Masonic Notes.
As for the others mentioned , it is only necessary to mention that the Grand Lodge of Kentucky was formed by three lodges of Missourian ori gin , and tbat of Ohio in 180 S by five lodges , of which one hailed from New Jersey , one from Pennsylvania , two from Connecticut , and one from Kentucky .
At the Communication of the Grand Lodge of Maryland in November , 1 S 88 , Bro . Jacob H . McLairy , who bas been Grand Secretary for the period of 25 years , was presented with a solid silver loving-cup , about 16 inches high , with a cubic capacity of one gallon ,
on one side of which was engraved a square and compasses , and a scroll bearing the inscription : " Most Worshipful Grand Lodge of Maryland to its faithful Grand Secretary , Right Worshipful Brother Jacob H . McLairy , November 20 th , 1888 . " He was also presented
on the same occasion with a bronze clock by Adherence Lodge , No . 88 ; a Grand Secretary ' s jewel of office by Waverley Lodge , No . 152 ; a solid silver pen-tray , & c , by the Grand Master , and a silver paper cutter by Mrs . Shryock .
* * * It appears that a new regulation was adopted last year by the Grand Lodge of New Hampshire , which pi ascribes that when a man proposes to offer himself as a candidate for initiation into Freemasonry a
Committee of Investigation must inquire , not only as to his age , residence , and generally as to his standing in life , but also as to whether he is single or married , and if married , whether he lives with his wife ; whether he is addicted to the intemperate use of intoxicating liquors ;
if he gambles or associates with bad characters ; and if he habitually uses profane or indecent language . Many of our readers will , no doubt , consider that , though it is just and proper that a lodge should take reasonable precautions against the admission of
improper candidates , some of these questions are not a little inquisitorial . There is often great laxity over the admission of candidates into our lodges , but it strikes us that this kind of regulation goes too far , and that it should be enough if a man is well and worthily recommended .

PROVINCIAL GRAND LODGE OF NORTHUMBERLAND . To the Editor of the "Freemason . " Dear Sir and Brother , In your issue of the 21 st inst ., in an article under the above heading , and in referring to the lodges of the Province of Northumberland , you say— " of which one-half are located in the city of Newcastle , nor with
the exception of its senior lodge—the Newcastle-on-Tyne , No . 24—which was warranted b y the ' Antients ' in 1752-3—can it boast of any lodge of earlier constitution than the year 1828 . " For the information of myself , and 1 have no doubt other young Masonic students , I should be glad to know
the exact meaning of this paragraph . On turning to Bro . Lane ' s valuable " Masonic Records , " I find that the Newcastle-upon-Tyne Lodge was warranted as an Athol Lodge , No . 131 , on 24 th September , 1805 , but on 2 nd April , 1813 , it had surrendered its warrant of 24 th September , 1805 , and got an old
warrant of No . 15 , then vacant , and no doubt for a consideration . On the ioth August , 1814 , it amalgamated with the " St . Nicholas Lodge " ( Modern ) , whose warrant dates from 2 nd April , 1813 , and the amalgamated lodges under the name of the " Newcastle-upon-Tyne " Lodge , at the Union , got the very high number of 26 ,
and now stands as No . 24 . What I wish to learn is this—Can a lodge claim to have had an existence since 1752-3 merel y because it purchased an old warrant which had been l ying on the shelves of the Athol Grand Lodge for many years , and which originall y did not belong to the Province of
Northumberland , or does its existence start from the date of its own original warrant , which in this case is 24 th September , 1805 V I am also puzzled to know how this lodge got a centenary warrant . —Yours faithfull y and fraternally , September 23 rd . P . G . R .
THE BOYS' SCHOOL . To the Editor of the " Freemason . " Dear Sir and Brother , I have been requested by the Provisional Management Committee of the Royal Masonic Institution for Boys to invite from the friends of the
Institution donations of pictures and prints suitable for the decoration of the rooms , and any indoor games and books that will tend to amuse the Boys during the coming winter evenings . I shall be pleased to acknowledge the receipt of presents sent to me at the undermentioned address . — Yours faithfully and fraternally , JOSEPH D . LANGTON , Hon .
