attain to the position reached by the W . M . that night unless he had learned the ritual well . Bro . Algar , W . M ., replying , said he was specially obliged to the l . P . M . for the kind things he had been pleased to say of him , but ever since he was initiated in Masonry he had tried his utmost to do his duty as a Mason . He was initiated at the first business meeting of the lodge , and one

of his duties he must say he had fulfilled to the utmost of his ability—he had never been absent from a meeting of the lodge , and had never been late . In another respect he had also tried his best—at the lodge of instruction ; and during his year of office he should do everything he possibly could for the comfort and pleasure of the brethren . Bro . Algar , in proposing "The Initiates , " said he hoped

that during his year he would have several initiates , and he wished Bro . Ellis health and prosperity . They were all sure he would make a worthy member of the lodge . Bro . Ellis , in reply , said he was inclined at first to think he was in an awkward position . Such , however , was not the case , it was a grand position ; he felt himself that evening in the grandest position he had ever occupied . He had

been initiated into that great mystery of which everyone that belonged to it was proud . Those who did not belong to it wished they did , and wondered why they did not . He could not thank the brethren sufficiently for having elected him one of their number . He recognised that Freemasonry placed one in the fellowship of men , that it was the foundation of everything that existed , both in religion , in business ,

and in every condition in which men were brought in connection with one another . He realised that it was the foundation of everything that was good ; the world stood upon it ; they all stood upon it ; and he thanked God he ( Bro . Ellis ) stood upon it . Bro . Algar then gave " The Installing Master and the Past Masters of the Lodge , " saying they had the privilege

of having all the Past Masters of the lodge present that evening , which was a great pleasure . They all owed to the Past Masters all that was good in the lodge , and they could not be thanked enough . Bro . Harlow said he had great pleasure in doing his work that night , and he thought there was a very great deal of pleasure to be got out of it . He trusted that what he had done had met with the satisfaction of all the brethren . If

so , he was well repaid for the time and trouble taken in getting up the ceremony . Bros . Pollard and Rolfe also replied , and hoped the brethren would attend the lodge of instruction and join in getting up another Charitable Association . Bro . Rolfe said he promised every assistance he could give , both in

instructing in Masonry and forwarding a Charitable Association . Bros . Massey , Solomon , Lovegrove , and Hooper responded to the toast of " The Visitors . " The S . W . replied to the toast of "The Officers , " and , after the Tyler ' s toast the brethren concluded a most pleasant evening .

Drethren . Ihe lodge having been opened , the Deputy Grand Master was received and saluted , and the minutes of the previous meeting having been confirmed , he at once proceeded to install Bro . William Bailey into the chair of K . S . in his customary able and impressive manner . The officers invested were Bros . Joseph George , S . W . ; G . Hawkins ,

The ceremony having been completed , arrangements were made for the representation of the lodge at the

forthcoming Festival of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution . The decease of Bro . John Martin , one of the founders and first Secretary of the lodge , and which sad event had taken place on the previous day , was announced amidst expressions of great regret . The Deputy Prov . Grand _ Master proposed a vote of condolence with the sorrowing relatives , and it was decided that the lodge should

be fully represented when paying the last sad tribute ol respect to departed merit . Other routine business having been disposed of , the lodge was closed , and the brethren shortly afterwards re-united in the handsome assembly room of the Rose and Crown Hotel , where , under the direction of the host , Bro . J . George , S . W . of the lodge , a very recherche banquet was

provided , which gave general satisfaction . After the cloth had been cleared and grace sung , the customary loyal and Masonic toasts were given from the chair , and duly honoured . For " The Grand Lodge Officers , " Bro . James Terry , P . G . S . B ., replied in a capital speech very much to the

purpose . The Deputy Provincial Grand Master replied in equally felicitous terms to the toast which embraced himself and the rest of the Provincial Grand Officers of Suffolk , and again as Installing Master . "The Worshipful Master ' s Health" was drank with

enthusiasm , and a brief resume of the progress of this prosperous lodge gave much pleasure to his hearers . For "The Masonic Charities , " Bro . James Terry , Secretary of the Benevolent Institution , made an effective response , congratulating the lodge on the zeal evinced by members who had offered to undertake Stewardships on behalf of his particular Institution , and inducing an

immediate collection of ten guineas to supplement the proposed lodge donations and other liberal promises . For " The Visitors , " Bro . James Stevens expressed thanks for an unstinted hospitality and the pleasure afforded by the excellent work in lodge . Other brethren added their expressions of appreciation of both labour and refreshments .

" The Past Masters , " " The Officers , " "The Musical Brethren , " and the Tyler ' s toast completed the agenda , and brought a most pleasant evening to an agreeable termination . Beyond the compliments paid to the brethren who had the direction of the musical arrangements in their hands ,

Bros . A . Osmond and | J . Motum , both Past Masters of No 51 , Colchester , it is but fair to state that with the assistance of the choir boys brought over by them for that purpose , a well selected and not too lengthy concert added greatly to the success of this installation meeting , and the general enjoyment of those members of the Craft who had the privilege of attending .

SURBITON . St . Margaret's Lodge ( No . 1 S 72 ) . —On the 19 th inst . the brethren were summoned to witness the installation of Bro . John Hodgkin in the chair , at the Maple Hall , but , to the great regret of all , he was suffering from bronchitis , and unable to leave his house . There were present Bros . S . M . Cooke , W . SS 9 ; and others . The only business transacted was to receive the Auditors '

report and ballot for Dr . Garry , this last being unanimous in his favour . A resolution of sympathy with the W . M . elect was passed , and later on in the evening a telegram was sent to him , conveying an expression of regret at his absence from the banquet , and an earnest hope for his speedy recovery . The lodge being closed , the brethren took train to

Hampton Court , where , at the Mitre Hotel , they partook of one of Bro . Sadler ' s recherche banquets , served in that perfect style which is so well known to many lodges . The usual toasts were proposed , with intervals for vocal music contributed by members of the lodge and visitors . Bro . Col . Nettleship replied for "The Grand Officers , " and assured the W . M . that they were always pleased to

visit lodges to witness the working . In response to the toast in his honour , Bro . Colonel Money said that it was with great pleasure he accepted the invitation to this lodge , and having been given charge of the province he should endeavour to visit it at least once a year . He deeply sympathised with the W . M . elect and also with the members , for he could see how genuine was their regret

at the illness which had prevented the ceremony of installation being performed . What little work he had seen done was most satisfactory , and he should endeavour to attend the installation of Bro . Hodgkin at their next meeting . A most enjoyable evening was spent , and the visitors will not readily forget the very hospitable and cordial treatment met with at this lodge .

THORNE . St . Nicholas Lodge ( No . 2259 ) . —The meeting of this lodge was held at Peace Hall on Wednesday , the iSth inst ., when there were present Bros . S . H . C Asplin , W . M . ; J . H . D . The Secretary , as the oldest

member present , presented the W . M ., in the name of the lodge , with the very handsome jewel of a Past Master , which had been unanimously voted to him at the last meeting . Bro . A . Toulmin , jun ., modestly acknowledged the gift , and greatly regretted that he had not had the opportunity of installing his old friend , Bro . Lieut .-Col . Cuming ,

as W . M . that day . He hoped , however , that the honour was merely deferred . Bros . A . H . Gurney , E . W . Jenkins , H . Jenkins , and H . Purnell , S . W . ; John Sampson , J . W . ; J . Todd , P . M ., P . P . S . G . W ., Treas . ; H . Foster P . M ., Sec ; E . Carter , S . D . ; M . Bryson , J . D . ; A .

The lodge having been opened , the election respectively of W . M ., Treasurer , and Tyler took place . Bro . E . W . Purnell , S . W ., was unanimously elected W . M . for the ensuing year , and , in acknowledging the honour , thanked the brethren for having entrusted him with so responsible a position in so ancient a lodge . He touched upon the long roll of old Masters of this lodge , and , in asking the brethren

to give him assistance in his work , he said it would be his endeavour to so conduct the business during his year of office as should tend to this lodge being an honour to Freemasonry and affording the members the greatest possible happiness . Bro . Jos . Todd , _ P . M ., was then unanimously re-elected Treasurer , and , in replying , remarked that he had been thus honoured for the thirteenth time . It

was satisfactory to know that the lodge continued in a prosperous state , and he anticipated that the coming year would be a very happy one as far as that lodge was concerned . Bro . J . Hall was re-elected Tyler , and suitably acknowledged the honour . The Treasurer elect , Bro , Todd , moved that the sum of ten guineas be paid to the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution , at the Jubilee

Festival in February next , to be placed on the list of Bro . E . W . Purnell , S . W ., who will represent the lodge as Steward . In trie course of some remarks he urged the need of supporting the W . M . with their subscriptions on his representing the lodge at the Festival , as this is the most deserving of all Masonic Charities , inasmuch as it provided for the necessities of aged or infirm brethren who had in

time past done good service for the Craft . Unfortunately there were more candidates than could at present be assisted , and the authorities in London were anxious to increase their strength financially , therefore it was to be hoped the Province of York would do all possible to help . Bro . Geo . Kirby , P . M ., seconded , and after a brief discussion as to another matter bearing on the subject , the resolution was

unanimously adopted . The W . M . elect fixed the 21 st December next for his installation and banquet . Bros . Peck , P . G . Std . Br . England , P . G . Sec , and Shackles , P . M ., joined in congratulating the W . M . elect and wishing him a happy and busy year of office , the first-named speaker commenting upon the antiquity of the York Lodge and upon its orderly working . The lodge was then closed .

Cuming ,
