Masonic Conversazione.

MASONIC CONVERSAZIONE .

One of the most successful entertainments of the season under Masonic auspices was held in the Freemasons ' Hall , Edinburgh , on the 19 th inst ., when the Lodge of Edinburgh ( Mary ' s Chapel ) , No . I , gave a conversazione in aid of the extended scheme of Scottish Masonic Benevolence for thebenefit of indigent Scottish members

of the Order , their widows , and children . For the occasion the hall vvas very tastefully decorated with fairy lamps and palms , and vvas cosily and attractively arranged in drawing-room fashion . The company numbered considerably over two hundred , and it is expected that the result will be a

substantial contribution to the scheme , in connection with which , as was stated iu the course of the evening , it is proposed to raise a sum of ^ 10 , 000 . It was particularly appropriate that in such an important movement a foremost part should be taken by the lodge which claims seniority over all its brethren throughout

the world , and it was exceedingly gratifying that the promoters of the entertainment were able to secure the services of so many accomplished musicians . On arriving the company were received by Bro . Gilbert Macdonald , R . W . M ., assisted by Bros . Councillor Crichton , P . M .: William Officer , S . S . C , P . M . ; Abbot ,

P . M . ; Muirhead , P . M . ; Dr . Dickson , Depute Master ; Kirkwood , Substitute Master ; Bros . Bell and P . L . Henderson , Wardens ; and J . L . Trevelyan Sturrock , Secretary . The entertainment provided consisted of vocal and instrumental selections and recitations by well-known

artistes . Mr . Dambmann and Mr . Daly contributed largely to the enjoyment of the audience by several solos on the violin ; Mr . Carl D . Hamilton , though , being last on the programme , did not appear till a very late hour , was warmly encored for his performance on the ' cello ; and Mr . J . L . Rippin was very favourably

received for his operatic selections on the cornet . For her tasteful and sympathetic rendering of Scottish songs Miss Belle Macgregor vvas deservedly applauded , and Messrs . W . A . Peterkin and C . S . Howard also gave their assistance as vocalists . Miss Rhoda Blackwood—a pupil of Mr . Cassius Wade , also one of the performers—made her first appearance as a dramatic

reciter , and created a very favourable impression . Though unquestionably lacking experience , the young debutante gave every promise of making her mark as a platform reciter . A toy symphony , arranged by F . Laubach upon a number of popular Scottish airs , proved one of the most entertaining items on the programme . Messrs . Bridgman , Kenyon Lees , and Laubach officiated as accompanists .
