by metropolitan and provincial artists , in recognition of his earnest efforts in the encouragement of art in Liverpool . " 'I'he interesting ceremony was attended by a large number of ladies and gentlemen , the chairman of tlie library and museum committee , Mr . j . A . Piclon , occupying the chair .

Thc Chairman gave an interesting sketch of the history of art exhibitions in Liverpool , the lirst of which was held about 100 years ago and in the course of his remarks he said it was principally owing to the cfkv ; l ^ of Mr . Edward Samuelson and Mr . P . J I . . Ralhbone that thev

were al length revived after many years cessation . The first of the new exhibitions was held last year , and on the whole proved a great success , inasmuch as tlie value of the pictures sold was , { , ' 6 . 300 , and the exhibition so far paid its way tbat ali expenses were defrayed and a

surplus of about , £ , " 600 remained , which had been appropriated b y the corporation to the purchase of pictures for the benefit of the town . Last year . , £ , 500 worth oi " pictures was purchased for that purpose , and this year £ 600 had been expended in the same manner . 'Phis

years exhibition had also met with very satisfactory success . ( Applause . ) The value ofthe pictures sold was about , { " 6 . 000 . which was within , { , ' 330 of the amount last year , when one picture obtained ^ 1 , 350 .

Alter some reference to the patronage bestowed by the public on that season ' s exhibition , the Chairman said that the number of pictures sold both this year and last was larger than in any other provincial to . rn . It was also gratifying to know that there were being

gradually accumulated m that building pictures and oilier irorks of art such as would eventuall y form for the town a very creditable collection . Ilencat alluded to the fact that Mr . P .

P . IL Ralhbone had recentl y presented to lhe town a pieiure which cost , { " . ; . oo —(' a ; 'p ! aii * , e )—and announced lhat at the next ineeiiiif ofthe
