" District Grand Lodge for the North Island of New Zealand , Wellington , "Oct . 24 , 1901 . " Dear Sir and Wor . Brother , "At the Quarterly Communication of the District Grand Lodge , held on the ioth instant , the Board of General Purposes presented a report , from which the following is an extract :
"The Board has received information that the Cambrian Lodgeof Australia , No . 656 ( E . C . ) , Sydney , has been successful in the lawsuit against the Grand Lodgeof New South Wales , which was the outcome of circumstances arising some 15 years ago , at the time of the fortration of the Grand Lodge into the body that received the recognition of the mother Grand Lodge . This , it is to be hoped , will put an end to the trouble with which the Cambrian Lodge has been so long beset , and will enable it now to enter upon a lime of deserved peace and prosperity . The history of the lodge during all
these years is without parallel in the records of Freemasonry . The Board calls the attention of lodges to the tenacity of purpose and self-sacrifice of our brethren of the Cambrian Lodge , which has now resulted in its firm establishment as an English lodge , and suggests that District Grand Lodge would do well to send a message of congratulation to thebrethren of the Cambrian Lodge . " The report was ordered to be received and entered on the minutes , and the District Grand Lodge unanimously directed that the recommendation of th ? Board of General Purposes be given effect to .
"I am accordingly instructed by the R . W . District Grand Master to address this letter to you , conveying the feelings of the District Grand Lotlge of Wellington toward the Cambrian Lodge , and those self-sacrificing brethren who have for so many years fought for existence , and to express the hope that the Cambrian Lodge will have a long and beneficent career under the banner for which it has struggled so long . WE ACCEPTED the invila'ion of Messrs . Tussaudsto see the Christmas novelties of the season . Iliey consist of four groups—two for the delectation of children , and Iwo for " childien of a larger growth . " For the little ones thefe are prjvidid "Cinderella" and "The Babes in the Wood . " Here the fairy stories , so well known and loved by them , are realised in a charming manner , ihe scenic effects are well managed , the details are in good keeping , and heighten the illusion . In "The Babes in the Wood " the scene is woodland : the twitterings of the birds which are busily
engaged in their pious duty of covering the hapless children with leaves adds greatly to the realistic effect . We are sure the children who visit Madame Tussauds will be delighted to thus practically renew their acquaintance with fairy lore . The novelty offered to adults is of a more seiious nature . A reminiscence of the " Good Old Times" ( Query ) is effered— " The Stocks" and "The Pillory . " Our ancestors were in the habTt of tirplcying these instruments of punishment as deterrents against those , who by lheir evil piactises , brought themselves within the pale of the law ; but history le who differed in
informs us that it was often the practice to submit innocent peop political opinions from those in power to these indignities . In both tableaux the scene is laid in Bristol and neighbourhood . In "The Stocks" we have two tyjes of character—one who feels his degradation , the other who is indifferent to it . The city of Bristol itself is chosen for " The Pillory . " The tower of the Temple Church is shown , also the noble spire of St . Mary Redcliffe . Equally , the Pillory , like the Stocks , is a careful copy from authentic sources . The actions of the bystxndersgive us some id a of the spirit of those old times .
