Eastes , Prov . G . H ., and the rest of the Prov . Grand Officers , Present and Past , " was coupled with the name of Comp . Coupland . Comp . Coupland said he felt great pleasure in responding for their Prov . G . H . and the rest of the Prov . Grand Officers . Unfortunately , that year they had in that province been under ajdepression , on account of the great
bereavement sustained by Comp . Eastes , but he trusted they would soon have their distinguished companion amongst them again . That year the annual meeting of Provincial Grand Chapter was held at Sevenoaks , where they were entertained by Comp . Curtis , the rector of Sevenoaks , who lent them his fine schoolroom to hold the chapter , and did all in his power to make the meeting a pleasant one , and ,
seeing they were supported by such excellent companions as Comp . Curtis , and Comps . Jamblin and Cummings ( of their own chapter ) , and others , he felt that they were surely and safely progressing in the Province of Kent . In their name and for himself , personally , he thanked the companions for the cordial reception of the toast . Comp . Penfold then proposed the toast of "The M . E . Z ., "
and said they looked to their Z . as the leader and ruler of the chapter . At the very pleasant meeting they had at the Cafu Royal , when Comp . Hobson was installed , he promised them that he would endeavour , in fact , he said it was his intention to make their social board a comfortable one . He had that night fully carried out his promise , while his work in the chapter was an indication of what they had to expect
for the future . While he carried out the duties of the chair , both at work and refreshment so admirably as he had that evening , he ( Comp . Penfold ) felt sure they would all have a most prosperous and enjoyable year under the rule of their excellent Comp . Hobson . Comp . Hobson , in reply , said Comp . Penfold had fully portrayed his feelings and desire that the meetings of the
chapter should be made both comfortable and enjoyable . They only met four times a year , and he fully intended to carry out Ihe idea of comfort , and with the cordial cooperation of the Past Principal ' s he had no doubt of a successful issue . Comp . Mason responded for "The P . Z . 's , " and said he felt it a great honour to be a P . Z . of a chapter like the
Pattison , that stood so high in the Province of Kent , which was not only at the top of the tree for numbers , but , as they had been told by excellent . authority , for its working . There was no fear of iheir being called upon to do any coaching for the M . E . Z . or Comps . H . and J ., for every one present must have seen that they were nearly perfect , considciing that was their first attempt . He thanked them
for the toast , and should feel it his bounden duty to assist the welfare of the chapter by every means in his power . In giving the toast of " The 1 st and 2 nd Principals , " the M . E . Z referred to them as Comps . Cook and Roberts , and ventured to say that so far as their working was concerned ,
they could give "fifty up " to a good many competitions . Comp . Jolly remarked that they were " Hobson ' s choice " at any rate , and the toast was drunk right merrily . Comps . Cook and Roberts having returned thanks , Comps . Warren and De Grey responded for "The Visitors , " and the Janitor ' s toast concluded the proceedings .

WOOLWICH . —Excelsior Lodge ( No . 226 ) . — The regular quarterly meeting ( after the installation ) of the above lodge took place on Friday , the 21 st inst ., at the MasonicHall , William-street , Bro . E . Palmer , W . M ., and P . P . G . D . Kent , in the chair , supported by the following officers and brethren : Bros . C . Coupland , P . M ., and P . P . S . G . W . ; A . Penfold , P . M ., P . P . G . M . O . ; Capt . G .
Spinks , P . M ., P . P . A . G . D . C ; W . Moules , P . P . G . I . G ., S . W . ; T . Ovenden , P . J . G . D ., J . W . ; G . Kenneday , P . P . G . R . Sec , ; J . Whiteheart , P . P . G . I . Reed , H . Vallom , H . Town , and C Clapham .
T he lodge having been duly opened , and the minutes of the last meeting confirmed , the ballot was taken for Bros . E . Bryceson , M . A ., M . D ., 913 ; H . S . Syer , P . M . 13 ; G . Porter , 7 S 0 ; and Quartermaster R . McCoy , 1424 , and proved unanimous . By a curious coincidence neither of the advancees were present , and after Bro . Penfold had given an account of his Stewardship at the late Mark Benevolent
Festival , he being the third highest on the list , the lodge was closed , and the brethren adjourned to the Chatham for refreshments . The usual loyal and Mark Masonic toasts having been duly honoured , The W . M . gave lhat of " Our rulers in the Province of Kent , " and in so doing said he attended the annual
meeting of Provincial Grand Mark Lodge at Ramsgate , on the previous Wednesday . It was presided over by their excellent D . P . G . M ., Bro . Cummings , in the unavoidable absence , through severe illness , of Bro . Robinson , their esteemed Prov . G . Master . That fact threw a gloom ovei the proceedings , nevertheless , he and all present enjoyed themselves very well indeed under the circumstances . He
was sorry to tell them that Bro . Cummings informed him that their G . M . was seriously ill , both mentally and physically , and although he had , at the instance of Bro . Cummings , allowed himself to be nominated their P . G . M . for another term of three years , there was very little probability of his ever actually presiding over their meetings again . He , Bro . Palmer , however , trusted soon to hear a better
account of their beloved P . G . Master , who was undoubtedly much beloved and venerated by every Mason in Kent , especially Mark Masons . As to Bro . Cummings , he was so well known and esteemed amongst them that he need nat say one word in his behalf , except to wish him every happiness and prosperity . Their Bro . Ovenden had been honoured with the collar of P . J . G . D ., and Bro . West with
that of Steward , the latter would , no doubt , next year be followed by something more substantial . He asked them to drink the toast heartily , and coupled it with the names of Bros . Ovenden and West . Bro . Ovenden , in response , said the meeting at Ramsgate
was as the VV . M . had said , a very delightful one , with but one drawback , the serious illness of their Prov . G . Master , which every one deeply regretted . He thanked them for their hearty reception of the toast , and feel it a great honour to hold office under the rulers of the Province of Kent .
Bro . West also briefly returned thanks . Bro . Penfold then proposed the toast of " The W . M ., " and said they all felt for him in the peculiar position he had been placed in that night . He had , however , good prospects before him , and no doubt at their next meeting there would be plenty of material for him to work on . They all knew what an excellent painstaking worker Bro . Palmer
was in the Craft , while his hearty and genial manner at the social board made it a pleasure to be with him . In him the lodge had a good Master , and under him it would maintain its present high record forgood working and hospitality . Bro . Palmer said he hardly knew at present whether he was entitled to the eulogy so kindly given him by Bro . Penfuld , at any rate he should endeavour to deserve it . It
certainly was provoking that not one of the four candidates had turned up , as he was fully prepared to carry out the ritual , he trusted to their satisfaction . However , next time they met he trusted at least three out cf the four would be present , and that he might be as well supported by the Past Masters , officers , and brethren , as he was upon that occasion . He thanked them cordially for the toast . In response to the toast of " The Past Masters , " Bro .
Penfold regretted that a serious attack of bronchitis had prevented Bro . Hayes , P . M ., attending . He had come up from St . Leonard ' s on purpose to attend , but had been compelled to go back to his country house at once , He also spoke highly of Bros . Coupland , Weston , and Spinks , as Past Masters and supporters of the lodge , and in their names thanked the brethren most heaitily , Several other toasts followed , and some good harmony enlivened the proceedings .
