Nathan was the founder of the Zion Lodge , 179 S , which was consecrated in May , 1879 , when he became first Master , and up to the present period has been an active member .

" As some little history of his life might be interesting to those who may look on this picture hereafter , the following are a few items : " He was born at 144 , Long Millgate , Manchester , known as Poet's Corner , 27 th June , 1 S 09 . He first

commenced his schooldays with the celebrated Madame Broadbent ( a character spoken of by Mrs . Linn .-eus Banks in her book of "The Manchester Man " ) . He left this school at the age of eight , and then was placed under the tutorage of William Makinson , in Oldham-street , Manchester , from the windows of which school he witnessed the return of the

' Blanketeers' in 1 S 17 , on their being driven back by the military when on their way to London to petition Parliament for measures of reform . Two years afterwards , in 1 S 19 , he went to a school in Clarence-street , Princess-street , Manchester , kept by James Oman . " Near the scene of , and at the time of , the " Peterloo Massacre , ' he saw some of the wounded walking bleeding

away , driven by the cavalry . "In 1 S 22 he was bound apprentice as a working jeweller to his grandfather , who was then in his Soth year . And in 1 S 2 S he commenced business on his own account in Chapelstreet , Salford . Subsequently in Old Millgate , and then in Victoria-street , Manchester . " Some 25 years ago , the Imperial George Lodge , 78 , at

Middleton , and the Yarboro' Lodge , 633 , in Manchester , through circumstances , were very much reduced in numbers , and had barely sufficient to keep the lodges in working order , and for a considerable time Bro . Nathan gave his services in sustaining and carrying forward the work of those lodges , by constant attendance , until they became more prosperous , and , as a reward for his services , each of

these lodges made him an honorary member , which privilege he holds to the present day . "On his retiring from the position of first Master of the won Lodge , in December , 1 SS 0 ( having held the office for iS months ) , the members presented him with a handsome timepiece and side ornaments to match . " He was one of the promoters of the Derby Lodge 1055

, , andof the Stamford Lodge , in Altrincham . " 1 his portrait was presented to Bro . Nathan , in September , 1 SS 9 , and in the ei g hty-first year of his age . " Ihc presentation having been thus made , Bro . E . Nathan replied as follows : " Worshipful Master and brethren , —I cannot express to you my feellings of thankfulness for this act of consideration towards me . If I said the whole matter

came upon as a surprise I should not be telling you the exact state of the case from my point of view , I was aware 'hat a portrait was about to be presented to me , inasmuch as 1 was asked to sit for the same . But this further evidence of your good will is , I can safely say , a surprise . But still it is well worthy of my grateful acknowled gment . Reference has been made to my connection

with the Caledonian Lodge , and I feel a Peculiar pleasure in knowing that the brethren of that lodge Retaken such interest in these proceedings . I remember "ell when I first took office as a Steward I considered it an "' Hour to be asked to occupy any position as an officer , nu so did men whose social position was far above my own but with a truly Masonic spirit

The lodge was closed , and the brethren partook of an excellent repast served under the superintendence of the

Mather , P . G . Treas ., responded for "The Grand Officers , " and remarked that they always endeavoured to do their duty , and he trusted they would continue

to do so . Bro . Jno . Barrett , jun ., Prov . G . Stwd ., replied for "The Provincial Grand Officers , " and returned thanks for the cordiality with which the toast had been proposed and received . " The Health of the W . Master" was given by Bro . Lawrance , I . P . M ., who said he was convinced that Bro .

Clowes would make a good Master . This opinion rested on the fact that their W . M . had worked well in the lodge ever since he had been in it , and he would , no doubt , be of _ great benefit to it in the future . The members would join in wishing him a happy year , and in drinking his health very cordially .

Bro . Win . Clowes , VV . M ., heartily thanked the I . P . M . for the kind words spoken of him , and the brethren for the manner in which they had received the toast . He was afraid the I . P . M . had spoken too highly of him , but he hoped to improve and give satisfaction to all the members . He should do his best , and was sure he should have . the able assistance of his predecessor , and , therefore , a

prosperous year . Bro . Dr . Lawrance , I . P . M ., in response to the toast of " The Installing Master , " said it was a great pleasure to him to have had the honour of installing Bro . Clowes that evening , because he felt sure he would do credit to that installation . Hc was sorry he had been obliged to leave the VV . M . some work , in consequence of the absence of the candidates . It had been his aim in Masonry to work , and

if he did not work he did not consider he had earned his dinner . As a P . M . of that lodge he could only say he took a great interest in it , and he had been rewarded . He should always wear the jewel presented to him in grateful remembrance of the lodge and the brethren . It was the only Mark jewel he had had presented to him , except thc Chanty jewel , and he should always prize it . He again

thanked them , hoping to see a prosperous year and plenty of work . "The Visitors" was cordially given and responded to by Bros . S . Barton Wilson , C . V . Hogard , and others . Bros . Gardner and Mather , as Treasurer and Secretary , respectively replied tothe toast of their healths , and "The Officers" having been duly acknowledged , the Tyler's toast brought the proceedings to a close .

Bros .
