Letters excusing attendance were read from several companions , and a very pleasant meeting was terminated at an early hour . Incidentally it vvas mentioned that two of the officers would be honoured with provincial rank at the next meeting of Prov . Grand Chapter .

PLUMSTEAD . —Excelsior Lodge ( No . 226 ) . — The installation meeting of the above flourishing lodge vvas held at the Masonic Buildings on Friday , the 21 st instant , and vvas well attended . The lodge was opened by Bro . VV . Moulds , P . P . G . I . G ., W . M ., and the minutes of the preceding meeting were read and conlirmed . The ballot was then taken tor Bros . R . Fowler and Wm . Paller as

joining members , and proved unanimous . The ballot vvas then taken for Bro . Wm . J . Crovvdy , 13 , as a candidate for advancement , and that also proved unanimous ; but as the brother vvas not in attendance , the ceremony of installation was at once proceeded with . Bro . C . F . Officers , Present and Past , " with the name of Bro . Coupland , who , in reply , said he thanked them for the great honour done him by coupling his name with so important a toast . Lord Egerton of Tatton , their esteemed Pro Grand Master , vvas a most genial nobleman , and they would say so if ihey saw him conducting the business of Grand Mark Lodge in the absence of their G . M . M ., the

Prince of Wales . Lord Hertford vvas also a grand worker , and was not only the owner of vast possessions , but stood high in his position as a peer of the realm , and it was a most remarkable thing in Mark Masonry that it should attract such distinguished gentlemen and Masons to interest themselves and labour so arduously as they did for its prosperity . Now he vvas not only an Officer of Grand Lodge ,

but a Past Warden of the Province of Kent , and the fact that he was still further a Past Master of the Excelsior Lodge made him feel proud indeed of his connection with the Mark Degree , wilh the prosperity of vvhich he trusted he should long be associated , and especially so with his brethren of the Excelsior Lodge . The next toast vvas that of " Bro . the Rev . Thomas

Robinson , M . A ., P . G . M . of the Province of Kent , " and the VV . M . in giving it said in Bro . Robinson they had one whose Masonic knowledge and love of work made it a pleasure and an honour to serve under him , and he , the VV . M ., never was more delighted in his life than when upon a recent occasion at Grand Lodge he saw Bro .

Robinson at his post as G . M ., conducting the business in a manner in which ability was only equalled by a geniality that both impressed and delighted him and all present . He asked them to drink the toast in bumpers . Bro . Palmer responded for " Bro . the Rev . Hayman Cummings , M . A ., D . P . G ; M ,, and the rest of the P . P . G . Mark Officers , Present and Past . " He said it was a great

honour to hold the position of S . W . in such a Province a that of Kent , and under such a Grand and D . G . Master s ^ Bros . Robinson and Cummings , but he did not take it individually as an honour conferred upon him , but on th lodge of vvhich he was so proud to be a Past Master , u came to him without asking for it , and he vvas not so miY a simpleton as to say * ' no . " He vvas the second P . M . 0 f that lod vvhich the honour of Senior

ge upon Wardenshin of the province had been placed , and in looking through the " Blue Book" he found that there were onl y three other lodges in the province that had been so honoured He vvas exceedingly pleased to see their esteemed P . Q Master at Maidstone at the last Provincial meeting , and " trusted that both he and Bro . Cummings might long be spared to rule over them .

The W . M ., in response to a eulogistic speech by the l . P . M ., in which he proposed "The Health of Bro . Ovenden , " said he felt deeply the kind and indeed enthu ! siastic manner in which the toast of his health , so ably put by the I . P . M ., had been received by them . He trusted that he should during his year of office carry out the work to their satisfaction . It vvas not an easy task . He did not

mean by that that the work vvas especially hard , but it vvas not easy to follow in the footsteps of his predecessor ; but whether easy or hard , he should so endeavour to follow * that at the end of his year they would feel and say that he had not worked in vain , but for the credit and prosperity of the Excelsior Lodge . Bro . Moulds having briefly responded for "The Past Masters , "

Ihe W . M . proposed the toast of "The Installing Officers , " coupled with the name of Bro . Penfold . He said he vvas exceedingly sorry that Bro . Matier had been compelled to leave them—that brother , having three important engagements in town , was obliged to go ; but they were proud to say that one of their own P . M . ' s—Bro . Penfold —had made a splendid substitute . He had taken up the

work not at the eleventh hour , but atthe fifty-ninth minute of the twelfth hour , and given the addresses eloquentl y . He asked them to drink the toast enthusiastically . Bro . Penfold said he certainly had taken up the work at the eleventh hour , and had had lo follow one who vvas , to say the least of it , a Past Master at the art of installing- , Bro . Matier having performed the ceremony some 36 5

times—that vvas once a day for the whole year—not a had record for an Installing Officer , at any rate . He ( Bro . Penfold' vvas more of an amateur , and would have done better for a few days' notice . Under the circumstances he did the best he could , as it vvas necessary to give the lectures , otherwise the lay brethren would see nothing at all of the ceremony . It was at all times interesting to take

stock of a lodge , and these annual installation meetings generally gave them an opportunity of seeing who were members of it . It was mott gratifying to find that there were no less ihan five P . M . 's present . He was proud of the lodge , for , as the VV . M . had said , it vvas the first in the province , both for its numbers and its support of the Charities , and if they stood together they would still keep it so

for many years lo come . He cordially thanked them for the toast , and resumed his seat amid cheers . Bro . Koberls having eloquently responded for "The Visitors , " Bro . Spinks earnestly advocated the cause of the Mark Benevoler . t Fund , and urged the brethren to subscribe a goodly sum for it , even if they did not send up a Steward .

Ihey were well up for funds , and had received great benefits from the educational grant , and he thought it only ri ^ ht that the Mark Benevolent Fund should hi supported . Bro . Kenneday supported Bro . Spinks in his appeal , and the VV . M . then announced that he would stand Steward for the lodge at the forthcoming Festival , if the

brethren would support him . Bro . Penfold said he vvuuld start vvith a guinea , two of the brethren gave five guineas , and , a list having been sent round , the W . M . announced the gratifying total of a little over 33 guineas subscribei that night , and it was further agreed that all sums of a guinea and under should go to the benefit of the lodge votes . The lodge is already a V . P . of the fund , and in a

fair way to become a President . The other toasts were "The Masonic Pres =, " responded to by Bro . Jolly ; "The Oflicers , " by Bros . Kenneday and Whiteheart ; " Bro . Syer , for services rendered the lodge in catering ; " and then the Tyler ' s toast concluded the proceedings , which were most harmonious , the singing and reciting being really good .

TORQUAY . —Jordan Lodge ( No . 319 ) . —The installation meeting of this lod *; e vvas held in the Masonic Hall , Park-street , on VVednesday , the 19 th instant , when there were present , with others , Bros . Hughan , and the minutes of the previous meeting read and confirmed , the W . M . in the chair then made a few feeling remarks upon the great loss the Order had sustained in consequence of

the death of the Rev . Canon Portal , M . A ., Past G . M ., speaking in warm terms of his brotherly love , and of the deep interest he took in all things Masonic . Bro . John Lane supplemented these remarks , and moved that a letter of condolence be sent from the lodge , through the Grand Secretary , to the widow of their late respected brother , expressing the sympathy of the brethren vvith her in the

hour of trial . Bro . W . Taylor seconded the motion , and the Secretary vvas requested to carry out the same . The audited balance-sheet for the past 12 months was passed . The financial position of the lodge is in a very satisfactory condition ;; having voted a good proportion of the income for charitable purposes , a balance of some pounds remain in hand . The chair was now taken by Bro . Lane as Installing Master , and the Worshipful Master elect
