A convocation of the Grand Council of the Order of the Secret Monitor will be held at Mark Masons' Hall on Friday , Dec . 18 th . A performance of Robertson ' s play of "Caste" and " Locked Out" will be given in St . George ' s Hall on Thursday next , the 3 rd prox ., in aid of the Jewish Penny Dinners Fund .

The Earl and Countess of Iddesleigh and the Ladies Northcote have gone to St . Andrews for a few weeks for change of air , on account of Lord Iddesleigh , who has not been well lately . Bro . Lord George Hamilton , M . P . ( First Lord of the Admiralty ) , returned to his official residence in Whitehall , on Monday , from a visit to the Duchess Dowager of Abercorn , at Coates , Sussex .

On Tuesday last Bro . Aubrey M . Ohren ( younger son of Bro . Magnus Ohren , P . A . G . D . C . ) was installed as W . M . of the Frederick Lodge of Unity , No . 452 , Province of Surrey , in succession to Bro . David W . Sugg . A concert was given at the Royal Albert Hall , South Kensington , on . Sunday afternoon . A very excellent programme was provided , and the audience , which was very numerous , were much gratified by the manner in which it was carried out .

Lord Rothschild formally re-opened the spacious premises in Great Alie-street . Aldgate , as the Jewish Working Men's Club and Lads' Institute , on Tuesday evening . There was a large attendance , including the Chief Rabbi , and much enthusiasm .

On Saturday last the Lady Mayoress , who was accompanied by Bro . Lord Mayor Evans , Bros . Sheriffs Tyler and Foster , and attended by the Sword and Mace Bearers and the City Marshal , distributed the prizes to the successful members of the London Rifle Brigade at the Crystal Palace .

King Humbert , accompanied by the Ministers of Marine , War , and Agriculture , reviewed the Italian squadron , consisting of 14 ships of war , lying in the roads at Palermo , on Saturday last , his Majesty being heartily greeted by the people both on starting for and returning from the review .

Princess Christian of Schleswig-Holstein and her daughter , Princess Victoria , took part in a concert given by the Windsor and Eton Madrigal Society on the 1 nth inst . Her Rnyal Highness and her daughter sang in the madrigals and the former played a "Reverie" and a minuet on the piano . Bro . Walter Parratt , Past Grand Organist , of St . George ' s Chapel , conducted .

The Princess Loutse ( Marchioness of Lome ) attended the Sydenham High School on Saturday last for the purpose of presenting the prizes to the successful pupils and opening the new hall . Lord Aberdare presided , and among those present were the Marquis of Lome , Lady Frederick Cavendish , and Bro . Alderman Sir James Whitehead , Bart ., and Lady Whitehead .

Bro . Lord Mayor David Evans has been invited by the Executive Committee of the Musical and Dramatic Exhibition , which will be held next year in Vienna , to act as President of the Industrial Section of the British Department . His lordship has gathered together a good working committee of men learned in the musical and dramatic arts , and the first meeting at the Mansion House on Monday passed off very satisfactorily .

The latest reports as to the condition of Prince George of Wales are undoubtedly favourable . On Tuesday there was an increase of the febrile disturbance , but in the afternoon the abatement of the unfavourable symptoms was so decided that the Prince of Wales left Marlborough House for Luton Hoo . to pay a long promised visit to M . and Madame de Falbe . The Princess of Wales continues , however , to take an active part in nursing- her son .

Mr . M . A . Holbein , the amateur cyclist , last week accomplished the feat of breaking the record of 336 V miles in 24 hours . He commenced his task on Wednesday at midnight , and riding almost continuously with only a few short intervals , succeeded in covering the distance of 361

miles 144 6 yards . What greatly enhances the feat is that the weather for the first 12 hours was very unfavourable , while Mr . Holbein himself still felt the effects of the injuries he had received a short time previously through being ran into .

An attempt at burglary was made the other day at Bro . Lord Henniker ' s town residence in Grafton-street . When the housemaid came down in the morning she found that the back door had been broken open and a man ' s coat was lying on the ground . A policeman was at once called , and

on searching the premises a man named John Coyle was found concealed in the pantry with a number of articles gathered about him ready for removal . He was taken to the Marlborough-street Police Court , and in due course committed for trial .

The deepest regret is felt in Paris and here at the sudden death on Tuesday afternoon of the Earl of Lytton , her Majesty ' s Ambassador to the French Republic . The sad event occurred at the Embassy , and was caused by a spasm of the heart . His Excellency had been out of health for some time , but he had made such progress towards convalescence as to be able , though confined to his bed , to occupy himself with the affairs of the embassy . The deceased peer

had just completed his Goth year , having been born on the 8 th November , 1 S 31 , and was as distinguished in literature asm diplomacy . He had held his present post , in which he •succeeded the late Lord Lyons , only four years , and had previously served as Governor-General of India for a like period . He is succeeded in the title and estates by his eldest son , Viscount Knebworth , who was born at Simla in 1876 ,

We are very pleased to learn that the members of the Gavel Club have arranged to give a concert at the Royal Masonic Institution for Boys , Wood Green , on Dec . Sth . Bro . Sir H . Drummond Wolff , lately H . M . 's Minister to the Shah of Persia , returned to town from Balmoral last week , and has since left England to take up his post at Bucharest as Minister to King Charles of Roumania .

Lord and Lady Willoughby de Eresby arrived on Wednesday at their seat , Normanton Hall , Rutland , where they will entertain a large number of distinguished guests , including the Duke and Duchess of Teck . At the quarterly meeting of the Manchester Conservative Association held on the 23 rd inst . at the Conservative Club , Cross-street . Bro . Alderman Steven Chesters Thompson was unanimously elected Chairman of the Association , in succession to the late Sir Thomas Sowler .

Bro . John Taylor , the proprietor of the Essex Weekly News and several other papers , has been unanimously elected Mayor—the fourth Mayor—of the Borough of Chelmsford . Bro . Taylor was the pioneer of penny papers in Essex , and is a member of the Committee of the Newspaper Society .

The Committee of the National Society have voted £ 150 as agrant to the building fund of the new schools at Heaton Chapel , on the application of Bro . the Rev . John Henn , supported by the P . G . M . of Cheshire , Bro . Lord Egerton of Tatton , on condition of their customary clauses being inserted in the trust deed of the school .

Lord Coleridge and the Benchers of the Middle Temple entertained a number of distinguished guests at dinner in their hall on the lyth instant , the occasion being " Grand Night " of Michaelmas Term . Among those present were Prince Christian , the Duke of Teck , the Marquis of Salisbury , Viscount Barrington , Lord Aberdare , and others .

Bro . J . de Bels Adam , the Prov . S . G . W . of West Lancashire , has just been inducted into office as Mayor of Liverpool . Bro . Adam is a prominent member of our Order and an active supporter of our Institutions . He has also taken a leading part in the municipal affairs . We congratulate him on his election to so important an office .

The Duke of Connaught presided at a meeting of the Aldershot Military Society on Tuesday evening , when Admiral Colomb read an important paper on "Combined Naval and Military Operations . " The Duke expressed his belief that it would be an excellent thing both for the Army and Navy if opportunities were afforded the two services for disembarking troops at points like Portsmouth , Plymouth , Chatham , and other places .

Lord Mayor Evans , in the unavoidable absence of the Duke of Westminster , occupied the chair at the meeting of clergy and laity , held at Sion College , on the Victoria Embankment , on the 20 th inst ., when the Bishop of London was presented with a beautiful pastoral staff , designed by Sir A . Blomiield , A . R . A . Among those present were Bros . Sheriffs Alderman Tyler and Foster , Bro . Sir Reginald Hanson , Bart ., M . P ., and Mrs . Temple , wile of the Bishop .

'The marriage of Lady Sarah Spencer-Churchill , youngest daughter of the late Bro . the Duke of Marlborough and sister of Bro . Lord Randolph Churchill , M . P ., wuh Mr . Gordon C . Wilson , of the Royal Horse Guards , eldest son of Samuel and Lady Wilson , of Hughenden Manor , Bucks , and Grosvenor-squaie , was solemnised in bt . George ' s , Hanover-square , on Saturday last . Among those present were the Prince of Wales and the Duke of Cambridge . The ceremony was performed by the Archbishop of Canterbury .

Lady Ebury died at her husband s town residence , 35 , Park-street , Grosvenor-square , on Saturday last , in her S 4 th year , having been born in 1 S 0 S . She married Lord Robert Grosvenor , born in 1 S 01 , who in 1 S 57 was created Baron Ebury , and is the present father of the House of Lords , being rather more than a year older than Earl Grey , born in 1 S 02 . He is the sole surviving uncle of the Duke of Westminster , and the death of her ladyship will place a number of distinguished families in mourning .

There will be great doings in Denver , Colorado , in the months of July and August of next year , when the Mary Commandery of Knights Templar , No . 3 6 on the roll of the Grand Conclave ot Pennsylvania , will make a pilgrimage to the Denver Conclave in connection with the meeting of the Grand Encampment of the United States . The arrangements are of a must excellent character and moderate , and we doubt not the Mary Commandery will thoroughly enjoy its 33 days' pilgrimage .

At the last meeting of the Montefiore Lodge , No . 1017 , Bro . S . V . Abraham , P . M ., Treas ., Assist . G . Purst . England , was presented by the members with a full suit of Grand Lodge clothing and the jewel of his office as a mark of the esteem in which he is held , and in recognition of the honour conferred upon him and the lodge by his appointment to Grand Office . Bro . Abraham acknowledged the gift in suitable terms , and in his turn presented the lodge with a new and beautifully embroidered banner .

Sir R . H . Collins , K . C . B ., has officially notified Messrs . John Britismead and Sons , iS , Wigmore-street , that the Ouchess of Albany never grants formal warrants , but they aie welcome to state that they are under the patronage of her Royal Highness . Messrs . Brinsmead have , in addition ,

special appointments to several European Courts , and also that of pianoforte makers to her Royal Highness the Princess of Wales , under warrant dated February 20 th , 1 SS 9 , and the ririnsmead pianofortes have been supplied to her Majesty the Oueen at Balmoral .

The grand benefit at the Royal Aquarium in aid of the Gordon Boys' Home , which was originally intended to be held on Thursday only , will be extended , in consequence of the number of artistes who have proffered their services , and will be held to-day ( Friday ) and to-morrow ( Saturday )

as well . 'The benefit is under the patronage of the Duke of Connaught . The entertainments will be continuous each day from 10 a . m . to 11 . 30 p . m ., and the bands of the Royal Engineers , the Grenadier Guards , and the Duke of York ' s School will take part in the proceedings .

Miss Annie E . E . Smith , daughter of the Rev . S . J . Smith , of Enfield , has been awarded the honorary testimonial on vellum of the Royal Humane Society for saving the life of Mr . Alexander Pope from drowning off Dymchurch , near Folkestone , on September 21 st last .

Her Majesty has forwarded a portrait of herself to the Morley House Seaside Convalescent Home for Working Men , at St . Margaret's Bay , Dover , which is to be hung in the day-room of the new wing . To the Extension Fund a friend has promised I ' looo .

The movement to raise a memorial to the late Right Hon . W . H . Smith , M . P ., First Lord of the Treasury , is being very warmly taken up , not only by his colleagues , including the Marquis of Salisbury and Mr . Balfour , but also by people of every shade of political opinion .

The remains of Prince Louis Lucien Buonaparte , son of Lucien Buonaparte , Prince of Cassino , brother of the first Napoleon , were interred in the Roman Catholic Cemetery , Kensal Green , on the 20 th instant . Among those present at the mournful ceremony were Prince Louis Lucien Buonaparte and the Earl of Romney , representing the Queen .

The Worshipful Company of Loriners gave a grand banquet at Stationers' Hall , on Friday , the 20 th instant , the guests being invited expressly to meet the Lord Mayor and Sheriffs . His lordship was prevented by domestic bereavement from attending , but Bros . Sheriffs Foster and Alderman Tyler were present .

The remains of the late Bishop of Carlisle will be interred at Crosthwaite , Keswick , to-morrow ( Saturday ) in the burial ground wheie lies the remains of his second son . Simultaneously with the funeral service there will be held a memorial service at Carlisle Cathedral .

Lady Knutsford , as President of the Hampstead branch of the Children's Happy Evening's Association , presided at a gathering of children at the Haverstock Hill Board Schools on the 19 th inst ., and assisted in promoting for them a very pleasant evening .

Bro . Sir Augustus Harris has it in contemplation to give a Children ' s Ball at the Theatre Royal , Covent Garden , some time during Christmastide , one of the chief attractions of which will be a grand Christmas-tree laden with presents for the little guests .

An evening concert in aid of the London Throat Hospital will be given , by the kind permission of Mrs . Woakes , at 7 S , Harley-street , VV ., on Monday next , the 30 th instant . The musical arrangements are in charge of Bro . W . Ganz , and several well-known artistes have promised to give their services .

The Queen , accompanied by the Prince and Princess Henry ot Battenberg and their children , left Balmoral for Windsor Castle on the afternoon of Friday , the 20 th inst ., and reached their destination sately the following morning , ihe Court will remain at Windsor till shortly before Christmas , when it will move to Osborne .

The 15 th annual show of Christmas fat cattle was opened at the Agricultural Hall , Norwich , and is pronounced to have been one of the best held in the county . The Queen won the championship prize for the best beast in the " yard with a Devon bred at vVindsor , while the Prince of Wales took a first , second , and reserve with stock bred at bandringham , and also exhibited the best pen of sheep .

At a ball held at Adelaide in honour of the Australasian Squadron by the Earl and Countess of Kintore , at the Government House , each lady was dressed to represent a Mower . Lady Kintore appeared as a thistle , her two daughters as white heather and harebell , and Lady Charles bcott as laburnum . The gentlemen were only allowed to carry buttonholes of flowers . The ball room was decorated by Lady Kintore with almost every kind ot flower .

The collection of postage-stamps bequeathed to the trustees of the British Museum by the late Mr . Tapling , M . P ., has been received at the Museum from Mr . laphng ' s executors . It contains about 200 , 000 stamps , exclusive of a very large number of cards , envelopes ,

& c , and its value is eotimated at between , £ , 50 , 000 and , 1 , 0 o , ooo . Its late owner was occupied tor over 20 years m its formation . Mr . Tapling left the trustees a sum of , £ , 1000 tor the purpose of arranging the collection for exhibition and lor its maintenance .

The Rev . Dr . Forrest , the new Dean of Worcester , was on Wednesday atternoon , at the Town Hall , Kensington , presented by his late congregation at St . Jude ' s , boutn Kensington , with an address , a gold watch , and a cheque lor , ( , 2200 , as a token of affection and esteem . The presentation was made by the President of the Local

Government board , as vicar ' s churchwarden . Mr . Ritchie also presented to Mrs . Forrest a silver tea service , a diamond brooch , and clock , the gift of the ladies ot the congregation , and the Bishop of Marloorough , the Archdeacon ot London , and the Hon . and Rev . li .
