RELICS OF LORD NELSON . —On Saturday last , the 21 st instant , the third celebration of the anniversary of the hero of Tra . algar took place , under the auspices of the Navy League , at Trafalgar-square , around the base of the Nelson Column . As on previous occasions , it was garlanded . There were many votive offerings of laurel wreaths and flower decorations placed around the steps , at the base , deposited by branches of the Navy League and private individuals . The dense fog , however , which prevailed during the day proved a sad drawback to the general effect , causing even
the electric lights , which encircled thc column , to pale their brilliant splendour . In spite of the horrible weather , the crowd of patriotic spectators was so tremendous that those who wished , as far as the fog permitted , to see the decorations were compelled to form a queue , as though at the pit door of a theatre . To while away the dreary waiting , as the people with slow steps walked around the base , somebody started singing , and , for a considerable time , a roar of patriotic voices rose above the fog and filthy air . " God save the Queen , " "Rule Britannia , " "The Death of
Nelson , " and "Soldiers of the Queen , '' were sung over and overagiin . It is gratifying to state that in spite of the tremendous pressure , the crowd wis orderly and wellbehaved . " On Saturday last there was exhibited in one of the front windows of Pears Soap , Ltd ., New Oxford-stieet , the silver plate presented at Lloyd ' s Coffee House , in the city of London , by the shipping world to the heroic and
immortal Nelson in recognition of his great achievement at the battle of Copenhagen , fought 2 nd April , 1 S 01 . This plate consists of tea and coffee services , salt cellars and spoons , pepper castors , and wine coolers ( 21 ; each article has Lord Nslson ' sarmorial bearingsengraved thereon . The Court of Directors of the Bank of England , at their meeting on Thursday , had under consideration the question of a contribution to the Fu : id , and granted a donation of . £ 5000 . The Bank desired to make no specific indication in regard to its application .
A COMMENCEMENT has been made with the work which will carry into practical effect the idea originated by Mr . G . tf . Watts , R . A ., of constructing a memorial cloister in the " Postmen's Park , " Aldersgate , for the names and deeds of everyday heroes and heroines . Mr . Watts , who will defray the cost , has conceived a very simple design , consisting of a red-t led roof , sloping from the wall to a height of 7 ft . from the ground . The lloor , which will be about 7 ft . wide , will also be red tiled , and the covered way will extend a distance of 50 ft . Above the seats are to be placed a number of numoiial tablets , which will contain a recoid of the names and heroic achievements of all those who deserve the Victoria Cross of Peace .

THE MANCHESTER SHIP CANAL COMPANY have decided to promote in Parliament a bill enabling them to acquire the Manchester Racecourse for the extension of thc docks , storage , and railway accommodation . The canal runs along one side of the racecourse . On Thursday , the Consultative Committee of the Manchester Corporation passed a resolution approving of the bill . LORD MAYOR ' NEW FUND . —About £ 30 , 000 had been subscribed down to Thursday night towards the Lord Mayor's Fund at the Mansion House for the widows and orphans of the the soldiers and sailors killed in the war ( including officers ) , for the sick and wounded under treatment , for soldiers disabled from service , and for the wives and families of men serving with the Colours . The Court of Directors of the Bank of England , at their meeting on Thursday , had under consideration the question of a contribution to the Fu : id , and granted a donation of . £ 5000 . The Bank desired to make no specific indication in regard to its application .
A COMMENCEMENT has been made with the work which will carry into practical effect the idea originated by Mr . G . tf . Watts , R . A ., of constructing a memorial cloister in the " Postmen's Park , " Aldersgate , for the names and deeds of everyday heroes and heroines . Mr . Watts , who will defray the cost , has conceived a very simple design , consisting of a red-t led roof , sloping from the wall to a height of 7 ft . from the ground . The lloor , which will be about 7 ft . wide , will also be red tiled , and the covered way will extend a distance of 50 ft . Above the seats are to be placed a number of numoiial tablets , which will contain a recoid of the names and heroic achievements of all those who deserve the Victoria Cross of Peace .
