Bro. Alderman Newton, Lord Mayor Elect Of The City Of London.
our contemporary , however , shows that , though as an actual fact no nomination was needed , he was nominated pro forma by Bro . J . C . Parkinson , who claimed that a wholesome example of unanimity would be shown to the outer world by the Corporation meeting the wishes of the Alderman next in rotation for the civic chair , and returning as one of the Sheriffs the friend whom he had recommended to the liverv . The other candidates before the
electors were Alderman Gray and Mr . A . T . Hawkins , and on the show of hands the present Lord Mayor elect and the Alderman were returned by a substantial majority . A poll , however , was demanded , and the two candidates who were successful at the Common Hall were returned triumphantly at the head of the poll . It is interesting to note in this connection that in his address of thanks to the livery , the Lord Mayor elect referred to the
exception taken by several liverymen to his candidature on the ground that he was not versed in public matters , and had no knowledge of municipal affairs . There was , he declared , in his opinion , no absolute necessity for a Sheriff of London and Middlesex to be mixed up in the mysteries of vestrydom . With regard to the Alderman ' s year of office as Sheriff , it is needful to say but little . Events of interest and national importance
followed one another in rapid succession , and at the close it was the unanimous consensus of opinion that the year had been useful to an extent probably without parallel in the history of the City of London . It will be sufficient at the present moment to refer to the fact that in the course of the twelvemonth Prince George of Wales , now the Duke of York , was admitted to the freedom , and that a similar compliment
was paid to Lord Dufferin by the Corporation on his return to England at the ciose of his term of office as Viceroy of India . Another notable event was the visit of the Shah of Persia to the city , and further incidents of interest included the banquet given by the Lord Mayor to Mr . Phelps on his departure from England , the visit of the Lord Mayor and Sheriffs to the Pacis Exhibition , the grand banquet and ball given at the Guildhall to
celebrate the 700 th anniversary of the Mayoralty , and the raising of a fund at the Mansion House for the relief of the great famine in China . For a short while after his retirement from the shrievalty Bro . Newton could claim no actual association with the Corporation . On , however , a vacancy occurring in the ward of Bassishaw by the death of Bro . Alderman Stone , he issued an address to the electors , and became a candidate for the vacancy .
Several aspirants for the office announced their candidature , but one by one they retired from the field , and on the day of election only the present Lord Mayor elect , and Mr . W . H . Harris , J . P ., then one of the Sheriffs , presented themselves to the electors . After a spirited contest the result was the election of Bro . Newton by a majority of 41 , the votes being 176 against 135 . Of the Alderman ' s career since his admission to the Court of
City Fathers it is needful to say nolhing save that he has in all respects justified the confidence reposed in him , and as a magistrate and a corporator has proved himself one of the most active and hard-working corporators of the " upper house . " With regard to his association with the livery companies it may be mentioned that he is associated with the Fanmakers , the Shipwrights , the Framework Knitters , and the Loriners' Companies . For several years
past he has been actively identified with limited liabilitiy enterprise , but more especially with Harrod ' s Stores and T . H . Evans and Company , to both of which he has rendered invaluable assistance in the capacity of Chairrrlan . He is also a member of our Order , and has already won distinctions in our ranks . He is a Past Mas ' er of the Grafton Lodge , No . 2347 ; while in 1 S 97 , when it was proposed to form a lodge in connection with Harrod ' s Stores , Bro . Alderman Newton took a deep interest in the
scheme , and having as one of the founders done all in his power to ensure the success of the venture , was chosen by his co-founders their W . M . designate ; and early in 18 9 S , when the lodge , which was named the " Alfred Newton " in his honour , and ranks as No . 2686 , had been consecrated , was installed in office as the first W . Master . He is also a Life Governor of the Boys' School and Benevolent Institution , and at the Centenary Festival of the former acted as Steward for the lodge which bears his
name . Bro . Alderman Newton married , just 25 years ago , Miss Watson , the eldest daughter of Mr . Joseph Watson , of Mill House , Mitcham , and their family consists of a son ( who has recently been called to the Bar ) and a daughter . His residence is The Wood , Sydenham Hill .

M . of the lodge had received a similar jewel , he ( the I . P . M . ) should always wear his with pride , because , in addition to the
usual Master's duties of the chair , he felt himself entitled to it on account of the miles of study that he had waded through in preparing the series of Masonic lectures he had delivered to the brethren during his year of olfice , and concluded by stating that the Master ' s jewel would be prized above all others , as it was the result of a happy year of office , and what appeared to be an instructive one to the brethren . He had visited No . 13 S 1 many times and he always admired the spirit of harmony that prevailed .
The toast of " The VV . M . " was given in happy terms by Bro . George Everett , lie regretted that the I . P . M . was not present in order to submit the pledge . However , it afforded him ungratified satisfaction to propose the toast . His old friend and their visitor that evening , Bro . Harry Price , had spoken well and deservedly so of Bro . Davis ' s excellent working . He—the speaker—thoroughly endorsed every word that he had used . Thc Kennington Lodge was a good lodge , and it was worthy of its destinies , being presided over by a good Master . ihe W . M . was an initiate of the lodge , had been a good attendant at lodges of instruction , and a most zealous officer . In conclusion , he trusted that other aspirants to the chair would endeavour to emulate so excellent an example .

M . of the lodge had received a similar jewel , he ( the I . P . M . ) should always wear his with pride , because , in addition to the
usual Master's duties of the chair , he felt himself entitled to it on account of the miles of study that he had waded through in preparing the series of Masonic lectures he had delivered to the brethren during his year of olfice , and concluded by stating that the Master ' s jewel would be prized above all others , as it was the result of a happy year of office , and what appeared to be an instructive one to the brethren . The lodge was then closed . A banquet followed , and was well served under ths personal superintendence of Bro . Brinkley , the jovial host of "The Horns . "
Bro . Harry Price , P . G . Std . Br ., acknowledged the toast of" The Grand Officers . " After paying a high tribute of respect to the great Masonic qualities of the Pro Grand Master and thc Deputy Grand Master , he congratulated the Kennington Lodge upon possessing two old and respected members who wore the distinguished purple of Grand Lodge . He also complimented the VV . M . upon his excellent working , which , he said , would have do . ne credit to a Mason of a far older standing in the Craft .
