Masonic Notes .

In addition to the business which is transacted in the ordinary course at the Quarterly Communication of Grand Lodge on Wednesday next two propositions will be submitted which are certain to command the sympathy and support of the Craft generally .

* * * The first , which will be brought forward by Bro . Sir Albert W . Woods ( Garter ) , will be to the effect that , in consideration of the eminent services which the new Pro Grand Master , Bro . the Earl of Lathom , rendered

to the Craft during his 16 years' tenure of the office of Deputy Grand Master , a full-length portrait of his lordship be painted and p laced in the great hall at Freemasons' Hall . There is little doubt the motion will be received with the utmost favour by the members

present , as well as—as we have already remarkedby the Craft at large . There is no more popular Mason than Lord Lathom , none that has rendered more important service . It is no light burden which his lordship has borne for the last 18 years , that of

presiding over one of the strongest , wealthiest , and most influential of our Provinces . But though in his relations with the lodges and brethren under his charge he has exhibited firmness , he has at the same time shown great tact and judgment , and assuredly there is

no Province in which the feelings existing between the chief and his subordinates are on a kindlier or firmer footing . In Grand Lodge , and wherever else he has been called upon to preside , Lord Lathom has uniformly

exhibited the same qualities , and thus it is that Bro , Sir Albert Woods ' s proposal has our warmest commendation , as we are confident it has that of everyone who has the interests of our Society at heart .

* * * The other is a motion which Bro . Sir John B . Monckton , P . G . W ., has given notice , and will contain a proposal to grant the sum of 500 guineas to the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution on the occasion of its

Jubilee Festival next year . This , too , is a resolution which cannot fail to enlist general sympathy and support . The Benevolent Institution is the creation of Grand Lodge , and not only has the latter taken a deep

interest in the welfare of its offspring , but it has likewise a very conspicuous share in its government . Hence , in this instance , as in the case of Bro . Sit Albert Woods ' s motion , we have every reason to expect that it will be carried by acclamation .

On Thursday next , at the regular meeting of the Loyal Cambrian Lodge , No . no , Merthyr Tydvil , a life size portrait of himself , painted by Bro . G . F . Harris , will be presented to Bro . Lieut .-Col . Lewis , who for the last 20 years has rendered most valuable services to the

lodge . The picture will be handsomely mounted , and will bear the inscription : " Presented to Bro . David Rees Lewis , P . M ., P . P . G . R ., P . P . J . G . W ., together with an illuminated address , by the members of the Loyal Cambrian Lodge , No . 1 io , for faithful and liberal

services to his lodge and Masonry for a period of 20 years . October , 1891 . " We congratulate Bro . Lewis on this evidence of the esteem and respect in which he is held , and the lodge on the kindly feeling which has thus prompted it to recognise Bro . Lewis ' s work .

* * * Bro . Solomon Strasser , P . M ., whom many of our readers will remember as one of the body of pilgrims from the United States which visited these shores during the past summer , has just reached home again ,

and as is the custom with his brother Masons of America , he experienced the other day a most cordial and even elaborate welcome , his lodge—Mount Vernon , No . 3 jurisdiction of New York—speciall y inviting him to deliver an address descriptive of the many places

he had visited during his pilgrimage . A goodly company assembled on the occasion , and when the address , which was listened to with marked attention , was concluded , Bro . Strasser was presented with a handsome solid gold Past Master ' s jewel together with a mallet

and trowel of beautiful workmanship . The proceedings throughout were of a most pleasant character , and Bro . Strasser , whose geniality was so prominent a feature when here , is to be congratulated on the heartiness with which his return was greeted . They manage these things very nicely in the States .
