their confidence , and would be one of the most conspicuous and successful Masters that had ever filled the chair of the Pattison Lodge . Bro . Sydney Horton having played a brilliant violin solo , the W . M ., in returning thanks , said that after the exquisite music they had just heard , he felt that it would be out of place for him to make a speech , or at least more than a very brief

one , especially as several of the brethren and visitors were about to depart by train , which , like " tide and time , waited for no man . " It , however , would be somewhat wrong on his part if he did not thank Bro . Hughes for the kind way in which he had proposed the toast of his ( the W . M . ' s ) health . He now did so , and also thanked the brethren for the cordial manner in which they had received it , and could assure

them that nothing should be wanting on his part to achieve the high standard of merit attained by his predecessors in the chair which he now occupied . Bro . Herman , in responding for the toast of "The Visitors , " said that as his name had been coupled with the toast by the W . M ., he should obey the commands of the W . M . and respond , although he would have preferred to

have given them a little recitation . His speech would be one of regret , because , although he had had several invitations , he regretted not having visited the Pattison Lodare before , but after witnessing the excellent working of their W . M ., which had delighted him by its reverential solemnity , and after partaking of their " common-sense" banquet , and last , though not least , having enjoyed their artistic and

delightful harmony , he would promise them to have no more regrets , but to come and see them again . After paying a deserved tribute to the officers and choir for their efficient services during the ritual , he concluded by thanking them for the pleasure his visit had afforded him . Bro . Vansittart regretted the unavoidable absence of the W . M . of the Ordnance Lodge , which lodge he had the

honour to represent that evening , and thanked the W . M . and brethren of the Pattison Lodge for their hospitality . Bro . Grant said it was always a great pleasure for the " Nelsons " to visit the Pattison Lodge . He knew that the Pattison Lodge claimed to be the " premier lodge " in the district , and felt sure that it had great claims to the title . He hoped to see a goodly number of the " Pattisons "

at the Nelson Lodge on the third Wednesday of the month , when he felt sure they would be received with the same hospitality that had been extended to the visitors that night . "The Initiates" were toasted , and severally returned thanks . Bro . Coupland eloquently responded to the toast of " The Past Masters . "

A special toast to the esteemed Chaplain , Bro . the Rev . Horsley , afforded that brother an opportunity of delighting the brethren with one of his witty and appropriate anecdotes . " The Officers " and Tyler ' s toast concluded the proceedings , which were supplemented by some fine playing by Bro . Horton on the violin , Bro . Tyler accompanying , and some excellent singing by Bro . Nell and others .

ROCHDALE . St . Chad ' s Lodge ( No . 1129 ) . —The St . John ' s Festival of this lodge was celebrated on Wednesday , the 18 th inst ., at theRoebuck Hotel , when a full musical service was sung , and efficiently conducted by Bro . C . Parker , Org ., and the excellent working of the lodge gave great satisfaction to the large number of brethren present .

The retiring W . M ., Bro . Wm . Whitehead , had the pleasure of installing his successor , Bro . W . A . Wright , in the chair . The W . M . appointed and invested the following brethren as his officers : Bros . J . W . Hartley , S . W . ; T . Hargreaves , J . W . ; P . Lee , P . M ., Chap . ; J . Hadfield , P . M ., P . P . J . G . D ., Treas . ; E . T . Fletcher , P . M ., Sec . ; S . L . Lee , S . D . ; A . Crabtree , J . D . ; W . Whitehead ,

l . P . M ., D . C ; C . Parker , Org . ; J . T . Clegg , Deputy Org . ; J . Smith , LG . ; T . H . Williams , P . M ., Charity representative ; J . T . Ogden , W . Norris , S . Kaye , and T . Fairbank , Stwds . ; and W . Swift , P . M ., Tyler . The l . P . M . has enjoyed a very successful and harmonious year , every attention having been paid to the instruction lodges , and generally sustaining the good reputation of the

lodge , which is rapidly growing in membership . Deep sympathy was expressed amongst the brethren with the W . M . elect , whose brother lay on his death-bed and who expired a few hours after he was installed in the chair . Under the circumstances he retired immediately after the ceremony , much to the regret of all the brethren . The l . P . M . took the chair in his absence , the rest of the evening

being spent as pleasantly as could well be expected under the sad circumstances . The menu was all that could be desired . Songs and recitations were given between the toasts by Bros . C . Parker , W . Norris , L . Speke , T . L . Roberts , T . Nuttall , C . E . Collingwood , and J . M . L . Chadwick .

This being the 25 th anniversary of the lodge , the brethren presented their photographs—which were very handsomely framed and gave great satisfaction to all present—as a mark of esteem and as a memento of his year of office during the anniversary year . They also presented the l . P . M . with a very handsome Masonic album containing their photos .

SAFFRON WALDEN . Walden Lodge ( No . 1280 ) . —The anniversary meeting of this lodge was held at the Rose and Crown Hotel , on the 16 th inst ., when Bro . Stebbing Leverett , P . M ., P . P . G . D ., was installed as W . M . for the ensuing year , the ceremony being ably performed by Bro . the Rev . Thomas Lloyd , l . P . M . 2342 , Prov . G . Chap . In the

course of the evening the retiring VV . M ., Bro . Jas . Foster , Prov . Deputy G . D . of C , remarked upon the paucity of work there had been in the lodge during the year just closed , and being anxious not to leave the chair without doing something to mark his year of office , he had thought that a painting of his own of one of the members of the lodge to hang upon the walls of their lodge-room would

not be unacceptable . His thoughts naturally turned to Bro . Bell , who was a founder of their lodge and the father of Freemasonry in their midst , and Bro . Bell having kindly given his consent , and also several sittings , the result he had now the pleasure to offer to the lodge for its acceptance . The portrait was then uncovered amidst loud

and continued applause . It is a three-quarter length por-•trait in oils , and represents Bro . Joseph Bell in full Craft clothingas P . P . J . G . W . Essex . All present agreed that it was a striking likeness , and the execution of the picture was greatly admired . "The Health of Bro . Bell " having been cordially drunk , Bro . Bell , P . M ., whose rising was the signal for a fresh

demonstration of applause , said in all his life he had never been placed in such a difficult position . He thanked the brethren for the kind way they had received the gift of their I . P . M ., and he also appreciated most highly the feeling that had prompted Bro . Foster to undertake so much labour in his honour . He certainly had felt a great interest in Freemasonry during- more years perhaps than he cared to

remember , and the prosperity of the Walden Lodge was particularly dear to him . The inscription on the picture is as follows : " Bro . Joseph Bell , founder of Walden Lodge , No . 12 S 0 , P . M . 441 and 12 S 0 , P . P . S . G . D . Cambs ., P . P . J . G . W . Essex . P . Z . 441 Painted and presented by Bro . Geo . Foster , W . M . 12 S 0 , P . D . G . D . C . ST . MARY CRAY . Crays Valley Lodge ( No . 2147 ) . —The annual meeting of this lodge for the installation of a new VV . E . T . Gething , 1223 ; R . F . Whur , 901 ; H . Line , 1658 ; Walter W . Arter , Org . 1572 ; and C . A . Hooper , S . W . 1613-The lodge , having been opened , the W . M . passed Bro . W . J . Lord to the Second Degree , and afterwards initiated Mr . Herbert Moates Ellis , and the brethren elected Bro . Latham Augustus , of the Withall Lodge of Harmony , South

Australia , as a joining member . Bro . Harlow then installed Bro . Harry Algar as Master of the lodge for the ensuing year , and did the whole of the work perfectly . Bro . Har- / low was invested as I . P . M ., and the following brethren received the various officers' collars : Bros . Sydney Matthews , S . W . ; J . Marshall , J . W . ; Henry Tyrer , P . M ., Treas . ; John Pollard , P . M ., Sec . ; William Lee ,

S . D . ; R . J . Pugh , J . D . ; E . H . Rolfe , P . M ., D . C ; John Otway , I . G . ; W . E . Bailey , Org . ; J . T . Cookson and Frank Stanger , Stwds . ; and W . Tapsell , Tyler . The l . P . M ., Bro . Harlow , jun ., was elected representative of the lodge on the Charity Committee of the Province of Kent . On his motion , seconded by Bro . Sydney Matthews , a vote of congratulation was passed to Bro . Joynson on his

being appointed by Earl Amherst as Prov . J . G . D ., together with the lodge ' s thanks to the Prov . G . M . for the honour he had conferred on the Crays Valley Lodge by making that appointment . Bro . Joynson , P . M ., in acknowledging the vote , said he appreciated it very much indeed . Hisonly regret was that the first Past Master of the lodge , Bro . Roge , had not had the honour , and he wrote to the

Provincial Grand Master , asking him if he did not think Bro . Rolfe should be preferred . However , having been appointed , he should do everything he could for the Provincial Grand Lodge , for the Crays Valley Lodge , and for Masonry generally . The W . M . then said he had the pleasing duty to perform of presenting a Past Master ' s jewel to Bro . Harlow , which had been unanimously voted

to him by the lodge . All the brethren were aware how well during the past year Bro . Harlow had performed his work in the Crays Valley Lodge , how genial he had been in his working , and how admirably his work had gone on . The lodge was extremely proud of him . He would make one further observation . The lodge was a young one , and many of the members of it were young Masons , and were

able to benefit by the experience of those who had preceded them and assisted them in the lodge and in the lodge of instruction . The assistance given had been of benefit to all of them . In placing the jewel on Bro . Harlow's breast he was adding it to his other honours , and the brethren trusted Bro . Harlow would live long to wear it . Bro . Harlow , I . P . M ., in reply , thanked the W . M . for his kind expressions ,.

and the brethren for their cordial reception of them . He thanked all the brethren of the lodge for their kindness to him during his year . If he had done any good to the lodge he was glad of it , and if he could do anything for it in the future he should be happy to do it . The Worshipful Master said he had another pleasing duty before him . When the Crays Valley Lodge was

founded a Charitable Fund in connection with the lodge of instruction was formed , and a great many brethren joined it . During the four years it lasted they had been able to send up the large sum of upwards of ^ ' 200 to the Masonic Institutions . Bro . Rolfe was President of the little Institution and it was named after him . _ When the Institution died a natural death in four years it was determined by the

brethren to present Bro . Rolfe with a Charity jewel as a mark of their sense of his great efforts in the cause of Masonic Charity . That jewel he now begged to present to him , and in doing so he would express the same feeling he had expressed to Bro . Harlow , that he might live long towearthejewel . Bro . Rolfe , P . M ., inacknowledgingthegift , said it hadcome upon him unawares , for he knewnothingabout

it when he entered the lodge . When the lodge of instruction was started he thought it would be well to start a Benevolent Fund , because a brother could not always give ten guineas at once to one of the Charities , but by small subscriptions he could do so . He was proud of what the Crays Valley Lodge had done . As there so many brethren present that evening it boded well for the system going on . He hoped

that it would go on and that they would be able to subscribe to all the Institutions . The lodge was then closed , and an elegant banquet followed at the Public Library . The usual toasts were afterwards honoured . Bro . Harlow , I . P . M ., in proposing "The W . M ., " said the brethren had that night taken to themselves a new

Master , and he trusted that during Bro . Algar ' s year , which he knew would be a successful one , they would never regret the selection they had made . He hoped also that Bro . Algar would never regret he was Master of the Crays Valley Lodge . Bro . Algar would do his work thoroughly . He ( Bro . Harlow ; little thought five years ago , when the lodge was first founded ( he was not a founder himself ) ,

that he would be Master . He was there the first night at the consecration of the lodge , and at the following meeting , when Bro . Algar was the first initiate , he ( Bro . Harlow ) acted as J unior Deacon . He deaconed him aiso in the other Degrees , and it was a great pleasure that night to have to install him . During the five years' existence of the lodge

he had had the pleasure of attending the lodge of instruction , and it was very pleasing to see the first initiate go into the Master ' s chair . Ihe Crays Valley Lodge had a great future before it ; it was one ot the best conducted lodges in the province , because it had a very good body of men and Masons in it . If brethren were going to work up to the chair they must go to lodges of instruction , for no one could

have given them a little recitation . His speech would be one of regret , because , although he had had several invitations , he regretted not having visited the Pattison Lodare before , but after witnessing the excellent working of their W .

Bro . M . has enjoyed a very successful and harmonious year , every attention having been paid to the instruction lodges , and generally sustaining the good reputation of the

lodge , which is rapidly growing in membership .

M . was held on Saturday , the 14 th inst ., at the Public Hall , under the presidency of Bro . G . Harlow , jun ., W . M . There was a large attendance of members of the lodge and visitors . E .
