Vanderbilt , daughter of the great American millionaire Commodore Vanderbilt , and will be solemnised in New York next month .

BRO . CAPTAIN LORD CHARLES BERESFORD , in command of the Medway Dockyard Reserve , Chatham , has been temporarily incapacitated from duty by an attack of rheumatism , which confined him to his bed . " THE STRANGE ADVENTURES OF MISS BROWN , " at the Vaudeville , reached the 100 th performance on Thursday last . The play , which is going very strong , will be tranferred to Terry ' s Theatre on the 7 th prox .

A NEW HOME FOR THE BLIND of North and North-East Lancashire , which has recently been erected at Fulwood , Preston , was opened on Monday by the Countess of Derby , who was accompanied by her husband , Bro . the Earl of Derby . THE SHAHZADA NASRULLA KHAN , accompanied by Sir Acquin Martin , the Afghan agent , arrived at Rome from Naples on Sunday night , and took up his abode at the Hotel Continental . On Wednesday his Highness returned to Naples , and left for Egypt on board the India Marine Steamer Clive .

IN CONSEQUENCE of the death of her Serene Highness the Princess of Battenberg . mother of Prince Henry of Battenberg and _ Prince Louis of Battenberg , R . N ., grandson-in-law of her Majesty , the Court went into mourning on Monday , will change it on Monday , the 30 th instant , and go out of it on Thursday , the 3 rd prox . BRO . J . . COOPER , as Sheriff-elect , was on Monday presented by his ward—the Ward of Cheap—with a beautiful chain and badge , which cost about £ 200 . The ceremony took place at Mercers' Hall , Cheapsi . de , and was attended by most of the principal residents in the ward , Dr . Fresh field presiding , and making the presentation .

GENERAL REGRET will be felt at the announcement that Bro . Alderman Sir George Tyler , ex-Lord Mayor , is lying seriously indisposed at his residence , his medical advisers having given peremptory orders that he is not to leave his bed for at least a month . Heart-weakness is held to be the cause of Sir George's illness , for his recovery from which he has our sincerest wishes .

THERE WAS A VERY large gathering of students and friends on Saturday last at the Westminster Technical Institute , which was founded some years ago by the Baroness Burdett-Coutts , the occasion being the unveiling of a bust of the Baroness . The ceremony was performed by Bro . W . Burdett-Coutts , M . P ., among those present being Bro . Admiral Sir H . Keppel and Sir E . Henderson .

A GRAND REVIEW of the veterans of the struggle in 1 S 70 , when the Italian troops entered Rome , took place in Rome on Monday in the presence of the King and Queen of Italy , the Prince of Naples , Signor Crispi , and the Ministers of War and Marine . The King , as he passed down the lines , addressed a few gracious words to each group , and then the whole body marched past his Majesty . The King and Queen were heartily cheered on leaving the ground .

A NUMBER cf the members of the Northampton Assistant Teachers' Association were returning from a picnic on the _ river Nene , when as they were in the lock near the paper mills the leading boat capsized , and the occupants , including two ladies , were thrown into the water . One of these was drawn under by the inrushing water , but just ? sall hope of saving her had gone , she floated to the surface and was taken to the shore , where consciousness was restored with great difficulty .

THE KING OF DENMARK , the King and Queen of Greece , and Prince Waldenvar of Denmark lunched with H . R . H . the Prince of Wales on Monday on board the Royal Yacht Osborne . Afterwards his Royal Highness paid a visit to the Russian Imperial Yacht Standard , which is being built at Copenhagen , and then to the free port , the construction of which is being proceeded with rapidly . In the evening their Royal Highnesses the Prince and Princess of Wales attended a performance at the Theatre

THE REGIMENTAL SPORTS of the Royal Scots Fusiliers took place on the Queen ' s Parade , Aldershot , on Monday , and , as the weather was delightful , the ground presented quite an animated appearance . Great amusement was caused by the black and white mop contest , in which two teams , each led by a commander mounted on a pony , and ai med with mops , covered in the one case with soot and in the other with dour , encountered each other . The colonel and his officers entertained a large number of friends on the occasion .

A NEW SIXPENNY ILLUSTRATED MAGAZINE , entitled "The Country House , " is announced to appear in October . The new venture will deal attractively with rural affairs , and appeal largely to country gentlemen . Among the writers who have promised to contribute are the Duke of Argyll , the Earl of VVinchilsea . the Marchioness of Carmarthen , Sir John Bennet Lawes , Bart ., John Strange Winter , " Son of the Marshes , " W . E . Norris , Grant Allen , Robert Barr , Norman Gale , Dr . Gordon Stables , R . N ., and others . " The Country House " will contain 120 pages of letterpress , and be fully illustrated . The editorial and publishing offices are at 30 , Fleet-street , London , E . C .

IN THE RAILWAY HOTEL , on the 19 th inst ., Bro . Robert Lunan , J . W ., was presented with a Master Mason's apron , subscribed for by several members of the St . John ' s Ledge , No . 137 , Bro . Mitchell , R . W . M ., presided , and made the presentation in a short speech , brimful of the affection and respect in which Bro . Lunan is held by his brother Masons . Bro . Lunan briefly replied . A pleasant evening was spent with song and sentiment . The presentation apron is a work of art . On the ( lap is the compass and square , with a wreath of Scots' thistles , signifying Bro . Lunan ' s native country , while at the bottom corners of the apron the star of India is displayed . BRO . VISCOUNT WOLSELEY on Monday paid a farewell visit to the Royal Irish Constabulary dep 6 t , Phoenix Park , and inspected the force stationed there . Bro . Lord Wolseley , who was accompanied by Colonel W . T . Kelly , C . B ., and his staff , was received by the Inspector-General , Sir Andrew R » id , and other principal constabulary officers , and , having- inspected the parade , he addressed the officers and men , praising them for their steady behaviour under arms , and congratulating them on the fine appearance they presented . He concluded by stating that during his time of service he had travelled through many countries , and he thought that for physique , general good conduct , and high standard of discipline , no force could equal them .

THE ATHLETIC CONTEST between representative teams of the London and New York Athletic Clubs took place on the Manhattan Ground on Saturday last , resulting in a complete victory for the Americans , who won every one of the 11 events on the card . C . Kilpatrick won the 880 Yards by 10 yards in 1 min . S 3 2-5 sec ; Wefers the 100 Yards by a foot from Bradley , the English champion , in 9 4-5 sees . ; Sweeney the High Jump , clearing 6 ft . easily , and after the contest C ft . 5 3-4 in . ; Conneff the Mile in 4 min IS 1-5 sees . ; and Wefers the 220 Yards in 21 3-5 sees . The Hurdles ( 120 yards )

fell to Chase after an exciting struggle , and so did the Quarter Mile to Brooke , who won on the tape . In the Hammer-throwing and Weight-putting as well as in the Long Jump , the Englishmen were beaten badly , _ Conneff won the Three Miles in 15 min . 38 1 . 5 sees , by some 150 yards from Wilkins . A banquet was held after the contest , at which the Mayor of New York presented the medals to the winners . World ' s records were established in the Half Mile , 100 Yards , and 220 Yards , and also in the Hurdles , but the last was disallowed , as Chase knocked over the first hurdle .

THE ROYAL SAVOY MARK LODGE OF INSTRUCTION will hold their first meetin in their new quarters at the Cock Hotel , Highbury , on the Gth prox ., at eight o ' clock Brethren of the Mark Degree are cordially invited . BRO . W . H . LONG , M . P ., President of the Board of Agriculture , has been ordered away for a change , and will leave England to-day ( Friday ) for Gibraltar . He expects to be absent from England for about three weeks .

IT HAS BEEN definitely arranged that H . R . H . the Prince of Wales will visit Lowther Castle in December instead of January , and great preparations are already being made in order to give a worthy reception to his Royal Highness . BRO . FIELD-MARSHAL LORD WOLSELEY , the new Commander-in-chief , kss promised to preside at the forthcoming anniversary , to be held in the King ' s Hall of the Holborn Restaurant , of the Royal Arsenal Association of Foremen .

THE ANNUAL ATHLETIC SPORTS of the ist battalion Scots Guards was held at the Victoria Barracks , Windsor , on Wednesday , under Col . Mildmay Wilson , C . B . There was a capital programme , and most of the events were well contested . WE ARE ASKED to state that the Prince Frederick William Chapter of Improvement will resume its meetings at the Eagle Tavern , Clifton-road , Maida Vale , W ., on Thursday , the 3 rd p : ox ., at 8 p . m ., and will continue same weekly until the end of April 1 S 96 . PRINCE AND PRINCESS HENRY and Prince Waldemar of Prussia , with their suite , arrived at Buckingham Palace early on Wednesday morning from Kiel . Their Royal Highnesses were met at the Victoria Station by Bro . Col . the Hon . H . Byng , Equerry to the Queen . WEDNESDAY was the 30 th anniversary of the relief of Lucknow , Sir Henry

Havelock having fought his way to the City and forced an entrance into the Residency , after some desperate fighting on the 25 th September , 1 S 57 . It will be remembered that Sir James Out ram , who had joined Havelock some 10 days previously , and was his senior officer , magnanimously left him to complete the task he had undertaken , and served on his staff .

THE FIRST Court of Aldermen which has been held since the Midsummer holidays , met at the Guildhall on Tuesday . Bro . Lord Mayor Renals presided , and great interest was exhibited in connection with the resignation of his seat in the Court by Alderman Sir Andrew Lusk , the letter in which the resignation was tendered having been written by the worthy Alderman on his S 6 th birthday . The Lord Mayor announced that he should summon a Court on Thursday , the 3 rd prox ., for the purpose ot filling the vacancy .

THE DUKE AND DUCHESS OF TECK , who have been the guests of the Earl and Countess of Hopetoun at their seat near Edinburgh , visited Linlithgow on Saturday last , accompanied by Bro . Lord Egerton of Tatton , the Countess of Jersey , and the Ladies Margaret and Mary Villiers . Among the places they visited was St . Michael ' s Church , which has been restored to the condition in which it was prior to its capture bj assault by Oliver Cromwell , and its being handed over to his dragoons for use as a stable .

A MEETING was held at Cardiff , under the presidency of the Mayor , on Monday afternoon , when a resolution was passed to the effect that steps be taken to give Bro . the Earl of Dunraven a hearty welcome on his return to England , in recognition of his repeated efforts to win the America Cup , and of his pluck , patriotism , and sterling character in endeavouring to maintain for British craft and seamen the premier position among yachtsmen and navigators of the world . A Committee was subsequently appointed to give effect to the resolution .

A BANQUET was held in the King's Hall of the Holborn Restaurant on Saturday last , when about 200 members of the Italian Colony in London , under the presidency of the Count Gallina , the Charge d'Affaires in London , sat down toabanquet held in honour of the 25 th Anniversary of the entry of the Italian troops into Rome . Among those present were several ladies and a number of the veterans of the Garibaldian and Italian armies . The proceedings were of a most enthusiastic character throughout . A congratulatory telegram was received during the evening fro n the Italian Ambassador .

BRO . SIR J . WHITTAKER ELLIS , BART ., as locum tenens for the Lord Mayor ( Bro . Sir Joseph Renals ) attended Divine service at Christ Church , Newgate-street , on Saturday last ( St . Matthew's Day ) , among those present being the Sheriffs , and Bro . Alderman Col . Davies , M . P ., Bro . Alderman Vaughan Morgan , and the Town Clerk , Bro . Sir J . B . Monckton . After service the Civic party adjourned to the Board Room of Christ ' s Hospital , when the lists of the Governors ot the Koyal Hospitals were nanded to the Acting Lord Mayor , and by him entrusted to the Town Clerk for safe custody among the City archives .

THERE IS little or no likelihood of any contest being provoked for the Aldermanic seat that Sir William ' s retirement occasions . All are agreed that there is one man who has a prior claim over everyone else—Bro . F . P . Alhston , who is from every point of view admirably fitted to become the chief of the ward with which he has been so long associated . A keen debater , a hard worker , and a shrewd man of business , he will make an Alderman thoroughly able to worthily uphold the traditions that centre round a seat at the Court of City Fathers . —City Press .

THE MATCH FOR THE "Iago" Challenge Shield was shot off between teams of four representing the British Museum and the Natural History Museum at the Park Range , near Tottenham , on Wednesday . At the conclusion of the firing it was announced that the British Museum team had won by 291 points to 280 . The ranges were 200 , 500 , and 600 yards , seven shots at each range . 1 ne same day and at the same distanes the London Irish Rifles had their annual competition for their Challenge Cup , which was won by Captain Denman with a score of 60 points , five shots at each of the three ranges already mentioned .

PRESENTATION TO A SHERIFF ELECT . —On Thursday , at the Aldgate Ward Schools , a meeting was held , under the presidency of Mr . Deputy . Pearse Morrison , to present a Sheriff ' s badge and chain to Mr . Alderman Pound , bnerilt elect , the Alderman of the Ward . The presentation was made by Mr . Alban H . Gibbs , M . P ., who referred to the work that had been done by Mr . Alderman Pound , and said it was no new thing for Mr . Pound to have honours bestowed upon him by the City of London . He feared

Alderman Pound was likely to have a very busy time during the coming year , but he knew that the duties devolving upon Mr . Pound would be conscientiously discharged . It was , therefore , with great pleasure that he presented the badge on behalf of the inhabitants of the Ward . Alderman Pound , in responding , said he was very grateful for the honour that had been conferred upon him . He thanked them , not only on account of the intrinsic value of the gift , but especially for the goodwill which he knew accompanied the presentation . BRO . VISCOUNT WOLSELEY on Monday paid a farewell visit to the Royal Irish Constabulary dep 6 t , Phoenix Park , and inspected the force stationed there . Bro . Lord Wolseley , who was accompanied by Colonel W . T . Kelly , C . B ., and his staff , was received by the Inspector-General , Sir Andrew R » id , and other principal constabulary officers , and , having- inspected the parade , he addressed the officers and men , praising them for their steady behaviour under arms , and congratulating them on the fine appearance they presented . THE ATHLETIC CONTEST between representative teams of the London and New York Athletic Clubs took place on the Manhattan Ground on Saturday last , resulting in a complete victory for the Americans , who won every one of the 11 events on the card . C . Kilpatrick won the 880 Yards by 10 yards in 1 min . S 3 2-5 sec ; Wefers the 100 Yards by a foot from Bradley , the English champion , in 9 4-5 sees . ; Sweeney the High Jump , clearing 6 ft . easily , and after the contest C ft . 5 3-4 in . ; Conneff the Mile in 4 min IS 1-5 sees . ; and Wefers the 220 Yards in 21 3-5 sees . The Hurdles ( 120 yards )

fell to Chase after an exciting struggle , and so did the Quarter Mile to Brooke , who won on the tape . In the Hammer-throwing and Weight-putting as well as in the Long Jump , the Englishmen were beaten badly , _ Conneff won the Three Miles in 15 min . 38 1 . 5 sees , by some 150 yards from Wilkins . A banquet was held after the contest , at which the Mayor of New York presented the medals to the winners . THE FIRST Court of Aldermen which has been held since the Midsummer holidays , met at the Guildhall on Tuesday . Bro . Lord Mayor Renals presided , and great interest was exhibited in connection with the resignation of his seat in the Court by Alderman Sir Andrew Lusk , the letter in which the resignation was tendered having been written by the worthy Alderman on his S 6 th birthday . The Lord Mayor announced that he should summon a Court on Thursday , the 3 rd prox ., for the purpose ot filling the vacancy .

THE DUKE AND DUCHESS OF TECK , who have been the guests of the Earl and Countess of Hopetoun at their seat near Edinburgh , visited Linlithgow on Saturday last , accompanied by Bro . Lord Egerton of Tatton , the Countess of Jersey , and the Ladies Margaret and Mary Villiers . Among the places they visited was St . Michael ' s Church , which has been restored to the condition in which it was prior to its capture bj assault by Oliver Cromwell , and its being handed over to his dragoons for use as a stable .

A MEETING was held at Cardiff , under the presidency of the Mayor , on Monday afternoon , when a resolution was passed to the effect that steps be taken to give Bro . the Earl of Dunraven a hearty welcome on his return to England , in recognition of his repeated efforts to win the America Cup , and of his pluck , patriotism , and sterling character in endeavouring to maintain for British craft and seamen the premier position among yachtsmen and navigators of the world . A Committee was subsequently appointed to give effect to the resolution .

A BANQUET was held in the King's Hall of the Holborn Restaurant on Saturday last , when about 200 members of the Italian Colony in London , under the presidency of the Count Gallina , the Charge d'Affaires in London , sat down toabanquet held in honour of the 25 th Anniversary of the entry of the Italian troops into Rome . Among those present were several ladies and a number of the veterans of the Garibaldian and Italian armies . The proceedings were of a most enthusiastic character throughout . A congratulatory telegram was received during the evening fro n the Italian Ambassador .

BRO . SIR J . WHITTAKER ELLIS , BART ., as locum tenens for the Lord Mayor ( Bro . Sir Joseph Renals ) attended Divine service at Christ Church , Newgate-street , on Saturday last ( St . Matthew's Day ) , among those present being the Sheriffs , and Bro . Alderman Col . Davies , M . P ., Bro . Alderman Vaughan Morgan , and the Town Clerk , Bro . Sir J . B . Monckton . After service the Civic party adjourned to the Board Room of Christ ' s Hospital , when the lists of the Governors ot the Koyal Hospitals were nanded to the Acting Lord Mayor , and by him entrusted to the Town Clerk for safe custody among the City archives .

THE MATCH FOR THE "Iago" Challenge Shield was shot off between teams of four representing the British Museum and the Natural History Museum at the Park Range , near Tottenham , on Wednesday . At the conclusion of the firing it was announced that the British Museum team had won by 291 points to 280 . The ranges were 200 , 500 , and 600 yards , seven shots at each range . 1 ne same day and at the same distanes the London Irish Rifles had their annual competition for their Challenge Cup , which was won by Captain Denman with a score of 60 points , five shots at each of the three ranges already mentioned .

PRESENTATION TO A SHERIFF ELECT . —On Thursday , at the Aldgate Ward Schools , a meeting was held , under the presidency of Mr . Deputy . Pearse Morrison , to present a Sheriff ' s badge and chain to Mr . Alderman Pound , bnerilt elect , the Alderman of the Ward . The presentation was made by Mr . Alban H . Gibbs , M . P ., who referred to the work that had been done by Mr . Alderman Pound , and said it was no new thing for Mr . Pound to have honours bestowed upon him by the City of London . He feared

Alderman Pound was likely to have a very busy time during the coming year , but he knew that the duties devolving upon Mr . Pound would be conscientiously discharged . It was , therefore , with great pleasure that he presented the badge on behalf of the inhabitants of the Ward . Alderman Pound , in responding , said he was very grateful for the honour that had been conferred upon him . He thanked them , not only on account of the intrinsic value of the gift , but especially for the goodwill which he knew accompanied the presentation .
