Reports Of Masonic Meetings.

evening was no doubt the rendering of the addresses by Bro . T . Fenn , P . B . G . P ., who is ever ready to perform any duties as well in French as in English . In the early part of the evening Bro . T . Fenn filled the Senior Warden's chair , while that of the Junior Warden was filled by Bro H . Bue , P . G . Std . Br ., to whom , as we all know , the Lodge La France owes its ritual . The ceremony was witnessed by a

great number of brethren , the very pretty temple of the Cafe Royal being quite crowded . Among the company we noticed as Grand Officers of Grand Lodge Bro . Sir John B . Monckton , P . G . W ., and Bro . Colonel Shadwell H . Clerke , G . Sec ; also half a dozen red collars from the Tuscan Lodge ( Bro . W . E . Sampson , G . S . of the year , Bros . Hopkinson , Regester , Gordon Smith , and Ebbetts , P . G . S . ) ,

the Tuscan Lodge having stood sponsor for the lodge at the time of sending in the petition . Bros . Keyser and Tomkins represented the Prov . Grand Officers , and Bros . Letord , Thorn , and Cubitt formed an English contingent from the Chapitre La France . There were also about 40 P . M . ' s and distinguished members of various lodges , among whom we must mention Bro .

J . MacDonald , of the Kilwinning Lodge , _ U . S . A . The W . M . having been duly installed , invested his officers as follows : Bros . B . A . Lacoste , l . P . M . ; E . J . N . Pouard , S . W . ; H . Testard , J . W . ; H . Bue , Treas . ; E . Monteuuis . Sec ; J . Oppenheim , S . D . ; E . Chatrian , J . D . ; P . Saillard , I . G . ; E . St . Clair , D . C . ; Beranger and Dreyfus , Stwds . ; Walter , Org . ; and G . F . Mitchel , Tyler .

Bro . St . Clair , P . M ., was also elected to represent the lodge at the Jubilee Festival of the Benevolent Institution , with a promise of a good subscription from the lodge to head his list , the funds being in a very healthy state , and showing a handsome balance at the bank . Work being ended , the brethren adjourned to refreshment , and this being under the management of Bro .

Delacoste , the duty of Steward became a sinecure , although we must not omit to mention that Bro . E _ . St . Clair , as D . C , was ubiquitous and most assiduous in his attentions . The speeches for the "Sautes d'Obligation " ( regulation toasts ) were short and to the point , and therefore pleased everybody . " La Reine et la Francmaconnerie , " " La France et Sou

Representant , M . le President Carnot , " "Le T . V . le Grand Maitre de l'Ordre , S . A . R . le Prince de Galles , " were proposed by the W . M ., and duly acknowledged . Bro . St . Clair was deputed to propose " The Healths du Pro Grand Maitre , du Dep . Gr . M ., des Autres Grands Officiers en exercice et des Ancien , Grands Officiers . " Bro . B . A . Lacoste , I . P . M ., gave "The W . M ., " and

wished him a successful year of office . Bro . E . Monteuuis , P . M ., proposed "The Visitors , " and gave them a hearty welcome . Bro . L . Clerc , P . M ., sang the praises of Bro . St . Clair , the Installing Master , and of Bro . T . Fenn , his Assistant . Then the Worshipful Master was again on his legs to decorate the l . P . M . and drink "The Health of the Past

Masters , " and so through the list . All were duly honoured and suitably responded to , the points of interest being evidently whether the Grand Officers and visitors would answer in French or in English , and if in French how they would acquit themselves . We must say they went through the ordeal thoroughly well , never venturing beyond their depth .

Bro . J . MacDonald , of the Kilwinning Lodge , United States of America , did not venture beyond "Venerable Maitre et mes freres" in French , but his speech was particularly felicitous , and he ended by remarking that as he regretted very much not to be able to greet fraternally the members of the French lodges generally , he was happy to be able to extend the hand of fellowship to the members

of the Lodge La France . Bros . Regester and Jackson treated the brethren to speeches wholly in French , and right well they did it ; but the great hit of the evening was made by Bro . Sir John B . Monckton , who in replying for "The Grand Officers , " addressed the brethren in French and wound up with these words : " Mes freres le jeu est fait , "

and sat down . This quite brought down the house . Is it necessary to say that under such pleasurable circumstances " Les Macons pauvres et Malheureux" were not forgotten , and that the " Tronc de la Veuve " received a considerable addition to its funds . Among the visitors present were Bros . C . E . Keyser , P . M . 404 ; A . E . Young , I . G . 14 ; George Raid , J . D .

The minutes of the regular and emergency meetings

were read and confirmed . Bro . J . P . Harding , P . M ., was then presented as Worshipful Master elect , and was impressively installed intn the chair by Bro . J . Corbett , l . P . M . The following officers were appointed and ivnested : Bros . VV . F . Lord , S . W . ; W . Thomas , P . M ., Z ., 'J . W . ; E . Y . Jolliffe , P . M ., P . Z ., & c , Treas . ; R . D . Letters of apology for non-attendance were announced from several Grand Officers and other brethren , and the lodge was formally closed . The brethren then partook of a choice banquet , which

was followed by the usual toast list . In proposing "The Grand Officers , " the W . M . said they always welcomed Grand Officers in that lodge , but they seemed to have a special regard for Grand Treasurers , as the father of the lodge was the first Grand Treasurer elected to that position . Bro . George Everett , Grand Treasurer , expressed his

pleasure at being present at this very rising and important lodge , and said his pleasure had been further enhanced by meeting many he had long looked upon as esteemed friends . It was rather appropriate that it should fall to his lot to respond to that toast in a lodge named after one of his distinguished predecessors—Bro . Derby Allcroft—who gained high repute during the time he occupied the position

for the manner in which he performed the duties . He was also pleased to see Bro . Eve , who gave great satisfaction during his year , and who had distinguished himself in other walks of Masonic life . That there should be three Grand Officers , and all Grand Treasurers , was a happy coincidence in a lodge named after a Past Grand Treasurer . It would not require a great stretch of imagination to

suppose that to be the Grand Treasurers' mess , and the other brethren the visitors . A great deal of the high standing the Craft had arrived at was mainly due to the manner in which the Past Grand Officers performed their duties . The Present Grand Officers desired that the brethren would be able to say that they had done their duties to the best of their abilities . He wished to mention the masterly manner in

which the I . P . M ., Bro . Corbett , performed the impressive ceremony of installation , and the Worshipful Master had shown he knew his business by the manner in which he took up his duties , which was an augury for the continued prosperity of the lodge . Bro . J . Derby Allcroft , P . G . Treas ., also replied . He had come up from the country to be present , and he felt

great pleasure in attending , for he could echo Bro . Everett ' s words as tothe conduct of the business by the l . P . M , and the beginning the new Worshipful Master had made . It was gratifying to him to see the success of the lodge and the increase of the members , and by the time they met next year they would no doubt number 60 members , which was very good in six years . It was one of his delights to feel

that that lodge , associated by their kind offices with his name , was proving a success , and so long as he was spared he wished to see it prosper , not only in numbers , but in quality . Bro . J . Corbett , I . P . M ., in proposing "The Health of the W . M ., " said they had heard from two eminent authorities of the able way in which the W . M . had shown his quality by the work he had done , but the members were in

somewhat a better position to judge of the merits of their W . M . They had seen from the early days of the lodge how very anxious he was to take any office , and they had seen him work his way up step by step to the chair . Bro . Harding had in every office performed his work in a masterly and able manner , and had distinguished himself by a singleness of purpose and readiness to do his duty .

They had in their VV . M . a forecast of a happy and prosperous year of office , and as there was work to be performed he was sure they would not be disappointed . Bro . J . P . Harding , W . M ., in reply , said he hoped that during his year the brethren would give him plenty of work and bring in good members , and he would then do his best to give them as much satisfaction as his humble abilities would

allow . It would be his earnest desire to emulate those who had gone before , and uphold the high position the lodge had gained . He felt he had a very difficult position to fill in following such very worthy brethren who had attained such wonderful success not only in that but in other lodges . He trusted that one and all would give him their support , and at the end of his year they would be able to say if he

had deserved the high honour they had paid him . "The l . P . M . and Installing Master" was next proposed by the W . M ., who remarked that no brother who had presided in that lodge had done so with more earnest interest for its welfare and true Masonic energy than the brother who had just vacated the chair . Bro . Corbett , I . P . M ., had performed his duties with singular ability , and had given

them a ritual which had surpassed all who had gone before . There was one pleasant duty he had to perform , and that was to present Bro . J . Corbett , I . P . M ., with a handsome jewel as a token of the important work that brother had done in the lodge . The members would all join in wishing the l . P . M . many years to wear it , and health and strength to attend their lodge and give them the benefit of his

assistance when required . Bro . J . Corbett , I . P . M ., in responding , said the brethren were aware that the performance of duty was always before him , and that was the only thing he aspired to . He was obliged to the W . M . for the way he proposed the toast , and had no doubt he spoke the sentiments of his heart , for

in every station of life , be it ever so humble , the fact of having done one ' s duty was a satisfactory one . Some people might say there was no great merit in that , but at the same time when they found duty neglected on every hand , to find a person impressed with a desire to do his duty was a subject for commendation . When they found this intention rewarded by the esteem of their fellow men

it was an additional charm to success . It was to him a very great charm , because he felt sure in the way they had received the toast and in the very handsome jewel voted him , that it was no empty compliment , but that they felt he had endeavoured to perform his duty while he occupied the chair . He felt deeply indebted to them for thi hearty reception given the toast and for the handsome jewel pre-

sented to him . He also felt that the lodge was now in such a position that it gave every prospect of maintaining the position it had held for years past . Bros . Hassell , Brander , Shurmur , and others acknowledged " The Visitors . " "The Masonic Charities" was next given by the W . M ., who said that Bro . R . D . Cummings , P . M ., Sec , was a Steward for the Jubilee Festival of the Royal Masonic

Benevolent Institution , and asked the brethren to send him up with a good list . Bro . R . Eve , P . G . Treas ., replied , after which "The Past Masters" and "The Officers '" were given , and a very successful meeting closed with the Tyler ' s toast . A selection of music was performed under the direction of Bros . J . F . Haskins and W . Bradford , assisted by Bros . Walter Coward , Albert James , and James Kilt .

Hampstead Lodge ( No . 2408 ) . —The first regular meeting of this lodge was held at the Hampstead Conservatoire , Eton-avenue , Hampstead , on Tuesday , the 17 th inst ., when Bro . Andrew Miller , M . D ., W . M ., opened the lodge , assisted by the following officers : Bros N . Hanhart , S . W . ; T . Sansome Preston , J . W . ; G . Low , P . M ., Treas . ; G . Haynes , Sec ; N . J . West , P . M .,

P . P . G . Treas . Cornwall , S . D . ; G . Titus Barham , P . M ., LG . ; C . W . P . Dyke , P . M ., P . P . S . G . D . Dorset , and H . Haynes , Stwds . ; and P . S . Gregory , Tyler . The visitors included Bros . A . H . Debenham , P . M ., P . P . G . Std . Br . Herts ; J . Ricks , P . M . 33 ; W . H . Fenton , 337 ; and W . A . Satchell . The minutes of the consecration meeting having been read ,

a ballot was taken for the following joining members , who were unanimously elected : Bros . John Hart , John Hughes , Samuel Pounceby , P . G . C . Shaw , H . C . C . Shaw , A . L . Secretan , and A . F . Thomson . A ballot was then taken for Messrs . E . Ault , P . Stafford Day , R . Cromwell Edwards , and F . H . Gervis , who were duly initiated in a most impressive manner by the W . M . The following brethren were elected honorary mer .-bers : Bros . Rev . C . J .

Martyn , P . G . Chap . ; T . Fenn , President Board of General Purposes ; Capt . N . G . Philips , P . G . D . ; Lieut .-Col . S . Burney , P . G . D . ; and F . Richardson , P . G . D . Other business being disposed of , including two propositions for joining , the lodge was closed , and the brethren sat down to dinner . Full honours were done to the usual Masonic toasts , and some excellent music and recitations closed a most enjoyable eveninc .

PROVINCIAL MEETINGS . BATTLE . Abbey Lodge ( No . 1184 ) . —A meeting of this lodge was held on Thursday , the 19 th inst ., at the Masonic Hall , when there were present Bros . J . B . Foster , VV . M . ; J . W . Pepper , S . W . ; T . W . Avis , J . W . ; Rev . R . W . Loosemore , M . A ., P . M ., P . P . G . C . Yorks , Chap . ; H . G .

Lamborn , P . M ., P . P . G . P . ; Till , Hodson , Noakes , Smith , and others . Visitor :

Bro . H . Amelat , 1563 . The lodge having been opened , the Chaplain and S . D ., who have been unavoidably absent on previous occasions , were invested with the collars of their respectives offices . Several lodge matters were discussed and a candidate proposed for initiation . Bro . Hughes gave notice that at the next meeting he would move a series of recommendations

as to the future procedure in submitting the particulars of a candidate to a select Committee before formal proposition in open lodge . These recommendations are based on those of the Quatuor Coronati Lodge , and , in view of the recent correspondence and remarks in our columns as to the influx of new members , appear to be desirable additions to the ordinary by-laws , especially those of large lodges .

CROYDON . Frederick Lodge of Unity ( No . 452 ) . — On Tuesday , the 17 th inst ., the installation meeting of the above lodge was held at the Masonic Hall , High-street , the W . M ., Bro . David W . Sugg , presiding , when an unusually profitable evening was spent . The lodge was opened in

the Three Degrees by the W . M ., who in a very able and impressive manner raised Bro . L . T . Chabot to the Third Degree . Bro . Aubrey M . Ohren , son of the respected Treasurer , Bro . Magnus Ohren , P . A . G . D . C , was then installed in the chair of K . S . by Bro . Harold Levett ,

ably assisted by Bro . Scott . The lodge was then closed , and the remainder of the evening passed in a very enjoyable manner in the cosy little banqueting hall adjoining the lodge , where cheerful music and hearty good-fellowship brought a well spent evening to a happy close .

KINGSTON-ON-THAMES . Dobie Lodge ( No . 889 ) . —On the 18 th inst , at the Griffin Hotel , Bro . F . J . Hayward , in the presence of a good assembly of the brethren , raised Bros . Bedser and Gaze to the Sublime Degree , and the working throughout of each officer concerned was most creditable indeed .

I he election of W . M . for next year fell with an unanimous vote upon Bro . A . M . Levy , S . W . Bro . John Drewett was re-elected Treasurer , and Bro . Gilbert as Tyler . A Past Master ' s jewel was voted to the out-going Master on the motion of Bro . Long , the senior P . M ., who highly

commended the way in which Bro . Hayward , an initiate in the lodge , had worked in every office upward . Bro . Long also kindly undertook to represent the Dobie Lodge at the forthcoming Jubilee Festival of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution , and a vote of ten guineas was made from the lodge funds . The evening closed in the usual way .

LEEDS . Zetland Lodge ( No . 1311 ) . —The installation meeting of this popular and prosperous lodge took place on the 20 th inst ., at the Masonic Hall , Great George-street . There was a large and brilliant gathering of members of Prov . G . Lodge , Leeds brethren , and members from distant lodges . Amongst those present when the W . M ., Bro . William Whiteley Clayton , took the chair , were the Acting

Bro .
