in Invernessshire was held on the igth inst ., when it vvas resolved to appoint Sir Henry C . MacAndrew as Grand Alaster for the county . A deputation from the Grand Lodge of Scotland was present . Ihe installation ceremony vvill be performed by Sir Archibald Campbell , of Blythswood .

The Eldon Lodge , Portishead , at their meeting on Saturday week , supplemented a recent vote of congratulation to Bro . Alfred J . Tonkin on his marriage by a handsome present . This was made by Bro . Wm . Glasspole , the VV . M ., on behalf of the lodge , and consisted of a beautifully carved oak clock , vvith ivory hands and figures .

We understand that the meeting of the Provincial Grand Lodge of Kent , vvhich had been summoned for 12 . 30 at the Assembly Rooms , Ashford , on ioth July , vvill not meet until one o ' clock , in order to meet the convenience of the East Kent brethren , and the service at the Church at 2 . 30 , instead of two , when our Rev . Bro . Maughan , vicar of Whitstable , vvill preach the sermon .

Bro . John Callard , P . G . O . of the Grand Lodge of Canada in Ontario , Alderman of London , after an absence of 27 years , is on a visit to Torquay to commemorate the celebration of the golden wedding of his parents , his presence making the family circle complete . Bro . Callard vvas a visitor at the last meeting of the Jordan Lodge , No . 1402 , and delivered a short address .

1 he members of the Masonic lodges in West Ham are to have an outing next month , Broxbourne being the place selected . The lead in the matter has been taken by the West Ham Abbey Lodge , but the excursion vvill not be confined to members of that lodge , or , indeed , to members of the Order . It is anticipated that a number of ladies will be present , and no effort will be spared to make the trip enjoyable .

The remains of Bro . James B . Galloway were interred on Friday last in the secluded churchyard of Roby . The deceased , who was cut off in the prime of life , vvas highly esteemed by a large circle of friends for his suavity of temper and uprightness of character . He held as a Mason the important position of I . P . M . in the Duke of Edinburgh Lodge , No . 11 S 2 , the members of which have sustained a very serious loss in his death . A large number of his brethren attended the funeral .

The fifth musical evening under the auspices of the Dramatic and Arts Lodge , which took the form of a smoking concert , vvas given on Friday last in the Freemasons ' Hall , Edinburgh . Bro . W . G . Stevenson , K . W . M ., occupied the chair , and there vvas a large attendance . The programme for the evening was an exceedingly varied and attractive one , and its length alone prevented the giving of encores , vvhich the majority uf the pieces merited .

Their Royal Highnesses the Duke and Duchess of Connaught left Liverpool , where they had arrived by the Sardinian from India , via China , Japan , and Canada , lor Windsor Castle on Sunday morning last , at S p . m ., and on reaching the railway terminus at Windsor , were met by the

Queen , the Prince and Princess of VVales , the Prince and Princess Henry of Battenberg , their children , and other members of the Royal family . The party then drove to the Castle , where the Duke and Duchess vvill remain the guests of the Oueen for a time .

The Duke of Clarence and Avondale took his seat for the first time in the House of Lords with the customary formalities on Monday . His Royal Highness was introduced by the Prince of VVales and the Duke of Edinburgh , while Bro . Sir Albert Woods ( Garter ) , the Duke of Norfolk ( Earl

Marshal ) , and Lord Willoughby d'Eresby ( Lord Great Chamberlain ) were in attendance . The Princess of Wales and her daughters witnessed the proceedings , and there was a large attendance of peers and ladies , bpectators among the latter being Lady Halsbury , Lady Leigh , and Lady Balfour .

The mortal remains of Bro . the Rev . George Lemon Church , P . P . S . G . W ., vicar of Chacewater , were interred on Tuesday , the ioth inst ., in the family vault at the parish churchyard of St . Paul ' s . The reverend brother , who held the living of Chacewater for 43 years , was a member of the Boscawen Lodge , as well as nearly all the public institutions of the village . He was very popular with his

parishioners , and highly esteemed by all who knew him . The deceased vvas carried to his last resting place by eight brethren , whilea large number of members of the Boscawen Lodge vvere present , as well as brethren from the lodges of Truro , Penzance , and Redruth . At the conclusion of the burial service the Rev . Olivey , with much feeling , delivered the usual Masonic oration .

The Prince and Princess of Wales , accompanied by the Princesses Victoria and Maud , visited the Cheyne Hospital for Sick and Incurable Children on Wednesday afternoon , in Cheyne-vvalk , Chelsea . The public festivities in connection vvith the golden wedding of the Bishop of Winchester commenced at Farnham Castle on Wednesday , when about 300 of the aged inhabitants of Farnham vvere entertained by the Bishop .

A new lifeboat of the Suffolk and Norfolk type was launched at Lowestoft on Wednesday afternoon . The vessel , vvhich is called the Stock Exchange , is the largest in the service , and is the 29 th on the Norfolk and Suffolk coasts .

A communication of the Provincial Grand Lodge of North Connaught is called for Tuesday next , the ist July , for the purpose of welcoming Bro . Surgeon Parke on his safe return from Central Africa . The meeting- is to be held at the Court House , Carrick-on-Shannon .

The Directors of the Empire Theatre , Limited , have just declared the second interim dividend for the present year at the following rates , viz .: —is . Sd . on each share of £ 1 on vvhich ios . has been paid , and 2 S . Gd . on each £ 1 share on which 15 s . has been paid , payable on the 5 th July .

The Duke and Duchess of Connaught , with their four children , the Duke of Cambridge , the Princess Mary Adelaide , and Princess Victoria ot leek , visited the Royal Military Tournament at the Agricultural Hall on Wednesday afternoon , and remained throughout the contests .

There vvas a great gathering of Notts Freemasons at Southwell on Thursday , when the summer meeting of Provincial Grand Lodge vvas held at the Bishop's Palace . The brethren afterwards attended Divine service in the Cathedral , where the sermon vvas preached by the Dean of York , Past Grand Chaplain . We shall give a full report of the proceedings in our next .

We would remind our readers that the bazaar in aid of the funds of the United Kingdom Band of Hope Union , and which vvill have a Temperance Masonic Stall under the charge of Bro . R . A . Gowan , of 2 g , Gresham-street , will be held at Exeter Hall , on Monday , July 7 th . The opening ceremony vvill be performed by H . R . H . Princess Louise ( Marchioness of Lome ) , and most successful results are anticipated .

At the election meeting of the Nelson Lodge , No . 700 , at Plumstead , on the iSth inst ., Bro . S . E . Southgate vvas unanimously elected VV . M ., and Bro . J . H . Roberts , P . M ., Treasurer of the lodge . A Past Master's jewel , of the value of 10 guineas , vvas voted to the outgoing Master , Bro . VV . Webber , for his many services to the lodge during his year of office . The banquet vvill be held at the New Falcon , Gravesend , on the ioth prox .

A grand " soiree musicale " in aid of St . John ' s Hospital for diseases of the skin , Leceister Square , is to be given on Monday , the 7 th July , at the Prince ' s _ Hall , Piccadilly . A most attractive programme has been issued , containing the names of some one or two well known professional ladies and gentlemen who are giving their services , and as it is under very distinguished patronage , there can be no doubt that it vvill prove a great success .

The munificent offer recently made by Sir Dinshaw Manockjee Petit , the wealthy and philanthropic Parsee baronet , of a lakh of rupees for the erection of anew Home for Lepers in Bombay , has afforded much gratification to the poorer people of tne Western Presidency . This is only one of the numerous benefactions of this charitable millionaire , as he , during the past few years , has given away fabulous sums for various schemes lor bettering the lot ot suffering humanity in his part ofthe world .

The Hull Masonic Club Company , Limited , incorporated in February last , to provide at Kingston-upon-Hull a place of meeting for the treemasons ot that district promises to be successful . Of the 2000 shares of £ 1 each , which forms the nominal capital of the company , 955 have been already subscribed for by 103 members , and the directors have not as yet found it necessary to make a call beyond

ios . per share . This should encourage the formation ot similar institutions in other towns where Masons "must so congregate . " The second annual meeting of the Cyprus Society vvas held on Wednesday afternoon at the Church House , Earl Nelson in the chair , lt was stated that the object to which

efforts should probably lirst be directed was the sending out of two English clergymen to establish a college or school in Nicosia lor the higher training of Cyprus youths , who vvere now obliged to go to Beyrout , Alexandria , or Athens . The council appealed for funds to enable them to follow up the commencement of the nursing work , and to begin at once the building of the Gordon Hospital at Kyrenia .

The Alumni of Trinity of College , Dublin , residing in London and the vicinity , to the number of about 150 , dined together on Wednesday in the Hall of the Middle Temple . Amongst those present were the Earl ot Kosse , Chancellor of Dublin University ( in the chair ) , Viscount Gort , Mr . J ustice Mathew , the ., Archdeacon ot Northumberland , the

The Echo , of the 26 th inst ., has the following in reference to the action of Bro . Walter Besant with respect to the Society for the Promotion of Christian Knowledge : " Mr . Walter Besant wants information , and we hope he may get it . He wants to know how the Society for tne Promotion of Christian Knowledge can reconcile the sweating practices he lays to its charge with the Christianity of Christ . He is

not to be trilled with—Mr . Besant . He has written a pamphlet ( published by Glaisher ) , in which he accuses this Christian Society ot grasping , ungenerous treatment of the authors—and especially of the women—from the sale of whose books it derives its very prosperous revenues . Mr .

Besant , in his straightforward way , gives sume striking examples of the kind of unfairness against which he is inveighing . What answer has this publishing concern—vvhich is no more ' Christian ' than Longmans or Murray — to give to Mr . Besant ? Of one thing the Society may feel sure—Mr . Besant vvill not let the matter drop . "

ihe Royal Agricultural Society's show at Plymouth was opened on Monday under favourable conditions as regards weather , but the attendance was not large for an opening . There is an excellent display of Shorthorns , Herefords , Devons , South Downs , as well as in the sheep classes , shire horse classes , & c , & c , & c , the weak point being the hunters , hackneys , and riding horses generally .

The ball given by the Hungarian Association of Benevolence was held at Prince ' s Hall , Piccadilly , on Monday evening . The attendance vvas numerous , and dancing was kept up vvith unflagging interest till an early hour . Among the principal personages present were the Duke of Teck , the Austrian Ambassador , and the Countess Deya . and Bro . Lord Mayor Sir H . A . Isaacs and the Lady Mayoress .

The Russian Ambassador and Madame de Stael entertained the Marquis and Marchioness of Salisbury and a select dinner part y at dinner at the Russian Embassy , Chesham-place , on Tuesday . Among the guests being many members of the diplomatic body , Bro . the Iiarl and Countess of Jersey , Bro . the Earl and Countess of Arran , Bro . the Earl and Countess of Galloway , Bro . the Earl and Countess of Limerick , Bro . Lord Ashbourne , and Bro . Sir Algernon and Lady Borthwick .

The Prince and Princess of VVales , and the members of their family , with several guests , attended the festivities of the Royal Horse Guards on Saturday last . The scene of the first part vvas Queen Anne ' s ride , in Windsor Great Park , where there vvas seen a musical ride by a number of troopers of the regiment . This was followed by a cricket match between the Windsor garrison and I . Zingari , in vvhich the former obtained the victory . Lastly came a polo

match between teams of the Royal Horse Guards and 12 th Lancers , in which , after an exciting contest , thc former won by four goals to two . The Prince of Wales vvill visit Aldershot to-day ( Friday ) for the purpose of making a farewell inspection of the nth Hussars , vvhich is under orders for South Africa . His Royal Highness the Duke of Clarence and Avondale will arrive at Scarborough this ( Friday ) afternoon to open the North Marine Promenade and Gardens . The Duke vvill be met on his arrival at the railway station

by the Mayor and Corporation . The Prince and the Princess of Wales , the Duke of Clarence and Avondale and his sister , the Princess Victoria , and the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh paid a visit to the Royal Italian Opera on Monday , and witnessed a

performance of " La Phrophete . " Bro . Alderman Sir James Whitehead and Lady Whitehead vvere present-at the annual distribution of prizes of the Commercial Travellers' Schools , at Pinner , on Saturday last , the prizes being distributed by Lady Whitehead , and an address delivered by Sir lames .

The Prince of Wales has fixed Thursday , the 24 th July , for laying the foundation stone of the new building for the Royal South London Ophthalmic Hospital . The Princess of VVales will also be present , and receive purses in aid of the Royal Foundation Fund .

A meeting of the office-bearers of the lodges in Invernessshire was held on the igth inst ., when it vvas resolved to appoint Sir Henry C . MacAndrew as Grand Alaster for the county . A deputation from the Grand Lodge of Scotland was present . Ihe installation ceremony vvill be performed by Sir Archibald Campbell , of Blythswood .

The Eldon Lodge , Portishead , at their meeting on Saturday week , supplemented a recent vote of congratulation to Bro . Alfred J . Tonkin on his marriage by a handsome present . This was made by Bro . Wm . Glasspole , the VV . M ., on behalf of the lodge , and consisted of a beautifully carved oak clock , vvith ivory hands and figures .

We understand that the meeting of the Provincial Grand Lodge of Kent , vvhich had been summoned for 12 . 30 at the Assembly Rooms , Ashford , on ioth July , vvill not meet until one o ' clock , in order to meet the convenience of the East Kent brethren , and the service at the Church at 2 . 30 , instead of two , when our Rev . Bro . Maughan , vicar of Whitstable , vvill preach the sermon .

Bro . John Callard , P . G . O . of the Grand Lodge of Canada in Ontario , Alderman of London , after an absence of 27 years , is on a visit to Torquay to commemorate the celebration of the golden wedding of his parents , his presence making the family circle complete . Bro . Callard vvas a visitor at the last meeting of the Jordan Lodge , No . 1402 , and delivered a short address .

1 he members of the Masonic lodges in West Ham are to have an outing next month , Broxbourne being the place selected . The lead in the matter has been taken by the West Ham Abbey Lodge , but the excursion vvill not be confined to members of that lodge , or , indeed , to members of the Order . It is anticipated that a number of ladies will be present , and no effort will be spared to make the trip enjoyable .

The remains of Bro . James B . Galloway were interred on Friday last in the secluded churchyard of Roby . The deceased , who was cut off in the prime of life , vvas highly esteemed by a large circle of friends for his suavity of temper and uprightness of character . He held as a Mason the important position of I . P . M . in the Duke of Edinburgh Lodge , No . 11 S 2 , the members of which have sustained a very serious loss in his death . A large number of his brethren attended the funeral .

The fifth musical evening under the auspices of the Dramatic and Arts Lodge , which took the form of a smoking concert , vvas given on Friday last in the Freemasons ' Hall , Edinburgh . Bro . W . G . Stevenson , K . W . M ., occupied the chair , and there vvas a large attendance . The programme for the evening was an exceedingly varied and attractive one , and its length alone prevented the giving of encores , vvhich the majority uf the pieces merited .

Their Royal Highnesses the Duke and Duchess of Connaught left Liverpool , where they had arrived by the Sardinian from India , via China , Japan , and Canada , lor Windsor Castle on Sunday morning last , at S p . m ., and on reaching the railway terminus at Windsor , were met by the

Queen , the Prince and Princess of VVales , the Prince and Princess Henry of Battenberg , their children , and other members of the Royal family . The party then drove to the Castle , where the Duke and Duchess vvill remain the guests of the Oueen for a time .

The Duke of Clarence and Avondale took his seat for the first time in the House of Lords with the customary formalities on Monday . His Royal Highness was introduced by the Prince of VVales and the Duke of Edinburgh , while Bro . Sir Albert Woods ( Garter ) , the Duke of Norfolk ( Earl

Marshal ) , and Lord Willoughby d'Eresby ( Lord Great Chamberlain ) were in attendance . The Princess of Wales and her daughters witnessed the proceedings , and there was a large attendance of peers and ladies , bpectators among the latter being Lady Halsbury , Lady Leigh , and Lady Balfour .

The mortal remains of Bro . the Rev . George Lemon Church , P . P . S . G . W ., vicar of Chacewater , were interred on Tuesday , the ioth inst ., in the family vault at the parish churchyard of St . Paul ' s . The reverend brother , who held the living of Chacewater for 43 years , was a member of the Boscawen Lodge , as well as nearly all the public institutions of the village . He was very popular with his

parishioners , and highly esteemed by all who knew him . The deceased vvas carried to his last resting place by eight brethren , whilea large number of members of the Boscawen Lodge vvere present , as well as brethren from the lodges of Truro , Penzance , and Redruth . At the conclusion of the burial service the Rev . Olivey , with much feeling , delivered the usual Masonic oration .

The public festivities in connection vvith the golden wedding of the Bishop of Winchester commenced at Farnham Castle on Wednesday , when about 300 of the aged inhabitants of Farnham vvere entertained by the Bishop .

A new lifeboat of the Suffolk and Norfolk type was launched at Lowestoft on Wednesday afternoon . The vessel , vvhich is called the Stock Exchange , is the largest in the service , and is the 29 th on the Norfolk and Suffolk coasts .

A communication of the Provincial Grand Lodge of North Connaught is called for Tuesday next , the ist July , for the purpose of welcoming Bro . Surgeon Parke on his safe return from Central Africa . The meeting- is to be held at the Court House , Carrick-on-Shannon .

The Directors of the Empire Theatre , Limited , have just declared the second interim dividend for the present year at the following rates , viz .: —is . Sd . on each share of £ 1 on vvhich ios . has been paid , and 2 S . Gd . on each £ 1 share on which 15 s . has been paid , payable on the 5 th July .

The Duke and Duchess of Connaught , with their four children , the Duke of Cambridge , the Princess Mary Adelaide , and Princess Victoria ot leek , visited the Royal Military Tournament at the Agricultural Hall on Wednesday afternoon , and remained throughout the contests .

There vvas a great gathering of Notts Freemasons at Southwell on Thursday , when the summer meeting of Provincial Grand Lodge vvas held at the Bishop's Palace . The brethren afterwards attended Divine service in the Cathedral , where the sermon vvas preached by the Dean of York , Past Grand Chaplain . We shall give a full report of the proceedings in our next .

We would remind our readers that the bazaar in aid of the funds of the United Kingdom Band of Hope Union , and which vvill have a Temperance Masonic Stall under the charge of Bro . R . A . Gowan , of 2 g , Gresham-street , will be held at Exeter Hall , on Monday , July 7 th . The opening ceremony vvill be performed by H . R . H . Princess Louise ( Marchioness of Lome ) , and most successful results are anticipated .

At the election meeting of the Nelson Lodge , No . 700 , at Plumstead , on the iSth inst ., Bro . S . E . Southgate vvas unanimously elected VV . M ., and Bro . J . H . Roberts , P . M ., Treasurer of the lodge . A Past Master's jewel , of the value of 10 guineas , vvas voted to the outgoing Master , Bro . VV . Webber , for his many services to the lodge during his year of office . The banquet vvill be held at the New Falcon , Gravesend , on the ioth prox .

A grand " soiree musicale " in aid of St . John ' s Hospital for diseases of the skin , Leceister Square , is to be given on Monday , the 7 th July , at the Prince ' s _ Hall , Piccadilly . A most attractive programme has been issued , containing the names of some one or two well known professional ladies and gentlemen who are giving their services , and as it is under very distinguished patronage , there can be no doubt that it vvill prove a great success .

The munificent offer recently made by Sir Dinshaw Manockjee Petit , the wealthy and philanthropic Parsee baronet , of a lakh of rupees for the erection of anew Home for Lepers in Bombay , has afforded much gratification to the poorer people of tne Western Presidency . This is only one of the numerous benefactions of this charitable millionaire , as he , during the past few years , has given away fabulous sums for various schemes lor bettering the lot ot suffering humanity in his part ofthe world .

The Hull Masonic Club Company , Limited , incorporated in February last , to provide at Kingston-upon-Hull a place of meeting for the treemasons ot that district promises to be successful . Of the 2000 shares of £ 1 each , which forms the nominal capital of the company , 955 have been already subscribed for by 103 members , and the directors have not as yet found it necessary to make a call beyond

ios . per share . This should encourage the formation ot similar institutions in other towns where Masons "must so congregate . " The second annual meeting of the Cyprus Society vvas held on Wednesday afternoon at the Church House , Earl Nelson in the chair , lt was stated that the object to which

efforts should probably lirst be directed was the sending out of two English clergymen to establish a college or school in Nicosia lor the higher training of Cyprus youths , who vvere now obliged to go to Beyrout , Alexandria , or Athens . The council appealed for funds to enable them to follow up the commencement of the nursing work , and to begin at once the building of the Gordon Hospital at Kyrenia .

The Alumni of Trinity of College , Dublin , residing in London and the vicinity , to the number of about 150 , dined together on Wednesday in the Hall of the Middle Temple . The Echo , of the 26 th inst ., has the following in reference to the action of Bro . Walter Besant with respect to the Society for the Promotion of Christian Knowledge : " Mr . Walter Besant wants information , and we hope he may get it . He wants to know how the Society for tne Promotion of Christian Knowledge can reconcile the sweating practices he lays to its charge with the Christianity of Christ . He is

not to be trilled with—Mr . Besant . He has written a pamphlet ( published by Glaisher ) , in which he accuses this Christian Society ot grasping , ungenerous treatment of the authors—and especially of the women—from the sale of whose books it derives its very prosperous revenues . Mr .

Besant , in his straightforward way , gives sume striking examples of the kind of unfairness against which he is inveighing . What answer has this publishing concern—vvhich is no more ' Christian ' than Longmans or Murray — to give to Mr . Besant ? Of one thing the Society may feel sure—Mr . Besant vvill not let the matter drop . "
