The Provincial Grand Chapter of Leicester and Rutland is to assemble at the Freemasons' Hall , Leicester , on Tuesday , the ist prox ., under the auspices of the St . George ' s Chapter , No . 1560 . The veteran Grand Superintendent , Comp . William Kelly , F . S . A ., & c , will

preside , and be supported by Comps . S . S . Partridge , P . G . S . B ., Prov . G . H ., and Joseph Young , Prov . G . J . Comp . the Rev . C . Hinton Wood , M . A ., is the Prov . G . S . E ., and makes both an able and most courteous Secretary of this prosperous Grand Chapter for these two counties .

The business is mainly as usual for such occasions and the reports are all of an encouraging character . There is a balance in hand of ^ 22 4 s . 2 d . on the year ' s accounts . Comp . J . Tuckfield is Prov . G . Treasurer .

The Director of Ceremonies is Comp . Miles J . Walker , who , beyond question , is the " right brother in the ri ght place . " Though not a large province , there is no lack of enthusiasm with the members .

Bro . Gerard Ford , D . Prov . G . Master of Sussex , is still , we regret to say , lying ill at Berne , but will be removed back home as soon as possible . It is thought the air of Brighton will do more than anything else

towards restoring his health . As announced in our last the Moveable Grand Mark Lodge has been adjourned in consequence of his absence , and no definite date can at present be fixed for the meeting .

The annual meeting of the Provincial Grand Lodge of Sussex is fixed for Saturday , October 12 th , and although the absence of the Deput y Provincial Grand

Master is much deplored , the necessity of his being present is not so imperative as in the case of the Grand Mark Lodge , its raisoii d ' etre being the installation of Bro . Gerard Ford as Provincial Grand Master .

The consecration of Lodge "Acacia , " No . 2321 , has been fixed by the R . W . Prov . G . Master , Bro . Thomas Tew , J . P ., for to-morrow ( Saturday ) at the Masonic Hall , Bradford , who will himself perform the ceremony ,

and Bro . J . Ramsden Riley will afterwards install the W . M ., Bro . Alfred Stephenson . There is to be no banquet , but a tea will be provided at the hall at five o ' clock , and it is specially noted that intoxicating drinks will not be provided .

* * * We are reminded b y the appeals for support we are almost daily receiving from candidates for the Girls' and Boys' Schools at the Elections in October , of the many " last chances " which are always presenting

themselves . It is almost heartrending to find at the declaration of the polls that one or more of these unfortunate applicants , after unwearying efforts on the part of their supporters at several elections , are at last finally shut

out , with only a few votes between them and success . There must be a number of subscribers who have no special candidates to support , and to these brethren we would appeal to render what aid they can to this unfortunate class .

Masonic Notes.

Lodge Quatuor Coronati meets again on Friday next . The paper to be read on this occasion will be " On Some Errors of Scientific Expression in the Masonic Ritual , " by Bro . Professor W . Mattieu Williams . The " Old Masonians " are making steady progress

in organising their Association and establishing it on a firm basis . A somewhat more ambitious attempt than they have hitherto ventured on is being made in aid of the Benevolent and Grant Fund of the Association

by a proposed dramatic performance at St . George s Hall early in November . If the School languishes for want of funds , it will not be the fault of the " Old Boys , " whose efforts are altogether praiseworthy and deserving of success .

Bro . Horace Brooks Marshall has frequently come to the rescue in these cases , and several pupils now in the Schools have reason to be grateful to our good brother for his timely help at the last moment . '

* * Bro . J . D . Langton , the Hon . Secretary of the Provisional Management Committee of the Boys' School , is asking in our correspondence columns for donations of pictures and prints for the decorations of the rooms , as well as any indoor games and books for the

amusement of the boys during the winter evenings . Many brethren , we feel sure , will respond to this appeal . Nothing tends so much to raise the tone and spirits of the young as artistic and cheerful surroundings , and it

must be in the power of the majority of our readers to present some such offering as the Committee ask for without missing it themselves . * * *

Our list of lodge meetings begins to show signs of extension , and its rapid growth from week to week will mark the flow of the Masonic tide , especially in the Metropolis , where the summer vacation is more observed than in the provinces . In another few weeks , lodges ,

chapters , and other bodies will be in full swing , and the ardent Mason will have ample opportunities of gratifying his longings for work and instruction in any of the Degrees or Orders he may have set his mind on , while his less ambitious brother may equally enjoy bis meeting at the social board .

The funeral of Bro . Mclntyre took place on Wednesday afternoon , at Highgate Cemetery . Notwithstanding the drenching downpour of rain , there was a large attendance of friends and representatives of the Bar and Freemasonry . Judge Paterson , of the Western

Circuit , and Dr . Braxton Hicks were amongst those present at the interment , and Mr . Cock , Q . C , Mr French , Q . C , Mr . J . C . Lawrence , Q . C , and Mr . George Candy , Q . C , sent representatives . Delegates attended

also from the Masonic lodges in South Wales , of which circuit the deceased was leader , while the Grand Lodge was represented by Bro . T . Fenn . Floral tributes were sent by Judge Paterson and the Incorporated Law Societies of Halifax , Dewsbury , and elsewhere .

In the Appendix to the Proceedings of 46 th the annual Communication of the Grand Lodge of Iowaheld in Sioux City on the 4 th June last and following days—are some interesting particulars as to the origin

of certain of the Grand Lodges in the United States of America . From these we learn that the Grand Lodge of Indiana was constituted b y five lodges , of which four were chartered by the Grand Lodge of Kentucky ; that

of Illinois by six lodges , four of which hailed from Missouri and two from Kentucky ; that of Tennessee b y eight lodges , all chartered b y North Carolina ; and that of Mississippi by three lodges , of which two were from Tennessee and one from Kentucky .

Turning next to Alabama , which started with nine lodges , we find that Kentucky contributed one of them , and North Carolina , South Carolina , Tennessee , and others the remaining eight . Two lodges chartered by Louisiana and one by Kentucky established the Grand

Lodge of Arkansas , while the Grand Lodge of California was constituted by four lodges hailing respectivel y from New Jersey , Connecticut , District of Columbia , and Minnesota . Nebraska furnished two and Kansas one of the three ori ginal lodges of

Colorado ; while Tennessee , Georgia , and Alabama chartered each one of the three constituent lodges of Florida . Three lodges from Oregon and one from Washington started the Grand Lodge of Idaho , and

the four lodges which founded the Grand Lodge of Iowa hailed from Missouri , whose four constituent lodges were chartered b y Tennessee , which , as we have shown , is descended from North Carolina , the majority of whose lodges were of English origin .
